Harry opened the door for me and we walked into a little Italian place called France Manca. It smelt like a piece of heaven fell from the sky and landed right here, into this little resurant. "I hope you don't mind that we didn't go anywhere fancy. I just wanted to get to know you without getting mobbed by the pap."
I felt bad. Had I really been treating Harry so coldly? "This place is fine. Quite adorable actually."
He smilied in reply and went to the hostess stand to get us a tabel. I guess the reason for me being so cold to him is because the life of a gymnast is a lonely one, especially one that's on an Olympic Team. Sure, your on a 'team' with member and such that root for you and you to them, but at the end of the day, you're still competing against them and you're the one that's wants to be standing on that gold metal winning platform. Not the silver, not the bronze. The gold.
I never had a family who was ever really there for me either, so it just made my loneliness turn into sadness which turned into self discipline which then progressed into me becoming the serious and straight faced woman I am today. Tabloids say I'm dull and too focused for someone of my age. I say I'm serious about what I do and I know that if I push myself, I can do it.
"Okay, your table is ready. Right this way, please." The hostess had come back over to us. I hadn't even noticed Harry return to me. I looked over to him and shot him a friendly smile, something that wasn't often of me to do, and he smilied back. Even blushed a little. "Your waitress today will be Nick and he will be over soon to take your orders and drinks."
Harry and I both thanked the girl and I watched her as she walked back to her podium at the front of the resturant. Harry cleared his throat. "So... Um... Would I be prying too much if I asked about this incident that happened at the gym which caused you to be in this situation?"
"Not at all," I said, looking down to my lap. I was ashamed at the story that I was about to relive. I could've prevented it, had I been paying attention. "Well, it was about seven months ago now. They told me I had a two month recovery after I left the hospital. I was there for roughly five months. I was working on my routine for the Olympic trails and I had an Arabian move in my balance beam routine. Do you know what that is?" He nodded in reply. "Well, balance beam is most deffinetly my stongest routine. I wasn't paying attention, off in Rue-Land as Grettea would say. I was standing at the end of the beam and getting ready to do it. One of the other girls had called my name once I jumped and I looked over at her right as I was in mid air and somehow managed to fall out of my pose and fall to the beam with my stomach to the air and the beam caught my back, nearly breaking it. I had some broken ribs and a twisted wrist and a severly bruised spine. It could have been worse, I suppose. I could have broken my back and never be able to come back. That was the worst moment of my life. The gym is my home, and to be carried away on a stretcher is one of the worst feelings I've ever had to endure."
I had finished my story and finally looked up to see Harry staring deeply into my eyes. I don't know why I had told him this story so early on, I mean, this is one of our first conversations. Harry put his hands on the table and stood up. I thought he was about to walk out when he came and sat next to me and just hugged me. It took me by surprise, I'm not use to physical contact like this, but soon enough I had my arms wrapped around his wait and he had his around my shoulders. I suppose it's nice to just have a 'hug session' every once in a while.
Harry held me like that for a while, not letting go until the waitor had taken our order and left. When he did let go he didn't move back to his seat. He stayed with me. "Thanks for that... I didn't realise that I needed one of those so badly."
"It's no problem... Everyone needs a hug sometimes."
I nodded my head and turned back to face the front. We sat in a comfortable silence until our food came to the table, both of us had our feet propped up to be resting on the bench on the other side of the table. The food we ordered was so amazing! When we finished, Harry had paid and we were heading back to the car, once again, hand in hand, to go and see a movie.
