31. Meeting

“Why are we even here?” Evelyn mumbled, resting her head in her hands as she slouched forward with her elbows on the table, despite the formal dining setting. “Harry thinks I’m a criminal and will make me confess for something I didn’t do and… Niall…” she paused, sighing in depression over the events. “I couldn’t bear to see him again.”

“Think about it, E,” Ariana replied, drawing patterns nervously on her plate with her finger. “Harry probably read your letter and is here to make amends.”

“He just wants to blame me for everything… AGAIN,” Evelyn said, her voice still monotone. “I can’t be friends with Niall anyway. Once you’ve been that close to someone… you can’t go back to knowing them because you already see as the perfection that they are.”

Ariana sighed, admitting to defeat in trying to make Evelyn understand. She looked up, scanning her eyes across the restaurant until she spotted Harry entering through the main door. Her heart skipped a beat, butterflies gathering in the pit of her stomach, but they soon diminished as Niall followed quickly behind Harry.

“Smile E,” Ariana said out of the corner of her mouth as she smiled towards the two. “Your perfection is here.”

“Hello Ariana, Evelyn,” Harry said, taking a seat beside Ariana.

“Its great to see you Ariana,” Niall said, taking a seat to the left of Evelyn. Ariana felt the pressure building between Evelyn and Niall; it was too thick to cut. “And the same to you Evelyn,” he added slowly, looking over to her. Evelyn nodded, biting her lower lip in desperation to keep her emotions locked up.

“I am sure I speak for Evelyn and for me, when I say it is a pleasure to meet with you again,” Ariana replied. Evelyn sniffled, nodding again as she looked at her plate.

There was silence for the next few minutes, the four unsure of how to start a conversation.

“Excuse me,” Evelyn whispered after a moment, standing and rushing towards the balcony of the restaurant.

“Evelyn,” Niall called after her, standing up. Quickly, he turned towards Harry. “We have to do it now… I can’t lose her again.”

“But they aren’t here yet,” Harry replied, cautiously glancing over to Ariana.

“I don’t care,” Niall said beginning to walk to the balcony. “Here or not, I’m doing it.” Harry mumbled something, before taking Ariana’s hand and leading her onto the balcony as well.

Evelyn looked out over the city the sparkling lights seeming to blend into the night sky. Suddenly, Niall was beside her, enjoying the beauty of the evening with her.

“I need you to move on,” Evelyn whispered to him, still looking out. “Or tell me that you hate me. Or that I need to move on. Or that you don’t love me. Anything. I need you to break me.”

“I can’t do that,” Niall replied, facing her. “I don’t hate you. I need you to stay with me, right now in the present. I love you. I can’t break you. And I can’t move on.” Evelyn turned to him, her lower lip trembling and her eyes locking with his.

“Niall, I…”

“Niall let’s do this,” Harry whispered to Niall, brushing past him. Niall nodded, his thoughts lost in what Evelyn was about to say.
