“River Clearwater” the lady announced.
A large circle formed around me, I numbly moved towards the stage. Niall ran up and wrapped his arms around me, burying his face in my hair. I lightly kissed his cheek and pulled away from his grasp. Tears brimmed his eyes and he looked away, hoping I didn’t see.
“I don’t care if you cry.” I stated and planted a kiss right on his frowning mouth. He kissed back passionately, then the creepy lady cleared her throat into the microphone.
“You’re going to be fine, Niall. Don’t worry about me. I can do this.” I stammered. He nodded silently and stood staring at the ground.
Once I was up on the stage the lady, whom I have decided to call Ellie, called out the other person from my cabin. Just so happened he was a boy named Jeffery.
I watched as the campers from Cabin Three, Athena, get chosen.
Next was Cabin Four, The Ares Cabin.
Ellie put her hand in again. I didn’t recognize the boy, but the girls name sounded familiar.
Next was Cabin Five, Apollo’s Cabin. I prayed that Claire’s name wouldn’t get chosen.
Ellie put her hand into a big glass ball and chose out a single name.
As Claire slowly stumbled her way up onto the stage, I saw a small tear streak down the left side of her face.
“And now, for the boys!” Ellie exclaimed excitedly.
The whole camp paused to listen who was about to be chosen.
“Casey Witherspoon” she cried out.
The boy shuffled from his place and up onto stage. His piercing green eyes filled with sadness. His dark brown hair was cleanly cut and perfectly styled. Something about him drew my attention. He was attractive in a mysterious, dangerous, kind of way. He smiled at me and took his spot on the other side of Claire.
Something inside me head screamed danger and urged me to run away. But I couldn’t I just stared at him, lost in the dark abyss of his emerald eyes. I felt a prod in my ribs and somehow managed to look away. I looked over to Claire, she was giving me a look with her jaw gaped open. If looks could kill, Claire would win this thing, hands down.
“Close your mouth, Claire.” I whispered, “You’re going to catch flies.”
My attempt at lightening the mood obviously didn’t work. She shot me a glare and then gave Casey a sympathetic look. What’s going on between them? I thought she was with Josh!
Then I remembered Niall, holy poop, what kind of evil, conniving person am I? I mean, we weren’t technically dating, but Claire said it kinda went without saying. He loved me and I loved him. Although it also seems that I love Casey. This is going to be fun.
Once everyone got into place, I looked around at all of the other tributes. I silently thanked my father that Niall wasn’t there. I don’t know why, it’s not like he had ever done anything for me, and I’m not usually one to pray. But this seemed like a good time to start considering my circumstances.
We boarded the train bound for Ugana, a small island off the coast of Florida, where the capital of the United States, Charmeuse, is. That is where we are to train before going into the games. The arena itself will be at the camp, or so Ellie says.
I sat down in my room and watched the peace of Camp Half-Blood disappear out my window.
