24. Mommy & Me

We sat on the couch and stared at the floor for a while. After several moments of fake coughs and long sighs, she broke the silence. "So... Amber."

"So... Mom," I said. "You came back?" I tried to act sweet and innocent, like the daughter she left behind.

"I did. Because you girls mean a lot to me."

"Then why did you leave us..." I mumbled.

"That was the hardest thing I've ever had to do. I basically had no other choice."

"How could you say that? We could've gone through it together. And did you really think that I'd be okay raising a child on my own? At sixteen? Really, Mom?"

"Well, it looks like you're doing just fine." she gestured to Lily, who was on my lap and snuggled in my hair. "My own baby doesn't recognize me." she pursed her lips and swallowed.  Lily stared at her with her big glistening eyes.  "I'm sorry, sweetheart." she put a hand on my shoulder. "I want things to be like they used to."

"What like when Dad was still alive? He's not coming back. I didn't even have time to mourn about it because I had to be the strong one! For her." Tears rushed down my face as I sniffled back the pain. "It's never going to be the same. Especially now since I see you as a completely different person." I stood up and placed Lily on her feet. Then I went to my room and found a huge purse that I'd gotten years ago. I started stuffing it with outfits and some of my belongings. I put a couple of Lily's outfits in there too and our necessities. I came back out with the back on my shoulder and took her hand. "I think we should go. You stay here, don't find us. Don't call me, don't look for me just don't-" I held back a sob and made a fist.

I tugged on Lily's hand, but she didn't move. She kept staring at Mom. She let go of my hand and jumped into her arms, causing all of us the start crying. "Lily let's go." I said, inching closer to the door. She looked at me and shook her little head, stabbing me in the gut. "LILY. I SAID LETS GO." I stomped my foot but she didn't even flinch. I flung the door open and left.
