Daily Story Challenge-Month 1-Back To School

This is the first month of my one-year story challenge, starting on 1st Sept 2012 and ended on 31st August 2013. This is the movella for the first month, and the theme is 'Back To School'. Every day this month I'll post a small poem or story around the theme.

31. Day 30

I tried to respond but the words got stuck in my throat, like chunky, solid bits of candyfloss.

"Answer me!" Daniel demanded, stepping closer to me. My heart fell into my toes this time, crumpling as it hit the soles of my shoes. There was no demanding Miss Popular at this fair, he was on his own, while he trod on my heart through my shoe, both physically and metaphorically. Tears surged forward, and he seemed to get even angrier. He took a fistful of my jacket and shook it violently. I felt myself stumble and my grip slipped on the photo frame. And, like that, I couldn't hold back the tears any longer. I fled, as they rained down, distorting my vision.

I stood at the edge of the moonlit river. My tears mingled with the crystal-like water, fallling almost silently-'drip, drop, drip, drop'. It seemed to soothe my racing heart and unsteady breathing, the moon's tranquil form playing upon the trickling contents of the river.

I heard him over and over in my mind; his cold, hard tone haunted me, like icicles piercing me all over. What did I even see in him? I wish I couldn't hear it. Maybe I could forget. Was there a way to drown out his voice? Listen, there it was again, louder this time. 'Wait! Just listen! Don't. Do. It'. Do what? What was I doing wrong? I glanced down at the water.

Everything's so wrong. You're so wrong, girl, a voice whispered to me. It sounded so much like my own...

The next few moments were a blur-I began to lean forward, arching over the river, as I realised that his voice was real and he was right behind me, racing over the grass with a terrified expression. The next thing I knew, I was falling. And that's when I went under.

"...lease b...alright. Please ... alright. Please be alright," I heard, as the world seemed to slot back together again.

"Who are you? What happened? Wh-" I tried to said, but it just came out as mumbling.

"You nearly drowned," now recognizing the voice's owner, I could immediately tell who it was. I started to shuffle away but he stopped me, resting a hand on my shoulder. "Please, don't, I never... Here," he held out something cool and decorated.

"My photo frame. I thought it had smashed..."

"I got it fixed for you. Look, I never meant any of that. I do like you. I really do."

"You're not too bad yourself-"

"No, you didn't understand me. I really, really do," he said, his cheeks turning crimson. My mouth turned into an 'O' shape that was so wide, I didn't realise it was possible for human beings and I nodded. "I shouldn't have said that, you probably hate me now and I-"

"Shh. I don't wanna hear any more. You're wrong. I...feel the same way," I smiled at him, and my heart leapt as I received an award-winning grin back. I don't think I'll ever stop breathing so quickly after tonight. It's still night, right?
