Missing Darcy

"Darcy was the one thing that had kept Stella and I together, and now she had turned into the thing that was tearing us apart..."

Harry and Stella's once-strong relationship was completely erased. Harry unaware, Stella found out she was carrying Harry's baby. Determined to get Stella back, Harry stuck by her side nonstop after Darcy was born. Upon taking care of her, they learned things about each other and were brought closer than ever before. Darcy was their miracle.

Until she went missing.

10. Publicity

A loud crash echoed through the house. The sun was out but I heard no birds chirping. Instead, all I heard was the noise of hundreds of people yelling on my front lawn. I stumbled down the stairs and opened the front door.

I was suddenly blinded by cameras. Hundreds of reporters surged forward at the sight of me and my face drowsy with sleep standing in my front door.

"Mr. Styles! Over here!" called one.

"What was your reaction to the news?"

"Do you think the girl was your daughter?" another one asked.

What? What were they talking about. I told them all I had no comment and walked back into my living room and turned on the morning news. The sound of cameras flashing started up again as Stella walked downstairs, clearly awakened by all of the commotion. She angrily shut the drapes and stared at me for an explanation. But I didn't need to give her one. The news reporter gave us all the explanation we needed.

Just hours ago, investigators followed an anonymous tip regarding the search for the missing Darcy Styles, only daughter of former celebrity and boy band member Harry Styles. The body of one was found under a pile of firewood in the yard of a single family lakeside cabin, while the other was found still hiding inside of the cabin. Both girls were reportedly in terrible shape, with the living girl suffering many lacerations to her head area. The cause of death of the other little girl is still unknown.

"Officer, do you think the body is indeed that of little Darcy?" one reporter asked.

"Firstly, we have confirmed that the living girl is definitely Abby Miller, a toddler that went missing on a field trip 7 months ago. Her family has been notified. While I am unable to confirm anything at this time, I can say that the description of Darcy Styles does closely match that of the other girl. We will fill you in once we know more."

Murder, I thought. Our little girl was murdered. Stella collapsed onto my shoulder and wet my shirt with her tears. The reporters stayed outside all day. We didn't go outside again until that night, when a detective called to have us taken over to the hospital to see if we could identify a body.

The morgue was cold. What a terrible way to leave this world. With a heart full of ice.

The sheet was labeled M F A, meaning Missing Female A. A nauseous feeling hit me and didn't go away. This poor, helpless little girl was almost unidentifiable. Too much damage. There was no way I could recognize the face.

"The hair," Stella mumbled through the tears shaking her body uncontrollably. "It's curly like hers-"

"But Darcy's was longer." I interrupted. Stella nodded and wiped her face. "And none of her teeth were missing." I grabbed Stella's hand tight, tighter than I had ever held it before. Did we really just confirm that someone else's precious little girl was dead, and not ours? How did that make it any better?

"Keep looking," was all I said before we rushed out of the morgue, our bodies still cold even as we lay covered in blankets, all the way down to our hearts.
