24. Darkness

"Haz, what do you mean 'give her a chance'?"
"You should just see what could happen."
"Are you crazy? No way!"
"Why? She's a nice girl!"
"Yeah, nice girl equals ugly girl."
"She's not that bad."
"She's hideous."
"But she's nice!"
"Yeah, whatever, you know how I feel about you-know-who."
"And you know how she feels...you know she doesn't see you that way."
"Yeah she sees him that way."
"But not the other girl! She likes you."
"Yeah, well, I'm stuck."
"Just think about it."
I hear soft footsteps fade away from the stairway.
How did they not see me?
I feel pains in my stomach.
Well, I guess that really shows our kiss meant absolutely nothing.
I'm just the hideous girl to pity. The 'nice girl'.
He likes somebody else.
But why did Louis have to say all those horrible things?
I know that I'm not the best girl to look at but I thought he was warming up to me at least.
He really doesn't like me.
I wait a few moments before returning to the living room.
I'm too distressed to pay much attention to the movie.
I sit by myself while Niall and Marie and Harry and Skyler cuddle together on the couch.
Louis and I sit separately.
I don't talk to anyone.
It's not that I like Louis, it's just that I thought us spending all this time together meant he actually was starting to like me.
At least as a friend.
But now I see how he really feels.
It hurts to know that yet another guy will never be interested in me.
We get through the entire movie, and for some reason my sadness becomes so overwhelming that I start to cry.
I don't know where it comes from; it just starts pouring.
I try to hold it in, but once the tears have escaped my eyes, I can't take it back.
Luckily it's dark in the room.
Skyler, being my best friend, can sense it right away.
"Mandy, come help me in the kitchen. Anyone else want a drink?"
Skyler takes everyone's drink orders, then I follow her to the kitchen.
"What's wrong babe?"
It takes me a while to calm down. I take huge gasps of air between each word.
I start breaking down again, and Skyler hugs me.
"You need to be alone, huh?"
I nod my head quietly.
She leads me to the back door, and she guesses that I'm going to take a walk.
I walk around to the front of the house and start down the sidewalk.
I walk for about ten minutes when I start to hear footsteps behind me.
I look behind me to see a dark figure walking in my direction.
I start to walk faster, and notice that the footsteps speed up as well.
I look behind me again; the figure is even closer.
I try to walk faster, but find the figure can out-walk me.
My heart beats in my chest faster than my feet can hit the pavement.
Then I feel a hand wrap around my arm.
I attempt to scream, but a hand covers my mouth immediately.
Then everything goes black.
