The moment we stepped into the cabin, we knew something was wrong. It was silent, eerily silent. Everything looked exactly as we had left it, not a speck of dirt to be seen. Hallie and I exchanged confused glances.
"What do you think is going on here?" She asked, her puzzled expression made her eyebrows furrow. It was cute.
I shook my head.
"Well--" Hallie started, but I cut her off, placing my palm over her mouth.
"Wait," I whispered, "Did you hear that?"
She shook her head and slowly pried my hand off of her mouth.
Then a bright glow emerged from the darkness surrounding us. We both looked at each other before tiptoeing down the hallway.
"Louis!" Eleanor's distinct voice hissed. "I think they're home!" Her voice ricocheted off the walls of the disturbingly soundless house.
Hallie pointed to the spare bedroom. I nodded, the voices were most definitely coming from there.
Just as Hallie was about to turn the door knob and thrust the door open, a wild Danielle came running out of the room, making us all jump back in surprise.
"You're home!" She shrieked, the house echoing her cry. She turned back to the room and called in, "All systems are go!"
There were some crashes and what sounded like someone falling hard to the ground. Danielle flashed us a smile.
"Dani, what's going on?" Hallie asked, trying to peer into the room. Danielle quickly noticed her aim and swung the door shut. Hallie, defeated, took a small step back.
Then someone stuck their hand out making the thumbs-up sign. Danielle nodded and faced us again. Her bright smile reappeared. "Hallie, you go back to your room, and Harry you go to Louis' room." She gave us no more direction before heading back into the spare bedroom.
Hallie shrugged and headed in the direction of our bedroom. I waved before turning down a skinny hallway and heading into Louis and El's room.
Startled, I jumped back when I saw Zayn reclined back in one of the leather chairs by the balcony. Wait, Lou and El had a balcony?" I shook my head, remembering the house elevated upward as the rooms went along. Lou and El must have had the highest room.
Suddenly, Zayn leaped up from the chair to face me. I started again, then gained back my composure.
"So, what am I doing here?" I asked Zayn, taking a seat on the bed.
Zayn yelped, shooing me up. He carefully examined the black, obviously freshly ironed suit laying nicely on the bed.
"You could've wrinkled it!" He scolded. I rolled my eyes. Please, from all the plastic bags covering that thing, I don't think the wrinkle would have made it past the first layer.
He tenderly handed it to me. "Be careful not to ruin it," He said slowly, as if I was a child being told not to break a porcelain doll. "Go and change."
I stared at him. I was putting this on? "For what?" I questioned.
He just glared at me. "Just do it!"
Not wanting to start trouble with Zayn, I trudged to the bathroom. I carefully buttoned up the white dress shirt and pulled the jacket over it. Trying to make it more my style, I rolled up the jacket and folded the cuffs of the dress shirt over it. Ah, much better.
Pleased, I walked out of the bathroom. Zayn just stood there in shock.
"You, you wrinkled it." He sputtered.
I walked over to him. "It's okay, mate, it looks better this way." I patted his shoulder before exiting the room. I could still see his mouth wide open even though I had left.
I turned back into the main hallway nearly crashing into Hallie. I looked her up and down. She had her hair in a fancy updo and she wore a floorlength lipstick red dress. It was strapless and had sequins that looked like drops of falling rain decorating the front. I gaped at her.
"Harry," She said pulling my chin up to look at her. "Take a picture, it'll last longer." I smiled cheekily at her before leaning in for a kiss.
Then Danielle was in between us, pushing us away. I shot her a look and she just smiled back. "I see you found your outfits," She examined us both. "Did the designated stylists help you?"
"You mean Zayn?" I asked.
"And Perrie?" Hallie added.
Danielle gaped at us. "The stylists."
I shook my head. "Whatever you want to call them, Dani."
She smiled at me again. "All ready?"
"You still haven't told us for what yet! Why are we are dressed up?" I asked, hoping to spill an answer out of her. I glanced at Hallie. She was uneasily shifting from foot to foot. I grabbed her hand and immediately she stood still. Her smile was so dazzling, I forgot Danielle was still talking to us.
"So let's go!" She finished, dragging us both into the room.
