Just a Coincidence

When 17 year old Maddi is told that she has to move back to her childhood town in Ireland, will her life be changed for better or for worse? Will she be willing to leave her Australian life behind? Or will something happen to make the move that little bit easier.

7. The New Job

Maddi took a deep breath while slowing down to a steady jog down the street. Just remembering yesterday made her mind go fuzzy and slow down. Maddi passed the small cafe that she would start working at today; it looked nice. It was cosy and welcoming, oozing with smells of vanilla and cinnamon. Books lined the back walls with all their spines facing out and the bookcase was painted with a deep burgundy brown. Tables were spaced out and surrounded by beanbags and cushioned couches.

Maddi quickly checked her watch and let out a loud gasp when she saw the time. Oh crap. Maddi's legs reacted before her brain did and she started running straight towards her house. She was supposed to be waitressing in 20 minutes and Maddi knew that she probably smelled rotten.

When she got home, she raced upstairs and had a quick shower. She wanted to make a good impression today, especially after what happened on the phone yesterday. She was running around her bedroom, grabbing her dark skinny jeans and a nice white t-shirt. She grabbed her shoes and ran into the bathroom, doing her hair neatly in a high ponytail and applying a little bit of make-up. She ran back downstairs and into the kitchen to grab her phone and wallet. It was convenient that she lived so close to everything in Mullingar. It was good to be able to walk everywhere.

"Good luck today sweetie." her mum said, placing her coffee cup down on the table.

"Thanks mum." Maddi said, typing something into her phone. She started walking out the door.

"Good luck honey." Her dad said, walking down the stairs and giving her a hug. "Don't let us down."

"Don't worry dad. I won't." Maddi pulled out of the hug and went to the front door, opening it and walking out into the chilly, Mullingar air.

She proceeded to jog down the street, checking the time on her phone. It read 7.55am. She had 5 minutes. She couldn't believe that she got ready in only 15 minutes. A new record for her. It usually took her an hour.

She reached to cafe front with 2 minutes to spare. She took a deep breath and walked inside. A sweet, looking girl looked up from the counter.

"Hi. You must be Maddi. I'm Erica." she said with a smile on her face.

Maddi smiled back. "Yes I am. Nice to meet you."

They stood silent for what seemed like hours, no knowing what to say. Talk about an awkward silence.

"Umm. So I guess I should get you familiar with everything.." Erica sighed hesitantly, leading Maddi to the counter, which managed to balance a huge silver coffee machine. The cafe was pretty quiet- though it was 8 in the morning! Maddi already felt the fatigue weigh on her eyelids. Today was going to be a big day.

***** After all the setting up and mucking around :) *****

"Hi, my name is Maddi, How can I help you?" Maddi repeated for what seemed like the a thousandth time. She never thought this could get so busy! Everyone was crowded on couches and had their nose in a book. Usually, Maddi would of loved the nice atmosphere but when the customers lift their attention out of their books and scream for their coffee- the 'nice' atmosphere seems to mysteriously fade away.

"Large flat white, not much froth. No chocolate on the top and please don't drown the coffee in milk!" A man harshly spoke from behind his book.

Maddi sighed. So bloody typical.

"Yes, anything else?"

"Nup." He said popping the 'p'.

"I'll bring it over straight away, sir." Maddi spoke in a tired tone- already sick of this man's arrogance.

"Damn right you will." He whispered, though with Maddi's super ears, she just heard.

"What is you problem?" She demanded, throwing her hands on her hips. "I'm tired of serving ungrateful fools like you!" Maddi huffed, watching the man lower his book from his face and stare her straight in the face.

"Oh. My. God." she whispered, "Greg?!"
