I got back in the car and sighed. I felt tears fill my eyes.
“What did they say?” Niall asks, grabbing my hand.
“I burnt down the whole building. There were five other rooms in that building. Ten people. I burnt down ten people’s homes. There were families in there! Children! Someone could have gotten really hurt, and it was all my fault!” The tears came out, running down my neck.
“But no one was hurt, so thank God! But, how did this happen?”
“My flat iron! I used it to curl my hair for our date but I must have forgotten to turn it off. It must have been next to a towel or something, it caught fire, the person right next door smelled smoke, called 911, everyone was evacuated.” I say, recalling what the officer told me.
“Well at least everyone is okay.”
“No but it’s not! They have nowhere to stay. I have nowhere to stay.”
We sit in silence, thinking. “Is it possible I can stay with you?” I ask Niall.
“Aw, babe I would love that, but it’s not possible.”
I look at him, frustrated. “Why not?”
“My whole family is coming down tomorrow. And when I say my whole family, I mean my whole family. My cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents. They all wanted a vacation and they want to be with me 24/7. There’s just no room. I’m going to have to share a bed with two other people. And, my family is crazy. They wouldn’t stop pestering you. I’m sorry, Emma.” He answers.
“It’s okay, I get it.” I didn’t really, though. But, in a way I was kind of relieved. Spending every second of everyday with Niall after what happened at the restaurant, would just be wrong. I look down for a few seconds, and as I do, my eyes flash to behind Niall, through the window. I think I see a flash of blonde hair.
Niall sees me staring and looks out the window too. “What are you looking at?”
“I thought I just saw Tiffany.”
“What would Tiffany be doing here?”
“I don’t know, I’m going crazy. The stress is getting to me.”
“Maybe,” Niall laughs. “But, it’s not a bad idea. Can’t you stay with Tiff?”
“No. Her parents just kicked her out of the house. She’s living in this crappy apartment above a grocery store. She’s barely making ends meet, I can’t be a burden to her.” I feel more tears come.
“Shh. Don’t cry,” he wipes my tears away with his sleeve. “Maybe you can stay with Liam.”
“Liam?” I ask.
“Yeah. He has a nice big apartment, all to himself. I sure as hell aren’t letting you stay with Harry.”
I giggle. “Oh please.” I squeeze his hand. “Do you think he would mind. I mean, he likes being alone.”
“Well, yeah, but he’ll do it for you. I’ll give him a call.”
“Thanks, Niall.” I smile and he pulls out his phone. I hear the phone ring and listen as Niall explains what happened to Liam.
“Aw, yeah of course she can stay with me.” I hear Liam’s deep voice say through the phone.
“Thanks man. We’ll be there in about ten minutes.” He hangs up.
“But, Niall. I have no clothes or anything.”
“Go shopping tomorrow.”
“I kind of need money for that. And I don’t have any.”
“Here,” He says handing me his wallet with all his credit cards in it.
“Niall! I can’t use this!”
“Yes you can,” he laughs. “I have plenty, it’s fine.”
“You don’t owe me this.” I say, shaking my head.
“I invited you on the date. If I hadn’t, you wouldn’t have curled your hair and then there would have been no fire.” He answers.
“I made you take me out, instead of watching a movie.” I fire back.
“Just shut up and take the money.”
I laugh. “Thanks Niall.”
We get to Liam’s place and he opens the door for us.
“Hey!” he says hugging us.
“Hi.” I mumble.
“You look exhausted.” Liam laughs.
“Go to sleep. Your room is the first up the stairs to the left.”
“Thanks Liam.” I hug him. I was thanking a lot of people today.
“Goodnight Niall.” I kiss him and give him a hug.
He whispers in my ear, “Love you, Emma.”
“Love you too.”
Shit. I did it again.
I run up the stairs and am about to enter my room when I decide to listen to Liam and Niall’s conversation.
“No need to worry. I’ll take care of her.” Liam says.
“Thank you. But if you do anything, I swear-“
“Niall, I have a girlfriend! I’m not Harry for crying out loud!”
It goes silent. “Good, I’m trusting you, man.”
“And you can. Have fun with your family.” Liam says, and I hear the door shut and lock.
