5. Pizza and Lights

I walked home with Talia as per usual. She kept rambling on about

‘Oh how cute was that substitute maths teacher today?! He looked a bit young to be teaching…He makes trigonometry so easy!’

I didn’t even bother trying to tell her that Mr. Whitefair was there. I realised I must have been sleeping in class today, and far too deep in my dream to even realise we had a substitute teacher. We passed Talia’s house and I only vaguely heard her skipping up the steps and calling

‘Cya Jazz! Ring ya tonight!’ as she happily opened the door to her house.

When I reached my house I decided not to tell Tanya about my delusion in maths. Instead I put on a happy face and walked inside. Tanya wasn’t even home yet and Renee must have been out with some friends. I was alone and it felt good. I needed the time to think. I crashed through my bedroom door, and collapsed on my bed. I stared around my room for a bit, looking at the purple feature wall and matching desk light, books and old records scattered across its surface, the light streaming in through my window reflected in an odd way off of my purple duvet, casting a lavender glow on my cheek. I left my mind to wander around the familiar room, and my senses enjoy the sight, smell, and sound of home. I got up and set one of my favourite records in my ancient phonogram and listened for a bit, just relaxing.

I sighed, I wondered if my delusion was right, and if something incredibly wonderful but terrible was going to happen that night. If my delusion wasn’t even a delusion then I had something to worry about. If Mr. Whitefair really did know my parents then I had to find him again. I had to get him to tell me about them before my only chance of knowing them disappeared, just as he did, in a split second. I wondered vaguely what he could have meant about parallel. At that moment I heard a Tanya arrive home from work.

That night Tanya ordered pizza from Pizza Hut and Renee refused to eat it, kicking up a fuss about

‘Too many calories! Ewww! Saturated FAT! Ew.’ so Tanya made her a chicken salad, while we shared a Meatlovers pizza. Renee and Tanya were talking about their day and I was watching a news special on the television about some girl who survived rabies. It was just another typical night at Tanya’s.

Suddenly there was an urgent bang on the door.

‘QUICK! Jade let me in, hurry!’ I recognized Mr. Whitefair’s voice.

I rushed to the door in fear that he may have been in pain or something. When I opened the door he pushed past me and ran inside. I slammed and locked the door. Mr. Whitefair was a white as a ghost, and covered in blood. I opened my mouth to ask him what the hell was going on when he interrupted.

‘Jade, there’s no time. You must figure it out. He’s here! He found you! You must. Think hard, about your parents, about what I told you today in maths. You can do it. Think aloud.’

Tanya looked absolutely baffled as this strange blood-covered man rambled on in her house completely uninvited. Renee was running towards me, but I was a little preoccupied with Mr. Whitefair.

‘Parallel. Parents. Different World…’ I thought aloud. Nothing was happening. I didn’t even know what was meant to be happening. I tried to think of my parent’s location, in hope I would magically appear next to them, and have them give me some answers. But for all I knew they were in a different world. A parallel world? I tried that one, saying it aloud.

‘Parallel World?’ I whispered, praying it would be the answer.

There was a loud BANG as the sky answered me, the clouds swirled in impossible patterns and directions, the sun beat down heavily through the windows, through the roof and the light was so bright it was blinding. I noticed that Tanya was frozen and Mr. Whitefair was gone, Renee was frozen in time too, her hand stretched out touching my arm. I was alone in a bright light and for a second I was back in my first memory of life, my painful beginning. I cried out terrified by the memory and bright light. I was completely confused and bewildered. All of this took less than a second and suddenly it was all gone, replaced by a darkness that was painful on my eyes after the light. The darkness grew thicker and consumed me whole.
