Virtual Reality

Hey. I'm Tabby. I'm 16.
I guess you could call me the average teenager.
Gossiper, loves guys, and addicted to the internet.
Too addicted.

Tabby spends her life on the computer, and she knows it. So when she comes across a new virtual world "Palm City", she doesn't hesitate to join. But this world seems more real than ever, and teens all over the world are going missing a couple days after the website is created. Is there something more to Palm City than just a website? Is virtuality becoming reality?

7. A Gem in the Rough

Chapter 7- A Gem in the Rough

I look up to the misshapen clouds, a chicken tikka wrap in one hand, and a book in the other. Leah shakes me hard. "Oh God, Tabz, you're not daydreaming are you?" she laughs and shakes her head. Then all of a sudden, Kev approaches me, one hand in his messy blonde hair, the other shoved in his pocket. Leah quickly flicks open her pocket mirror, admires bother sides of her face, rubs off an imaginary bit of make up gone wrong on her cheekbone, flicks the mirror away and tries to look effortlessly beautiful. She pretends to not notice his presence, and flicks her hair, and flutters her lashes whilst looking up into the heavens. Kev doesn't even look at her. "Hey Tabby," he says with a casual grin. Leah pretends to get a pleasent surprise when he speaks, and I can see the anger in her eyes when he doesn't give her a hello. The pale brown irisis flickers up in flames. Kev sits down on the bench next to me, then re-ties his tie, making it low and chunky. I can never quite get mine like that. "Um, hi," I say, putting the nibbled at chicken tikka wrap in my bag, and put the book down beside me. He looks into my eyes like he's trying to work something out. I feel like I've seen him before. Other then school. Then it clicks. He's one of the guys that Gemma flirted with on Palm City! Ahhh. "Hey! with you on Palm City! I thought I saw you somewhere!". I can almost here the tick of realisation inside his head and he nods. "Oh yeah. Man I love that site." He looks around the courtyard. "Practically everybody here's on it, mate. It would be real damn hard to find a kid who doesn't like Palm City. It kinda reminds me of home."

"Australia?" I ask. He nods and leans forward, and clicks open a diet coke can. "A part from there's no waves. I can't surf in that calm water, mate!" His accent is so darn cute! It gives me little butterflies. Then his phone rings. It's a quote off Family Guy, and I can't help smiling. "Love it!" I say. He winks, then answers his phone. "Oh hey Randy! You havin' fun without me? Hahaha....oh totally. Yeah that would be so awesome....really? The championships? Wow, mate, you gotta go for it...of course I'll come! Yeah, so what, it's boring round here anyway." I feel so sunken at that part. "Hey but you gotta come visit me too. The weekend? Yeah sure. Wait don't go! Check out Palm City. A-maze-ing! Oh you're on? Great, well see y' later, mate." He pushes end on his iPhone, then shoves it in his pocket. I look at Leah who's still trying to look hot, even though she's been completely ignored.

I click on Palm City and I'm in my now-decorated room. I put on something nice, then open my door to face the city. That unsettling smell again. I strut out, then sit by Cafe Coco for about half an hour, just looking. Guitar guy's there, playing and singing. I give him a couple of coins, I mean, he is great. Then I see Kev. I'm about wave and yell for him when Gemma trots over squeals, and he scoops her up and gives her a long lingering kiss. My heart shatters, and it's then that I realise how much I've fallen for Kev. Gemma looks over and gives me such an irritating nasty wink that makes me want to fire aim at her with ten thousand machine guns. I run off to my forest spot and sit there with tears spilling out my crystal eyes.
