15. You Are My Sunshine

I got Lily in the tub and told her to wash her body while I looked in  the cabinets for towels. I gave up and knelt on the hard tiles. As I rubbed shampoo in her hair, she hummed the song 'You Are My Sunshine.' I hummed along with her and dunked her head back to get the soap out. My mom used to sing that song to the both of us. "Amber?" She said with her trembling voice.

"Yes baby?"

"Where did Mommy go?" I held my breath and closed my eyes for a couple of seconds. Then, all of a sudden there was a knock on the door behind me. I stood up quickly, avoiding Lily's question. I went over to the door and opened it a bit. It was Zayn.

"Towels. And a big shirt for her. I grabbed a pair of my sweats for you and a T-shirt."

"That's perfect. Thank you."

"You okay?" he asked.

"I can't do this. I can't explain to her what happened to our mother. I don't even understand why she's suddenly interested. I can't do it." I blubbered.

"She's got to find out some time, love."

"What do I do?"

"Just... Calm down. Maybe when you finish we can take some time to talk about it together. I'll help you out."

"What if she asks me about it again?"

"Find a way to work around it. You can handle it." He kissed my nose and handed me the towels, along with the clothes. Then he walked away, leaving me there, breathless. I closed the door and set the stuff on the counter. I got back down on my knees to finish bathing Lily. She didn't say anything about Mom again, she just kept humming the song. Over and over again, almost as if it were haunting me. I dried her off and slipped her into one of the big shirts. I'm assuming it was Niall's because it said IRELAND across the front. I told her to stay still and went to the living room to grab her pink backpack. Turns out I left it in Leo's truck, and I always packed a pair of underwear in there for Lily in case she had an accident. I'm a very cautious person- better safe than sorry.

I returned to her and got her fully dressed, then told her to join the boys in the living room. I quickly took my own shower and dried off quickly. Zayn's clothes were huge on me, but warm. I brushed my hair with a comb that I found in one of the drawers and shook my head around to give it a wet and wild look.

I was afraid to join them, because I didn't want to face one of the hardest things I'd ever have to do. But I'm glad I had Zayn by my side.
