Sharp Like Summer

1. Sharp Like Summer

It was summer, and he told me he’d tell me everything I needed to know

I asked his favourite day of the year and now I know that I am it

We leant against each other in the river, and the grey-blue water reminded me of silk fabric, biting at my waist

Once we were underneath, we stayed like that, fingers knotted in each other’s hair,

not breathing, legs crossed, his freckles like bubbles in the moon-like blue light

Surfacing, I gasped him into my lungs and as today crashed into tomorrow,

the water dried on our skin and as it cracked we patched it up with words until it was impossible to break each other with our poised, sharpened hearts.
