38. Bills, Bills, Bills

I'm in the hospital for three days, with Jim watching my every move.
The doctors do a ton of tests to make sure I don't have any brain damage.
By the third day, Jim is really getting on my nerves.
"Do you need your pillow fluffed?"
"No, Jim."
"Would you like some water?"
"NO, Jim."
"Do you want-"
"JIM, ya know what I really want?"
"What?" He rushes to my side.
I push my finger to his mouth.
"For you to be quiet,"I tell him.
His shoulders slump and he sinks to the corner, where he starts nibbling on his nails.
I feel bad for the poor guy. He's told me all about himself by now, and he really needs this job. He really likes it and will do anything to succeed. So I give him something to do.
"Actually, Jim," he perks up at the sound of his name, "do you think you could get me an apple juice from the vending machine down the hall?
He nods his head energetically, and bounds out of the room, dollar in hand.
He nearly runs into the doctor, who enters the room.
"Well Amanda, your test results have come out fine. Looks like just some slight damage that healed quickly. You're free to leave. Do you have family here to get you?"
"Jim- well, I have someone, yes doctor. Thank you."
He nods his head and is about to exit the room when I stop him.
He turns back, "Yes?"
"Where is the desk so I can pay my fees for the tests that my insurance doesn't cover?"
"That won't be necessary, Ms. Rafferty. The young man a few days ago covered it."
I immediately feel a lump in my throat. I try to swallow it to thank the doctor, but I can't, so I simply nod.
When he leaves, I dress in the clothes I had on before the accident.
Jim appears shortly after, and we make our way to the airport.
But the same thought never leaves my mind.
Louis paid my hospital bill.
Great guy with a guilty conscience.
