8. Chapter 8

I was all geared up and back in the training hall in an hour. The gear was really heavy so Agent 12 said I had to train in it and get used to it. All my gear insisted of a bulletproof vest (to add to that safe feeling I had inside), a holster on my left hip - loaded (again adds to the safe feeling), and some more bulletproof padding (you could taste the safety).

"First you'll run on the treadmill a while-and don't think about getting off. If you get off before the time is up it gets faster," Agent 12 explained. He helped me set up the treadmill and I was off. I started at a fairly light pace, but all the gear made it hard. Agent 12 had left the room to take care of some business and a half hour later, I was still running. I knew if I tried to get off or stop the treadmill would just speed up, so I kept running. Another half hour later, I was still running. I felt like I was gonna pass out.

"Agent 12!" I screamed, "This is getting pretty tiring!" I screamed for him over and over until my voice was hoarse. I thought of a possible way to get off this thing without making it speed up. I stepped on the side of the treadmill. It didn't seem to be speeding up. I did the same with my other foot and stepped of the treadmill altogether. I sat on the ground to catch my breath. Then Agent 12 walked through the door.

"Where were you?" I yelled in anger-or at least I tried to.

"That was a test, Agent 527."

  "A test? How'd I do? A-?"

"You can say that. It was to see if you were good agent material. You hung in there, but when you had a bad feeling in your gut you were careful. You tried to get out of the situation you were in and succeeded."

  "Okay, cool. Now what?"

  "You're ready."
