Walking in Slow Motion

Axi is just a normal girl in a gifted family. She isn't amazingly pretty, or intelligent, or popular. She's just a girl who gets bullied in school because her sister's dating the most dreamed-about guy there: and he's two years old than her.
Then she meets Seymour, a friend she never knew was always right beside her. When their teacher walks out of class, Axi begs him to teach her film editing-- a talent nobody in her family has.
But Seymour's teaching brings a new responsibility. In the middle of her first editing session, Axi discovers that she has skills. Special skills. Supernatural skills...
Who is Axi? WHAT is she? And will she ever be the same again...?
NEW BLURB! Do you like it? :)

Kameka :)

The floor is freezing. It's so cold that it seems to suck every last drop of warmth out of me. My teeth chatter, and I bring my knees to my chest, lie down and curl up.

Where am I? Maybe I'm in another cael. One made entirely out of darkness. Maybe that bear or whoever sent it--

The bear. I completely forgot to ask Gizzy about the bear. We were having so much fun in paradise...

If the bear comes now, I don't stand a chance. Maybe if I'd asked, Gizzy would have given me some tips on how to fight it properly... and what was it?

I feel like crying. I curl my hands into fists and touch them to my lips, fighting the tears that threaten to slide out of my eyes. I blink, and when I open my eyes again, everything is fuzzy. "Gizzy," I whisper. "Mom. Dad? Lex..."

I think back to what Gizzy told me in Idyllica. About me only becoming a tractarora because Lex broke a childhood promise to me. I didn't think that was a good enough reason at all. Lex should have become special. I am not special. I don't care how much I've tried to convince myself, I'm not special. I'm not. Everyone knows it. Lex is special. Lex has beauty, popularity, a boyfriend, actual friends...

I have two friends.

One friend, now that Gizzy's gone.

I'm not popular.

Not pretty.

Not amazingly smart.

I'm patronized.

I'm laughed at.

I'm bullied.

It hurts.

I can't believe I'm only facing this properly when I'm close to death.

I am close to death... aren't I?

Where am I?

I stretch my arms out as far as I can. The tips of my fingers brush stone, and I quickly scramble over to it.

It's a rough stone wall, cool to the touch. I press my tear-stained cheeks against it. It calms me. Something inside my mind slots into place.

I breathe in once, slowly, and when I breathe out a ball of light begins to form in my hands. It's harsh, like it comes from an LCD screen, but it does its job.

I am in a cave, about as wide as two stretched arms (like I discovered) and as high as I am tall. I am kneeling in front of a barred doorway. I try to open it, but I know before I even touch it that it is locked.

I had thought that knowing where I was would have shed some more light on my situation, but it just brings up more questions. Who locked me in here? Why did they do it? Where am I, in general? The corridor beyond my cell is just as dark as the room.

I think I'm in a prison.

But a prison where? This just gets worse...

Suddenly, I hear something. I... feel something. Footsteps. Someone is coming...

Quickly, I extinguish the light nestling in between my palms. I close my eyes and hold my breath, trying to extend my senses further down into the corridor. I sense the footsteps getting closer, and closer, and closer...

I hear a key turning in a rusted lock.

I open my eyes and suck in some air. I see a light hovering in front of me. It belongs to a torch--a flaming torch--and it illuminates a man standing in front of me. He is wearing armour on his body, but no helment or visor on his head.

A knight?! This is getting crazier and crazier...

But then I remember that, from now on, my life is going to be crazier than this. So I say nothing when the door to my cell swings open. I say nothing when the man enters and jerks me roughly to my feet. I say nothing when he shackles my hands together. I say nothing as he pushes me out the door.

But I do say something when his hands linger on my back for a few moments more than needed. A spark ignites in me, my handcuffs snap in two, and I whirl around and slap him with all the strength I can muster. Tiny jolts of electricity shoot from my skin and crackle when they hit his armour. "Don't. Touch. Me."

