Once my awkward math class was over, it was time for lunch. I couldn't wait to take a break from learning and just be able to sit down and talk with Claire. On my way to the lunch room, Josh had caught up with me and we walked to lunch together. I scanned the room for Claire but she was no where to be found. Josh and I took a seat at a table with a couple of people. They were a strange group, they all wore black and you couldn't see their faces underneath their hair. I was secretly hoping they would move cause they made everything a bit uncomfortable. They just sat there looking at you. Weird.
"Come on" Josh said as he tugged my arm. I jerked my arm out of his grip. I was willing to be his friend, but I didn't want to be that close yet. He didn't make a fuss, he just kept walking up to the lunch line, I followed him.
I didn't know where anything was and what to do and what not to do. I just did everything Josh did and tried to fit in. I tried looking okay with everything but on the inside, all I wanted was to go back home. Not my house, but my home. Where I grew up. Where all my best friends were. Where my best memories were made. California. My mom and dad thought it was a good idea to move to New Jersey because that's where most of our family lives. I have one little brother who's ten, I'm fourteen. He didn't really mind the move cause he's still kind of a kid and thinks moving is fun and likes meeting new people and experiencing new things. Don't get me wrong, I love making new friends and trying new things, but I'm older than him and I'm still trying to actually find myself. While I was in California, I thought I had finally found what I wanted to be... a veterinarian. I thought I had finally found my true friends... Bailey, Cara, and Tommy. Then my parents came along and were like 'Hi, were going to ruin your whole plan and life and move far, far away from everything and everyone you've ever loved!' They didn't actually break the news to me like that but in my eyes, that's how I saw it.
Anyway, that's my story about how I got to Jersey. Now back to lunch with Josh. We both got our lunch and walked back to our table we originally sat at, the people that sat there before weren't there anymore. Thank god. We sat across from each other at our empty table, just us two. Claire still hasn't showed up, I was hoping she would come quickly. I only said yes to Josh when he asked if I would sit with him cause I was going to sit with Claire also, I was thinking she would probably break the ice between Josh and I. We had some small talk and I told him that Claire was supposed to be here, eating lunch with us, right now.
"Oh, Claire? She got lunch detention today" Josh told me.
"How? What did she do? Wait, how do you know?" I asked, kind of upset. I really wanted to talk with her.
"I have math class with her. She was talking to someone, Mr. Gregson gave her a warning but that didn't stop her. She dropped her pencil and made a disruption in class and he gave her a lunch detention. It seems the detention didn't phase her the littlest bit cause she kept on distracting everyone and at one point Mr.Gregson had to tell her to shut up!" Josh said as he did an impression of Mr. Gregson.
I will admit, Josh's impression was pretty amusing and I did giggle a bit. I glanced behind Josh's head and saw Cody and his little gang of friends. That got me thinking.
"So why did you stand up for me when Cody said that?" I asked Josh curiously.
Josh paused for a second before he finally answered my question, "He was being a jerk and I could tell you were new here. This is my third year here and I know everyone, you, I didn't. I'm sure he made you feel uncomfortable and that's probably the worst feeling on your first day. I couldn't let him do that, I really liked what you said to him about breaking the rules, nice comeback."
"Thanks" I said smiling. "I don't know Cody at all, but I could sense he was a little mad at you. What are you going to do about your friendship with him?"
"What do you mean? Nothing. He only wants you to be his friend so his popularity rate spurts up. He forces you to be his friend but then he goes ahead and treats you like crap. Same with his girlfriends. He has had seven girlfriends in the past year. He only wants one thing from them, then he's onto the next one.”
I didn‘t really know anything about Cody, but somehow, I just knew what Josh was saying was true. We talked some more. I could have talked to him forever, he was just so sweet and easy to chat with. I think we covered every topic possible. We went from orange juice to Justin Bieber. We laughed a lot and he did some more impressions of the crazy teachers. He really did make me laugh, not because he was funny though, but mainly because seeing him do stupid things was just amusing. As we talked, all I could think about is how did he let himself get involved with Cody? Cody was a complete jerk and Josh was just a real easy going and fun guy. I really believe Josh and I are going to become real good friends.
