“Now for your second stage of training.” Jeff declared, “We’re going swimming.”
“Ok, let me grab my bathing suit.” I chirped.
“Don’t worry, you won’t be needing that.” he said grabbing my arm and pulling me down the hall.
We entered a large room with dark blue walls and sandy floors. The sound of seagulls echoed in my ears. “Is this......” I asked puzzled, “Is this an indoor beach?”
“Pretty cool huh?” Jeff smiled.
“You’re darn right it’s pretty cool!” I exclaimed.
“Now, I’m about to show you why a child of Poseidon never needs a swimsuit or scuba gear.” he chuckled. And all of a sudden Jeff had me in his arms and he was running into the water.
I screamed and struggled to get free. He pitched me into the deep water and dove in himself, swimming deeper and deeper into the depths. I swam after him kicking and pulling at the water but it was no use, he was way too fast.
How long have I been under? I stop swimming and tread in place, I look around at the dark shapes floating around below me. Then out of nowhere Jeff appeared and wrapped his arms around me.
“Your completely dry!” I yelp, then cover my mouth. I blow bubbles and then say, “Testing testing, one two three.”
“Ya we can talk, breathe, and see underwater.” Jeff explained counting off each point on his fingers. “We can also stay down here as long as we want without getting wet.” he added.
“How do you swim so fast?”
“We control the currents.” he said plainly.
“Is there anything we can’t do?” I ask sarcastically.
“As long as it has something to do with our father, then we can do anything.” he says then he’s gone. A dolphin in his place.
Thing of a dolphin, imagine yourself growing a tail and fins.
What the heck? Who said that?
“Jeff, where are you?” I called through the darkness.
River, I’m right in front of you, now do what I said. Think dolphin.
By the end of the day I had morphed into pretty much every creature under the sea and I was exhausted. The games are in 5 days and I still haven’t learned any fighting skills. Why have a sword if you don’t know how to use it? I love Jeff, honestly I do, but he’s being just so persistent with this whole ‘learning the ways of the seas’ thing.
I flopped onto my bed and an exasperated sigh. I felt like I could sleep until the games started. It’s not like I’m going to win anyway. I can sleep, wake up, and then sleep eternally in the underworld. Sounds pretty good.
“Enough of your suicidal thoughts Riv, I'll teach you how to fight.” Jeff murmured and lied down next to me.
Great, so now he can hear my thoughts too! I snuggle closer and absorb the sweet smell of salt wafting off of him. “Thanks, but I don't think you should bother, I’m never going to win.” I murmur.
“Don’t talk like that, I’m going to do everything in my power to help you win.” he promised and wrapped his arms around me, “Now go to sleep.”
“OUCH!” I groaned grabbing my arm, “What the heck Jeff! You said you were taking it easy on me!”
“Don’t drop your guard, if I’m taking it easy on you or not.” was all he said as he dribbled some water over the open wound. It healed instantly.
“Now you need to focus, put all of your energy into it.” he instructed.
“Ok, fine.” I mumble.
I take a swing but he deflects, I try again and again but he parries every one of them. Gods this guy is good, there’s no way he won’t win. It explains the 13 he got in the independent session. Where as I got a big fat 6.
“URG!” I scream and slump down against the wall.
“Do you need water?” he asked bringing me a glass.
“No” I sighed
He rotated his hand indicating me to continue. Suddenly I got it, I look down and examine every part of my body. Not a scratch.
“Yes! I did it!” I screeched wrapped him into a huge bear hug.
“You’re getting better” he says excitedly.
“And you’re already amazing! You have to win! Put Ares to shame!” I exclaim.
“Thank you, but I won’t go around saying that. Ares doesn’t take those kind of things lightly.” he warns.
Training with the other cabins wasn’t as fun as my secret lessons with Jeff but they did give me an excuse to talk to Casey.
“What do you want to practise today?” Casey asked grabbing my hand.
“Urm, I don’t know, climbing?” I stammer.
“Nah, how about a little swordplay?” he smirks and prods my shoulder playfully.
I pull out my sword and point it directly at his neck. He chuckles and pulls out his own sword.
Sword meets sword making a loud clash. He deflects my first few blows and just as I’m about to strike another blow I find myself swordless and lying on the ground holding my leg.
I look up and find Casey glaring down at me, the point of his sword at my eye level. i stare at it for a second and then it’s gone. I watch as it flies across the room and stabs into the dull grey wall.
“What the?” casey gasps and glares at something behind me.
“Don’t ever touch my sister, ever again.” Jeff’s voice growls.
“It’s not what you think man.” Casey says grabbing a bottle of water from a table, “We were just training.”
“Get lost” Jeff snarls and flicks his finger. the water from the bottle squirts from the bottle and right into Casey’s eyes and nose, leaving him coughing and sputtering as he walks away.
“What do you think you’re doing Riv?” Jeff ask placing his hand on my wounded leg. It came up glistening with my own scarlet blood.
“Oh gods” I whimper, the pain of the wound is starting to tingle through my nerves.
“No more public training for you, I’m training you privately from now on. And do me a favor would you? Stop hanging around with HIM” he says rumbles and jabs his thumb at Casey.
