Melody was young when her father mysteriously disappeared. She never understood why or where he had gone, but the coming of her 13th birthday brings new surprises that could lead to an adventure she never dreamed possible. Will she ever find out what really happened to her dad?

5. Grandma's House

For the next few days, Melody wanted desperately to go back to the woods, but so many obstacles came into her way! The next night, Melody decided she would sneak out again. Then her dog came into her bed and lay with her. As Melody went to get up, the dog sensed something different about the way Melody was “sneaking” out of bed instead of the racket she usually makes to go to the bathroom. The dog started to bark really loud. Melody tried to quiet her but it was no use. The whole family had woken up and Melody knew she didn’t have time to go by the time everyone was asleep again.

The next day Mrs. Wild announced that they were going to their Grandma’s house for the weekend and they were to spend two nights with her. Usually Melody would be super excited to visit Grandma Melly. Melody loved her and she was even named after her. Now, she wasn’t very excited. That just meant two more nights before she could go back to the forest. Melody faked being happy because she didn’t want to disappoint her mother.

“GRANDMA MELLY!” Melody cried as she ran into her favorite pair of wrinkly, old arms. Melody even forgot about the forest for the first few hours with her grandma. They caught up talking for a long time. They played checkers (since neither of them knew how to play chess), and they ate cookies with a nice glass of cold milk. Melody had almost forgotten how fun her Grandma was. At lunch, they both had peanut butter and nutella sandwiches with another glass of milk and a side of broccoli. Melody ate the top and her grandma ate the stem. Later they danced to an old record with polka music on it that her grandma had found in the basement after Melody’s Grandpa George died.

During this, Kate hung out with Emily next door and Mrs. Wild watched Melody and Melly intently. She took lots of funny pictures that were going to go in a scrap book. Melly was growing very old and Mrs. Wild realized that she was getting weaker too so she knew this visit was mandatory.

That night, Melody thought of the forest again. When she woke in the morning she was rather happy to find herself still in bed. She didn’t want to move from the warm blankets that her Grandma had set up for Kate and her to sleep in. Melody looked over at Kate who was sleeping contently. The next day went almost the same way the first day went except Kate was forced inside the house by Mrs. Wild so she participated more.
