4. Chapter Four

I wake up and look around. He's gone. I sigh in relief and sit up. i swing my legs to the ground and stand up. i walk to my mirror and take off my blouse. i look at my neck, tracing the slanted line by the lower left. I hear a pot drop downstairs and know my Mother is up. My face turns blank into thinking about her. She caused this. I put on a black skirt and a white button down blouse with black buttons. I braid my hair to the side and put on my shoes. I walk downstairs and see Mother putting down a plate of sausage. "thank you." I whisper with no expression. I sit down and take two pieces of sausage, eating them fastly. I get up from the table and excuse myself silently. I walk outside and begin to walk to school. I finally reach the school and walk to the cafeteria. It is time for the choosing ceremony. I look around the room and see Todd. He stares blankly too. I wave and he nods to me. I purse my lips together and wait for them to call my name. I go before Todd since my last name, Carter, is before his, Jones. I walk forward to the front. I swallow my fear once again and take hold of the knife they handed out to me. I look at the bowls. Glass for Candor, water for Erudite, Coals on fire for Dauntless, stones for Abnegation and wood for Amity. I hold the knife over my hand and hold it over the fire. I slowly move the knife, causing blood to drip from my hand and into the now sizzling coals. I hear cheers coming from Dauntless and I smile. This is where I belong.
