2. Melanie

“Good morning Ms. Menthe” said the bus driver politely.

“Hey” I replied half heartedly.

The bus driver just looked at me and let it go, he was so nosy.

I took my usual seat next to Melanie, who was texting on her phone. She looked up and smiled.

“Hey there, stranger” she said.

“Well, hello, who do I have the pleasure of meeting?” I replied.

We burst out laughing and she scooted over so that I could sit down.

Melanie had strawberry blonde hair and blue sparkly eyes. She was fit and tall, with long legs and full lips. She was pretty, and she usually was aware of the looks she got in class, but didn’t make much of them. Melanie was bold and cheerful, with a heart full of sweetness and love. But she had built up a wall since her last break up, and I knew that sometimes she fell apart, but this was Melanie, so she just put on a smile and kept going. Once you earned her trust she would do anything for you, she’d jump off a cliff if that as what it took to save you, never worrying what might become of her. I never forgave Brandon; he broke the heart of an angel. I looked at her phone and saw the contact; it read “Mike” at the top. Mike was Brandon’s best friend. I watched as Melanie’s eyes filled with tears and she looked at me with clear pain in her eyes.

“Oh, Mel.” I said, as I wrapped my arms around her and felt the hot tears stain my shoulder, I didn’t care.

“He-he said I was the most horrible person” she took a breath before continuing “On Earth”

“Mel, you know that’s not true, he’s just being a jerk. He’s just doing it because he knows he lost something precious and beautiful.”

“You’re just saying that because you’re my best friend” she said between sobs.

“And besties know everything” I whispered. “Now stop crying for someone who doesn’t deserve your precious tears” I said as I looked her in the eye with complete seriousness.

She wiped her tears with the sleeve of her sweater and looked at me.

“What would I do without you?” she asked.

“Die.” I said simply, and shrugged my shoulders.

And we both started laughing again while the other students looked at us like lunatics. We got off the bus laughing and having fun, it was great to see her happy, it made me happy too. She chatted happily as we made our way to our lockers, on the way I spotted Mike.

“I got to do something, you go ahead.” I told Mel.

“Ok?” she responded as I made my way through the crowd and stopped right in front of Mike.

“Mike” I said firmly.

“Steph!” he was about to hug me but I dodged him and continued.

“I need you to pass this on to Brandon.”

“S-sure” he replied.

“I want him to stop hurting Melanie, I want him to stay out of her life and make her feel like crap, because that’s what he’s doing. She deserves so much better than this douche, and I won’t forgive him or you for that matter, easily either. Stop sending her hate-filled texts, or my fist will feel very attracted to your face and it will decide to leave a bruise there, got it? Now, don’t just stand there and look at me, go! Before my fist sees your face!”

He nodded and started running, everyone knew it hurt A LOT when my fist connected with their faces, some people who witnessed it are scared of me, the others just make sure they’re on my good side, I don’t use this often but Mel is my best friend, and I will not have her hurting. I reached my locker and found Melanie waiting there.

“Hey” I said.

“Where’d you go?” she asked curiously.

“I just had some unfinished business”

“Why do I have the feeling that you won’t tell me no matter how much I beg?”

“Because your gut is telling you the truth, I won’t say one word.”

“But I’m your best friend.”

“I know that”

“So then you have to tell me”

“Nope” and I laughed; it felt so much like 3rd grade.

She pouted and gave me the doggy eyes. I laughed again and headed towards my Role Call class.

In Role Call I saw the most popular girl, Dianna, sitting next to Brandon. Her leg was touching his and she was leaning so that her lips were close to his ear, he was smiling. I shook my head and sat on the seat behind them, I would make sure he understood me, just in case   Mike forgot or just simply didn’t say the things he should have said. When Role Call was over I tapped Brandon’s shoulder lightly, he turned around and when he saw who it was and the expression on my face he took a step back and put his hands in front of him as if in surrender.

“Whoa there! No need to get all feisty!” he said.

“Oh, yes there is. You say one thing to or about Mel, touch her, look at her or even text, chat or whatever, you’ll have to deal with me, got it?” I said with fury.

“Ok, fine, she’s not that hot anyway. But you…”

“I think you need to leave before my fist connects with your jaw.” I said, staring him in the eye.

“Ok, stay away from Mel and you, got It.” he said, giving me a ‘thumbs up’. I rolled my eyes and headed to class.
