Walking in Slow Motion

Axi is just a normal girl in a gifted family. She isn't amazingly pretty, or intelligent, or popular. She's just a girl who gets bullied in school because her sister's dating the most dreamed-about guy there: and he's two years old than her.
Then she meets Seymour, a friend she never knew was always right beside her. When their teacher walks out of class, Axi begs him to teach her film editing-- a talent nobody in her family has.
But Seymour's teaching brings a new responsibility. In the middle of her first editing session, Axi discovers that she has skills. Special skills. Supernatural skills...
Who is Axi? WHAT is she? And will she ever be the same again...?
NEW BLURB! Do you like it? :)

9. Attacks

"GIZZY!" I scream, as the bear reaches towards me with a snarl. My legs give way, and I fall over on the ground. I brace myself for terrible pain as the bear thumps towards me.

"It's all right, Axi!" Suddenly, Gizzy is in front of me, driving the bear back with some sort of weapon crackling with electricity. "Hi-ya!" She flicks it like a whip, and a tendril of electricity strikes the bear's arm. It roars in pain and staggers backwards, but the fight isn't over yet.

When the bear stumbles towards us again, Gizzy is ready. She snaps her weapon twice and electricity strikes the bear from both sides. Then she swipes her arm and whacks him square in the stomach with a bolt of electricity.

The bear gives an ear-splitting roar and crashes to the ground, writhing in pain.

Gizzy turns her head and looks at me, her weapon still pointed at the bear. "Go, Axi! I'll hold him. Just run a couple of alleys down. I'll meet you there!"

I look at her. She's panting from the exertion of fighting the bear, and her legs are trembling. "But... I can't just leave you here..."

Gizzy shakes her head. "You're no use to our people if you die. And besides, this is part of my job, Axi. Go!"

Although her words have led me to become even more curious about myself, I nod slowly. What use am I here, anyway? Cowering in a corner. Gizzy shouldn't have to worry about me, even if it is her job.

I stand up slowly, my legs shaking. "I'll go. See you, Gizzy... WATCH OUT!"

The bear, having regained its footing while Gizzy was talking to me, now takes a swipe at her as she whirls around. She gives a little scream as her weapon is knocked from her hands and she flies through the air, smacking against the alleyway wall and crumpling to the floor unconscious, blood trickling from her arm and torso.

"GIZZY!" I want to run to her, but I know I can't afford to. Now it is up to me to fight the bear. I snatch Gizzy's weapon from the floor and flick it at the bear lumbering towards me.

Nothing happens.

I panic. I try again and again to get electricity to jolt from the weapon, but it remains un-electrified. Maybe it broke when Gizzy dropped it, maybe it only works for her. I don't know. But now I'm up against a creature from a nightmare, with nothing but my own self.

I'm going to die.

The bear realizes this too. It stops lumbering towards me, and something resembling a smile appears on its horrible face. I can almost hear it think. Easy prey.

It lunges.

As it does, everything seems to slow down. I see the bear's fur ripple, see it exhale. I see its eyes narrow, its claws twitch, bent on tearing me apart. I see it flying towards me like a furry, deadly Superman, and I throw my arms up instinctively.

God, please don't let me die.

I close my eyes.

I wait.

And wait.

Death doesn't come.

I open my eyes.

My hands fall to my sides in wonder.

The bear is frozen.
