My Mistake

Ireland Rowlins is a pathological robber. She hits a music store, and is almost caught in the process. By the store owners son. She is drawn to him, and leaves the store empty handed. Since her mistake, she's been going back and forth, between deciding to turn herself in and ending her reign, and hiding the past she is willing to put behind her.

No sooner had I walked down the escalator, I recieved a text from an unknown number.

Hey! It's Rory! From Strings and Things? The Music Store? I giggled to myself. He was just too easy to play. I thought for a second, trying to think of something to string him along.

Really? I wrote. You must be mistaken. The Rory I met would be calling, not texting. My instructions specifically said to call. I hit send, satisfied with myself. My phone almost immediately rang. I laughed; boys are too easy.

"Hello?" I asked, mock-innocent.

"Hey," the husky voice on the end of the line replied, amused.

"I'm sorry? Who is this?" I said, twirling a lock of hair around my finger.

"It's Rory," he said. "The guy you're going to take lessons from?"

"Doesn't ring a bell..." I said, pretending to be deep in thought.

"From Strings and Things? God, I knew she was too good to be true. I'm sorry miss, this might be the wrong number."

"No," I laughed. "It's the right number. I just wanted to hear you freak out."

"Oh." I could hear the sigh of relief and the smile in his voice. I  laughd again.

"I was just teasing! As if I wouldn't remember you or give you the wrong number!" I said. "You are not the kind of person to do that to," I joked. He laughed too.

"Do you want to have lunch or something?" I was silent, waiting for him too sputter out something to explain this invitation. "I mean, cuz I'm going to work with you, and we need to figure out sort of a schedule type deal," he babbled. I grinned to myself; there it was.

"Umm..." I said, as if I wasn't sure of what my answer would be. I was of course going to say yes.

"Please? Like around 1:30-ish? That's my next break?" I stifled a laugh.

"Let me get back to you on that," I said. "I need to check my schedule and with my mother."

"Ok," Rory sounded very deflated. "Promise to contact me?"

"We'll see," I said, ending the call before he could say anything else. I had ten minutes to worry him, and I had to call five minutes after those ten. I wandered around the mall for about twenty minutes before calling Rory back. He answered in the middle of the first ring.

"Hello?" I heard a frantic voice answer.

"Gee, did you miss me that much?" I joked.

"Sorry, I didn't know if you'd call back." It was as if I could here the blush in his voice.

"Of course I would!" I assured him.

"So are we on?"

"On for what?" I had to grace myself with at least one more near panic attack.

"For lunch?" I was silent again. Cue the sputtering of 'It's okay if you don't want to' and whatnot. "It's alright if you don't want to; you don't have to do this. It's totally fine if you don't"

"I want to." I said. Cue the implying a 'but.'

"But?" I grinned.

"AND I will," I said correcting him.

"Cool! So, how about we meet at Strings and Things in an hour?" I could hear the excitement in his voice.

"That sounds amazing."

"Wait, I never got your name." I bit my lip. Bad move on his part. Any other boy would get stood up with that line.

"Yes, you did," I said, calmly. Then I ended the call before he could answer.
