The nurse screamed when she walked in. I suppose she thought we were doing something, which was rude to assume, as she turned bright red. I laughed and sat up.
"Oh, you're awake!" she exclaimed, now regaining her composure. She quickly moved to the computer to run some tests. "From what I can see," she said, looking intently at the screen, "your wounds have surprisingly healed faster than most. You should be given admittance to leave at 4pm this evening." She turned and smiled at me.
I gestured to Hallie sleeping on my lap. "And when does she leave?"
"Whenever she wants. She was clear to go yesterday, but her mother had her stay another night." The nurse said before she turned towards the door. Then, second guessing her decision to leave, she whipped back around. "I'm sorry, but I'm such a huge fan. Can I get your autograph?" She asked excitedly, breaking out into super-fan mode.
I nodded and laughed. "Absolutely." She handed me a poster of me and the boys and a sharpie. "So, uh, how long have you been waiting to ask me this?" I said, debating where to sign the poster.
She turned a shade of red. "Since they wheeled you in," she admitted, embarrassed.
I laughed again. "What's your name? After all the work you've done for the past few weeks, I think I should make this personalized as a way of thanks."
She smiled broadly. "I'm Elle."
"Well, it's great to meet you Elle." I finished signing the poster and handed it back to her.
"Thanks so much, Mr. Styles!" She said, practically skipping out of the room.
"Call me Harry." I said as Hallie's eyes fluttered open.
"Morning, beautiful." I said and kissed her forehead gently. She smiled and her hand rested on my cheek. I moved my hand to cover hers.
"I should say the same to you." Her hair was a mess from sleeping, but I wouldn't dare bring that up to her. Instead, I tucked a stray lock behind her ears.
"So what time do we ditch this Popsicle stand? I've seriously been craving coffee ever since we got here." Her eyes twinkled and made my heart go a mile a minute.
At first I forgot what to say. "Uh, um... Oh! Right. The nurse said this morning you can leave whenever, but I don't have clearance to go until 4pm."
She frowned. "What are we gonna do till four?"
"We could..." I paused. I honestly didn't know what to do until four. Then an idea hit me.
"Would you be interested in playing a game with me?" I asked, trying to sound intriguing.
"What kind of game?" She asked, her eyebrows raised.
"A board game." I paused, "For those of us who are bored." Then I smiled the cheekiest smile I could manage.
She hit my arm. "That was terrible."
"I know," I said, still smiling. "So are you up for it?"
She propped her head up with her elbows. "Which board game? I can only make my decision with vital information."
Laughing at her, I pulled out Trouble. "How about this one?"
Immediately, all the emotion drained from her face. She sat motionless.
"What's wrong?" I asked, concerned.
"Nothing, it's just my sister and I used to play this game with my dad." She tried to manage a smile.
"We can play a different game," I said, starting to put it back.
She grabbed my wrist. "No. I want to make new memories of this game. With you." She started to set it up.
I smiled at her. She was my one and only. She was perfect. And I knew, that I didn't and couldn't love anyone more than her. "I love you," The words tumbled out before I could stop them. Yet, it wasn't much of a regret.
She froze and turned to look at me. Then she had my face in her hands. She kissed me, passionately and lovingly. She pulled away a centimeter and whispered into my mouth, "I love you more than you can ever imagine."
So I kissed her again.
NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR:
So I received an amazing question in my email yesterday. Someone asked me, "If you could cast anyone in the roles of Janie and Hallie, who would you cast?" Honestly, I hadn't thought about it until now. So I did some research and found some people. Here are the results:
I cast Lily Collins as Hallie Thomas. Lily is so perfect.
And I cast Jessica Stroup as Janie.
Tell me what you think of my casting, or send me more questions at firstname.lastname@example.org. I will answer all of them. And don't forget about the character contest! Yay guys! Thanks for viewing!
