Just a Coincidence

When 17 year old Maddi is told that she has to move back to her childhood town in Ireland, will her life be changed for better or for worse? Will she be willing to leave her Australian life behind? Or will something happen to make the move that little bit easier.

My first Movellas novel. Sorry if it's bad...

25. Conversations

Bella checked her phone:

*30 missed calls from Madzo The Beast!*

"Ugh..." she grunted, shoving her phone back into her pocket. If her boss catches her doing that at work she'll be fired for sure. She can't handle that right now.

Bella rested her elbows on the bench of the checkout and rubbed her eyes.

'Why the hell is this stupid store opened 24/7! No one ever comes in!' she thought to herself. She was off in her little world as she heard someone clear their throat, making her jump.

"S-sorry." She apologised, as she started scanning the items.

The man chuckled, "No worries, hey, you were at the restaurant with Maddi before. Right?" he asked.

Bella looked up to see Jeremy, Maddi's friend and the waiter at the restaurant they went to before the concert.

Bella half-smiled. "Sure was".

He smiled back. It was an awkward silence as Bella continued to scan the grocery items.

"Um, are you okay?" He asked in his thick Irish accent. "I know I don't really know you but I can tell when someone is down."

Bella felt the tears start to well up in her eyes. "I'm fine." she sniffed, avoiding eye contact. The next thing she knew, she felt a strong hand on her shoulder.

"It's okay. I understand if you don't want to share your personal life with me. I'm a complete stranger. But I'm a good listener... although I don't even know your name." He laughed.

Bella held back the tears and stood up straighter. "It's Bella."

Jeremy smiled. "Nice to properly meet you. I'm Jeremy, but I think you already know that."

Bella nodded. She finished packing his groceries into the bag as her boss walked over to her checkout.

"Bella. Can you please step out here for a second. I need to have a word with you."

Bella looked over to Jeremy and he nodded as if to say 'not a problem'. She took a step out of the checkout and her boss started talking in a quiet tone.

"Look, Bella. I appreciate you coming out this early but I can tell you're not with it. I know you've been busy with everything with your mother but you really need some rest. This once only I'm still going to pay you for the whole 3 hours, but please go home and sleep." He handed her the pay check.

Bella nodded, still quite spaced out. "Thank you sir." she managed to let escape as her throat began dry and she turned back to the counter. Jeremy handed her the money.

"I was wondering when you finish your shift, cause maybe we could have a chat?" Jeremy smiled hopefully.

"Now actually." Bella responded, handing him the receipt.

"Awesome!" He grinned. "Do you wanna grab a cup of coffee or something?" He asked. "My shout."

Bella let a smile form on her lips. "I'd love to... but don't you want to be at home? Sleeping?" she asked.

Jeremy laughed. "Nah I'm a night owl! I live for the darkness." He winked.

She let out a little smile. "Well alright then." Bella grabbed her handbag and closed up her counter. Jeremy grabbed his grocery bags and they started walking out the door. They walked silently to his car, neither knowing what to say to each other.

"You wanna walk? Or we can drive? It's up to you." Jeremy asked her.

Bella thought for a moment. "Is it okay if we walk? I think I could use the fresh air." Jeremy agreed and put his shopping bags in the car then locked it again.

The walk to the coffee shop was only short. But the night was starting to get cool and Bella started feeling goosebumps grow on her exposed arms. They ordered their coffee's and went and sat in the park across the street. It was a small park. Just a little grassed area with a set of swings and a park bench under a willow tree that overlooked a little lake. The lights of the city across it sparkled in the still water like little stars.

The two of them sat on the bench sipping their coffee and listening to the faded hustle of the street behind them.

"So..." Jeremy started. "Do you want to talk about what's going on? I've been through some pretty rough patches too and the biggest mistake I made was keeping them to myself. But like I said, I'm a complete stranger so I don't blame you if you don't want to tell me. I understand."

Bella half smiled. "Well you and Maddi seemed pretty close, and you seem like a genuine guy, so why not. You might want to get comfy for this one." She suggested.

Jeremy turned on the seat to face Bella and brought one knee up to his chin. "I'm all ears." he grinned.

Bella took a deep breathe and started to recall everything. The issues with her mum, her friends, the money, her jobs, the treatment, her dad, the house. Everything! As she was speaking, she was watching Jeremy closely. She noticed how he was actually listening to her. Actually paying attention. Actually caring. The first guy in a long time that actually cared! She payed attention to his body language towards her. He was nodding to what she was saying and really thinking about it. When she had finally finished her novel that she had just read out, she slumped back into the park bench and sighed. "So there you have it. My life story."

Jeremy slid closer to her and put his arm around her shoulders. "I'm sorry you've had to go through all that. You're a special girl and you only deserve 100% happiness." he said to her.

"Thanks..." she said quietly, looking away. Jeremy suddenly stood up and took Bella's hand. He led her out from under the cover of the tree and started looking up at the stars.

"It's so beautiful in Australia." He smiled, putting his arm around Bella's waist. She nodded and looked up as well. But in that moment, a slight breeze picked up and she started to feel cold again. Jeremy noticed and took off the grey hoodie he had on over his waiter uniform and gave it to her.

"No I can't take it. Then you'll be cold." She handed it back to him.

"Honey, I'm way too hot to ever be cold!" He winked, un-tucking his white shirt to make himself more comfortable. She laughed.

"You're just full of those cocky lines aren't you!" Bella giggled, pulling on the hoodie over her head.

"I'm just awesome!" Jeremy insisted, lying down on the grass. Bella joined him and he pulled her closer, draping his arm around her shoulders. She could feel herself getting warmer as they breathed in sync, lying there, on the grass, under the starry sky.

"So what happened to you and Maddi?" Bella asked, curious to know what had gone on between the two. She noticed Jeremy's smile morph into a frown. Now it was his turn to spill.

He sighed. "It was complicated. We were besties. Like as tight as two people could get. Well, three people actually. It was always her, Niall and me and we were seriously like the perfect best friends. We had known each other since we were born and always got along, and when we were ten and my parents told me that Maddi was moving away to the other side of the world. I was actually so distraught I pretty much isolated myself from everything and everyone until she left. I didn't see her once for three weeks up until she moved. We were still kids but Niall and i both took it hard. And we both liked her. Like, really really REALLY liked her. But we both didn't know about each others feelings until she had gone and it got out. Then the battle began and we hated each other. My dad and I moved away and we haven't spoken since." He was quiet now.

"Do you still like her?" Bella asked cautiously.

"I mean, I've only just seen her again. I don't know."

Bella gulped as she felt the jealousy rise in her brain. Maddi had never said anything to anyone about her childhood in Ireland but how could she forget her best friends there? How could she forget Jeremy? Her brain was ticking fast, thinking about everything that had been said tonight. As the thoughts were replayed back in her mind, she felt a pair of soft lips meet hers. She kissed back for a second but then pulled away.

"What about Maddi?" Bella asked quietly. "I think she might like you."

Jeremy sighed. "She left me for too long. I'm over her." And he kissed her passionately again. And this time, Bella did not hesitate for a second.
