4. The Elders

When we parked in front of the house a big shiver went down my spine, the mansion was enormous. It was a fading shade of grey which turned into black and then grey again. It must have its years because it looked like it was going to fall apart soon. We rang the bell and the butler answered the door. The inside of the house was even more fascinating than the outside, all the furniture looked like it belonged to a museum and priceless paintings decorated the walls. The walls were black but there were huge windows that allowed the sunlight to illuminate the house. He ushered us to a gigantic room where three figures sat, their expressions blank. They greeted us by our full names, even though we have never met them before. Theodore had short blonde hair with icy blue eyes that when you looked at them felt like they could read your soul, but they were so wise and old as well. Even though he had no wrinkles you could tell he was old. Christopher had jet black hair that brushed his shoulders and hazel eyes that sparkled in a way I’ve never seen before. And Fiona had long, light brown hair that danced near her waist and deep chocolate brown eyes that were so filled with love and concern that it was hard to think that anyone ever got killed by these people at all. She looked at me and nodded before turning her attention to my father.

“Marcus Menthe, what brings you and your family here? Any of their powers out of control?” asked Theodore.

“Thank you for your concern but no it is not about that at all.” Dad said calmly.

“Then what is it?”

“I would like to speak to you about it privately, if it is possible.”

“Yes, of course.”

We got ushered out of the room. Katrina looked a bit offended; she was obviously very curious about this topic and was not enjoying being left out. Austin just looked bored; he sat down on an old fashioned chair that was nearby and took out his phone.

“No reception, this place sucks!” said Austin. Here we are, in the house of the Elders, Dad debating about some mythical creatures that eat dogs and probably people and Austin was complaining about there no being reception in a house that was probably older than electricity itself.

Marcus talked with the Elders: Theodore, Christopher and Fiona. They talked about the creatures and called them ‘Earth devils’.

The Elders talked to Katrina, Austin and I. they said that if we saw the Earth Devils we must not run but head to our house immediately. It was an intentional way of telling us (the ‘little ones’) to stay away from those monsters we’ve been seeing, that they were not friendly at all, but we already knew. At the end when everyone was about to leave Fiona approaches me. She stares at my eyes for a second before speaking.

“Remember this even when you think it is impossible, child, because I’ve seen miracles happen before my eyes.” She said, and her eyes were filled with memories, memories of times before me, memories I will never understand.

“Love can change a person completely, even if it seems impossible, never give up faith in what you really believe in. But Stephanie, do not let it change you for the bad.” And she left me wondering what that all meant. Then I remembered that Fiona’s talent was to see the future, what is my future? To meet some boy and….what? Did I even understand what she meant?
