6. A Whole New World

I opened my eyes, and found I was lying on a soft bed somewhere, surrounded by faces that I didn’t recognize, but who all seemed to recognize me. I looked around the room; it seemed to be some sort of old fashioned motel. Like an Inn, as they called them in the old days. I tried to sit myself up and everyone moved at once. The tall black haired tanned boy nearest to me helped me pull myself up, the round bouncy motherly looking woman stood on the other side of the bed and her hands fluttered uselessly as she tried to find some way to help me. I could see Renee hanging around the door looking as though she was about to make a run for it. She looked oddly out of place, in her pink mini dress and fake eyelashes. Everyone else was wearing old fashioned dresses and tunics.

‘Excuse me, but who are you all?’ I asked.

‘I am Blaze.’ said the black haired boy, his green eyes scanning my face assessing my reaction. I recognized those eyes, so similar to mine. He was really attractive, with a face all planes and hollows. I nodded simply and listened to the rest of the introductions. The motherly woman was Rosita and the large man with a moustache next to her was her husband Samlett, they owned the Inn. Two blonde identical girls were sitting at the foot of my bed; their names were Carlie and Gabriella. Everyone had friendly expressions on their faces, except for Renee who looked incredibly annoyed, that everyone wasn’t paying attention to her for once in her life.

‘Erm… can anyone tell me what’s going on here?’ I asked, ‘Why am I in bed?’Rosita laughed.

‘Dear, do you not remember us at all? You spent most of your childhood years playing hide and seek under this very bed! Why I am your ‘aunt’ Rosie! We’re so glad to have finally found you! Why’d you bring her with you?’ she said jerking her thumb in Renee’s direction. I looked at the people in the room trying to understand Rosita’s words. I wondered if I had woken up from my maths dream yet. I pinched my arm to see if I was awake. Ow, yes I was. I felt confused.  Suddenly I remember Mr. Whitefair.

‘Rosita do you know my parents?’ I asked.

‘Of course I do, well rather I did. They disappeared when you did. I assumed they were with you on the other side of the Gap? I knew they were hiding from Greyan. I thought they had taken you to the other side and started up a new life over there. When are they coming back?’ she asked smiling.

‘I don’t know,’ I bit my lip, ‘They weren’t with me. I don’t know my parents. I was found tortured half to death with no memories before the accident. I was brought up in California with Renee and her mother Tanya. The authorities gave me to social services for adoption.’ I explained. ‘I can’t remember life with them; I don’t remember any of this, or any of you.’ I watched my audience carefully as the realization of my words sunk in. At first shock, then horror crossed their features, replaced by anger.  Samlett hissed angrily

‘You mean to say that you have no idea about any of this? You don’t know what happened before your “accident”?’ cried the twins synchronized. ‘You don’t remember us at all?’ they added sadly. I shook my head. Blaze watched me with a critical expression on his face. He looked like he didn’t know what to make of the situation. Rosita and Samlett looked upset.

‘So where exactly is “this”?’ I asked.

‘This Devil’s Hollow, the bloodiest town on this side of Lake Erie.’ clarified Samlett.
