2. Halfway there

Sunlight beamed onto Marley's sleeping face as the dawn of a new day began to break. Marley awoke slowly and silently, for once feeling content and at peace. He took a long drink from the waterhole and then looked up in the tree of the eagle.

There was no sign of the eagle and for some days, Marley waited under that tree for the eagle to return but no one came. A while after, Marley set off for the small mountain. He needed to get to the top for a better view of this desert; if he could do that, he might be able to plot his exit.

It took four days just to get halfway. The mountain was twice as tall as he thought it was and the rocks were so jagged and sharp, just placing your hands on them would make them bleed. Marley was so close to the top, just a few more days, he thought, and he'd be there.

As Marley settled down in a small crevice on the mountain, he head a low chirp from above. He scrambled up, drawing his penknife from his pocket to protect himself as he advanced to the source of the sound.

From a small aperture, came the same noise and as Marley peered in closer, he saw the eagle that had lead him, cowering in that hole. It looked so different, it's feathers had transformed to a black and brown concoction, it's head was now pure white and it's dull beak was turning a bright yellow colour.

Marley couldn't help but smile at the little creature. Sunlight beamed onto Marley's sleeping face as the dawn of a new day began to break. Marley awoke slowly and silently, for once feeling content and at peace. He took a long drink from the waterhole and then looked up in the tree of the eagle.

The eagle had transformed in front of him and as the eagle renewed it's own strength, slowly, Marley felt his own strength renewed as well.