The knight's face contorts in pain as the raw energy burns the skin underneath the metal armour. When I take my hand away, the sparks leave, and the knight falls to his knees, dropping his torch, which goes out. I don't stop to check if he'll be all right, because I know he will. I know how much electricity I just used. I know what that amount will do.

And I know that I'm becoming more powerful by the minute.

Once again, I allow light to radiate from my palms. I stride down the corridor. A few leftover sparks crackle around me.

When I turn the corner, I see a tiny pinprick of light. I go through more hallways, each one becoming more luxurious and brighter then the last.

Finally, at the end of the corridor, I find myself looking into a throne room. A man whom I think is a king is speaking to a small figure crouched before him. I hide behind a statue in the hall and listen closely to hear what he says.

"So what I am understanding is that you disobeyed the Committee's orders, snuck out of Iazizozosibip, left your true ward alone and sent this cael into chaos, just to see this girl, Gizisibps?"

Gizzy's alive.

And I'm in her home cael.

And I'm presuming that the girl he's talking about is me.

But what does he mean by true ward? And wasn't Gizzy supposed to stay with me?

"I... I'm sorry, Your Highness! I'm sorry, I'm sorry..."

"Why did you do it?"

I hear Gizzy take a deep breath. "Izzie... Izziezs... she's gone. Vanished. She was meant to be Maxine's mentor, but she disappeared, and since she wonders off a lot anyway, I thought this time was no different. But when she didn't come back to get ready to meet Maxine, like she was supposed to, I was so scared she would get into trouble when she came back. So I thought I'd go to Shawn and Maxine. I was going to go to England after I met Ax--Maxine in America, but now I'm here, and I can see what I did was a mistake, but please, I was only doing it to help a friend!"

There's silence. I peer around the edge of the statue to see his reaction. The king is looking at her like he's deciding what to do.  "You almost got her killed when the Aegori sent that bear demon."

"That's not my fault." Gizzy is trembling. "And I defended her as best as I could."

"Very true." Some of the rage starts to fade from the king's face. "Where is that girl? I asked Lisibziie to bring her up from the dungeons. You two!" He jerks his chin towards a couple of other knights. "Go see what he has gotten up to!"

The two knights bow and walk off. "Yes, sir."

Gizzy lets out a wail. "You sent Lisibziie to get her? Who knows... he's unpredictable... he might have hurt her!"

"I don't think so," the king mutters under his breath. The only reason I can hear him is because of my extended senses, and it is because of them that I see the tiniest smile flicker on his features. "I don't think so," he says, louder this time, to Gizzy. "I have him tracked. And next time you address me as Your Grand Highness."

Gizzy bows her head. "Yes, Your Grand Highness," she sniffs.

"Axi," she whispers to herself. "Axi, Axi, I'm sorry. I hope you're okay, Axi. It was all my fault. I should have told you. I'm sorry, Axi, I'm sorry. If I ever see you again, you have the right to stop being friends with me. I'm a liar."

I slide out from behind the statue. The king isn't looking ahead and Gizzy is looking at the floor. I start to walk froward, and when I get to the humungous throne room doors, I stop. "You're no liar, Gizzy."

Their expressions are priceless. Gizzy looks at me with adoration and wonder on her face. The king's eyes grow big and he looks at me in bewilderment as I stride forward.

"So, what do you want with me?"

"Where's Lisibziie? How did you get up here?"

I shrug. "Lightning," I say. "It was cool."

"Yeah, lightning."

Just then, the two knights come up the stairs leading to the dungeons. They walk towards the throne room, dragging someone unconscious between them. It's Lisibziie.

"See?" I say nonchalantly, although my heart is pounding. "Lightning." I sweep my hand towards Lisibziie as if chucking him aside. Like, That's nothing. I can do better. I turn back towards the king, to see him regarding me with a mixture of expressions. Wariness, amazement, a little bit of anger and... fear?

"So," I say, curtsying to him. "I'm Maxine Lenet. I know where I am, and now I want to know why."
