1. Chapter 1

"Sarabeth Jackson!" I hear a rough voice yell from downstairs.  "I thought I asked you to do the dishes!"

"Sorry, Uncle Jed," I call back, cursing myself in my head.  Dinner of Shame tonight.  And probably dog walking of his two horrible pitbulls, Lacy and Glitter.  Horrible names, right?  My cousin "sister" Miranda named them.  Of course, she insists on going by 'Macy' because she thinks it sounds 'popular.'  I mean, there's nothing wrong with the name Macy.  I like that name.  But I don't understand why she thinks changing her name will change people's opinion of her.

But I digress.

I get up  off my bed and leave my room, painted a horrible shade of popcorn-butter yellow (not even the GOOD kind of popcorn butter, the really gross cheap kind.) and run down the stairs.  My uncle stands there as I enter the kitchen and grab a sponge and some steel wool for the really bad sticks.

"Oh, no." He says condesendingly, plucking the steel wool from my fingertips.  "You didn't do these when asked.  So no help from this," He waves the steel wool in my face.  He goes to leave the kitchen, then turns back to me.  "Oh," He says, like he's just had an idea.  "And I want this kitchen spotless before dinner.  Which you will make."

"Yes sir." I say coldly.  I hate this.

"Glad we understand each other."  And with that he leaves.  I turn to the pile of dirty dishes and start washing.  I think about how my life got this way.

I remember the day it happened.  My parents left me at home to go see a movie, and I had been IMing with my friend Jake.  We were just talking about the events of the school week when I got a call on the phone from my mom's friend Janice.  I knew instantly that something was wrong.

"Sarabeth," She said, and I could tell she was crying.  "It's your parents."  My heart had stopped.  "There was a crash."

I remember hanging up the phone after she told me she'd be at the house shortly.  Jake's frantic IMs as to where I was, wondering what had happened.  Janice showing up at my house.  Sitting on the couch with her, crying my heart out.  The memorial service.  Every single person in the house looking at me sadly.  Just saying I'm sorry.  Even when nothing they could have said or done would have fixed anything.

And then the horrible day when I met my dad's brother Jed for the first time.  When I realized why my father had kept me from meeting him.  Meeting "Macy" and Lacy and Glitter.

Which leads me to today.

I scrub the last of the plates in silence, then throw some water on the stove to boil.  I'll just make pasta. Again.
