My first three classes are pretty boring. The usual Math, Science, Gym. Finally, it’s lunch time. I went and got my packed lunch out of my locker and went where Shayne and I usually lunch. Our spot is right by the huge fountain that shoots water about 10 feet high. We sat here since the first day of freshman year and have been sitting here ever since. I waited for Shayne for a minute or so before she showed up with Carly.
Carly was our other best friend. She’s only been with us since 9th grade when we had art with her and no one else would talk to her. Ever since then she has just stuck with us.
“Oh hey Carly! Hey Shayne!” I said as they sat down next to me at the table.
“So…” Shayne said.
“What Shayne?” I asked, even though I knew exactly what she was going to say next.
“You know what! What was in the box?!” She practically screamed at me. I held my left wrist out and showed them the bracelet.
“Ahhh!!!! Holy crap that is so freaking cute!!! Whatta guy!” Carly screamed as she grabbed my wrist, examining the bracelet. “What did you get him?!”
“That’s just it. I didn’t get him anything. California was a wild trip and I had ZERO time to get him anything. I need to go somewhere after school and get him something. Will you guys come with?” I asked pleadingly.
“Can’t. I’ve got soccer practice until 7 then we’re going out to eat with grandparents. Sorry,” Carly said apologetically.
“Shayne?” I pouted, giving her the puppy dog face.
“Fine, I’ll go.” She sighed.
“Thank you thank you thank you!!” I said while hugging her.
“I’m doing this for you, not him. I know how happy he makes you.”
“Shay, it’s been years since he ran into you in the halls. Plus it was an accident. Can you get over it?”
“He broke my nose! No I’m not getting over it.”
“He said sorry! But whatever I guess. I’m just happy you’re still coming.” We talked about Christmas break and what they did. About an hour later the bell rang for 4th period to get started and we headed off. Shayne and I had sign language together. It was our favorite class, not just cause we had it together though. Our teacher, Mrs. Okal, made the class so much fun. Everyone in that class was always laughing and having a good time. It was such a good class to have the last of the day. We got there right as the tardy bell rang. We sat in our seats near the back of the classroom, next to Bryson, Ty’s best friend. Also known as the guy that Shayne has been in love with since jr. high.
“Hey girls. Nice bracelet, Paysen,” Bryson said winking at me.
“Ha ha ha very funny, Brys.” I said pushing him jokingly.
“Hi Bryson,” Shayne said swooning over him.
“Hey Shayne,” he said smiling at her.
He’s so clueless about Shayne, even though she makes it so obvious.
“Stop staring, Shayne. You’re making yourself look ridiculous.” I whispered at her. She suddenly snapped out of it.
Mrs. Okal stepped in front to start class. “Alright kiddo’s, today, to be completely honest with you, I have absolutely nothing planned. So, now is your chance. If you want to learn how to say a word or phrase, go right ahead and ask me!” Everyone in class raised their hands immediately. Most of them asked about dumb words like ‘stupid’ ‘bathroom’ ‘push’ ‘make out’ and random stuff like that. Bryson raised his hand. “Yes, Bryson what do you want to know?” Mrs. Okal said.
“How do you sign ‘perfect’?” He said while looking directly at Shayne. She started blushing out of control. Bryson’s jock friends all started teasing him and punching him playfully.
“Good word Bryson! Ok everyone, make the letter ‘P’ with your hands. Now rotate both of the P-hands around each other and then come together at the end and touch fingers. Now do it with me everyone.” While practicing, Shayne and Bryson were staring right at each other. The bell rang and ruined their moment, but before we left the class, Bryson hurried and grabbed Shayne and pulled her aside.
I started gathering my books to leave class when all the sudden I feel a strong hand grabbing my arm.
“What the heck man?!” I screamed as I was struggling to pull away. I looked up and saw who was pulling me. Bryson.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you. I just wanted to talk.” Bryson said worriedly.
“Oh no no your fine. I just didn’t know what was going on for a second. What’s up?” I said putting on the biggest smile I could. I felt like such an idiot for yelling at him.
“I was just wondering if you were doing anything later tonight? I kinda wanted to hang out or something.” He seemed nervous and shy. I felt kind of bad for him. I’m not that intimidating.. Am I? I always seemed so sure of myself, but deep down I was so self conscious about everything.
“Well tonight Paysen asked me to go shopping with her, but maybe I can call you this weekend?”
“That would be so great! Here put your number in my phone and I’ll put mine in yours!” We swopped phones and I put my name in his phone as ‘Shayne :)” I know. Lame, but I didn’t want to make it too much.
“So I’ll call you then. See you later!” Bryson said while walking away.
“Ooooh. Shayne!! What was that?!” I hear Paysen shouting from across the room.
“Shut up. I’ll talk to you about it later,” I said as we walked out of the room, arm in arm.
