23. Her Return

Zayn brought us to our place the next day to gather a bunch of our stuff. I didn't know if Lily was upset or excited about leaving. Maybe she was, and I was the one who was afraid. I had dressed back into the clothes I'd been wearing the night of the concert, and the $400 was in my back pocket. My hair was down and out of my face, and I didn't have any makeup on, so my face was clear.

When we entered, I searched around for any signs of danger. I heard something coming from my bedroom, a woman talking. By the sound of her laugh, I immediately knew who it was. Lily hid behind me and Zayn whispered, "Is that..." i nodded without taking my eyes off of her. From where i was standing, I could see her profile. The way her tight blue dress showed her curves frightened me, making me remember how she'd lounge around the house in sweats all the time. Her makeup looked awful, like it had been sitting on her wrinkled face for days. She turned her head and saw us. She had been on the phone, and she was suddenly speechless.

"Honey, I have to go. My daughters just got home." She clapped her phone shut and came toward us. Zayn held me up with his strong hand at the small of my back. "Hi sweeties." She hugged me, and I felt Lily tugging on my shirt. I didn't exactly hug my mother back, just kinda stood there awkwardly while she squeezed my guts out. She pulled away and crouched down to Lily. As she leaned in for a hug, Lily moved back and climbed onto Zayn. He picked her up and looked at me. "Well..." she sighed, embarrassed that her own daughter wouldn't hug her. I crossed my arms and cleared my throat as she stood up straight again.

"What are you doing here?" I asked, looking at her up and down.

"Well, it is my house."

"Yeah, the house that you haven't slept in in almost two years." I barked.

"Please, Amber." She said between her teeth. "I'm sure you wouldn't want to make a scene in front of your friend." She pointed to Zayn, who was having a very private conversation with Lily. They whispered things back and forth into each other's ears as if we weren't even there.

"He doesn't care." I assured her. "Zayn this is my mother." he looked at her and smiled. When she winked at him, I almost gagged. "Oh please, mother." She shrugged.

"Goodness Amber! Sit down, relax. Have a drink." She went to the fridge and pulled out a bottle of liquor. "Seems to me like you haven't been here in a couple of days. Probably frolicking around with this hunk. Are you using protection? Are you having sex around your baby sister?" She gasped dramatically and Zayn was immediately uncomfortable.

"Mom!" I shouted, glaring at her with flames in my eyes.

"What? I didn't say anything bad. He's cute." She winked at him again and I rolled my eyes.

"Maybe we should go." I looked down at my boots.

"Actually, I came back because I really need to talk to you. I miss you girls." I nodded sarcastically with a sour face. "I'm serious."

"If you're so serious then why did you leave in the first place?!?" I tried to keep my voice low, but it didn't seem to work.

"Can we talk about this in private?" She asked, looking at Zayn, then back at me. I walked over to him and he looked at me worriedly.

"I'll be okay." I told him, before he could say anything. I kissed him. "I promise."

"Babe are you sure?" he asked, whispering with his low husky voice. "You want me to take her with me?" He pressed his cheek to Lily's forehead. I shook my head and pulled her into my arms.

"I'll call you if anything happens, okay?" I kissed him again and rubbed the stubble on his chin with my thumb. Then I couldn't help but kiss him again, so I did. Then Lily kissed his cheek and he told her he'd be back later. I watched him walk out and adjusted Lily on my hip. I was afraid to turn around and face the talk that I'd been dreading for a long time.