Inside, a small rounded table sat in the middle of the room. It was covered elegantly with a black tablecloth. As a centerpiece, a bouquet of red roses sat in a crystal vase. There were two small candles lit on either side of the roses. On one wall, Liam, Louis and Niall stood almost statue-like. They wore white dress shirts, black tuxedo vests and matching pants. In front of them they held shining silver platters. Soft music played in the background, romantic music. I glanced at Hallie to see her reaction to the room.
She had a hand covering her mouth as she attempted to take everything in. I grabbed her hand and squeezed it. She removed her hand from her face and smiled sweetly at me.
"Aren't you guys gonna sit?" Eleanor nudged us towards the table. I moved quickly to one of the chairs and pulled it out for Hallie.
She giggled and pecked me softly on the lips. "Why thank you."
I smiled, silently wishing the kiss hadn't been so short. How I longed to have her press her lips against mine again... My thoughts drifted.
Then, returning to reality, I took my seat on the other side of the small table. Eleanor was at our table in a second. She placed some fancy looking menus on our table. I opened the pamphlet, expecting fancy cuisine to be inside a fancy cover. I assumed wrong. Hallie giggled softly, and I realized she must have been reading the same thing I was. The main entrees consisted of: Chicken Fingers, Pizza Bagels, Cereal (the expensive kind), and my favorite: Fettuccine Alfredo. It seemed utterly wrong to be on the same list with the cheap foods, but the lads knew me by now. I was a sucker for Italian.
Hallie set her menu down. "Are you going to tell us what this is all about, El? Or will I have to pry it out of you?"
Eleanor bit her lip. "Well," On the wall, the boys had moved from their statue positions and were furiously gesturing 'No.' I laughed and they immediately returned to being still. It was weird seeing them act so mature.
Nellie came bursting through the door. "Did you finish the 'perfect first date' yet?" She said 'perfect first date' with air quotes. She froze when she saw us sitting at the table.
"Wait," I started, "is this an attempt to give us the first date we haven't had yet?" Realization finally struck me. The dinner table, the music, the outfits, the Italian. I had never taken Hallie on our first date. Everyone looked at me, awaiting my response. Hallie blushed furiously behind the menu she had picked up again.
"It's marvelous." Hallie said, still using the menu as a mask. I leaned over the table and pulled it away from her face.
"I couldn't agree with you more." I whispered. All around us, sounds of relief escaped our servers for tonight's mouths.
"So what will we be getting you two tonight?" Eleanor asked, smiling a smile almost as large as Danielle.
In unison we responded, "Fettuccine Alfredo." I smiled at her. I hadn't known she had a soft spot for Italian. Something we could've learned on our first date. Mentally, I face-palmed myself.
El glanced at both of us before scribbling on a scrap sheet of paper. "Be right out."
Niall came over and placed a glass of water in front of each of us. Then he walked over to me and whispered, "The boys didn't feel safe serving anything that might make you a little--" He hobbled away, stumbling and tripping. I stifled a laugh, it was probably better I didn't consume alcohol in front of Hallie. Who knows what would've happened?
I then turned to face her and saw her eyes wide open. Obviously she had heard Niall's comment. Damn it, the Irish can't whisper! I mentally cursed him.
Liam then walked over to our table, the only table in the room, and placed down our food. "There you are." He winked at me and then they all left the room.
Hallie smiled at me and began to eat her food. Suddenly my heart started pounding. I was getting nervous. Why was I getting nervous?
I also began to eat my food and we sat in silence for a little while. I opened my mouth to speak, but Hallie beat me to it.
"This is really nice," Her voice was sincere. "Everything they've done for us."
I nodded. "Yeah, it's brilliant."
We then ate the remnants of our Italian cuisine in silence. Niall's head popped out from the door and he made an exasperated noise. He made a run for the stereo in the corner of the room and hit a few buttons. Almost immediately, "Moments" came on.
I stood up slowly, my heart still was beating out of my chest, and walked to stand next to Hallie, still seated.
"May I have this dance?" I asked, holding out my hand.
She took it and pulled herself up so we were inches apart. I closed the distance and made our noses touch. She giggled slightly, and I pecked her on the lips and we started to sway.
"I have a confession," she started and looked away from me.
I turned her chin with my thumb. "What is it?"
"Well, when Janie," She almost choked on the name. I knew how upset she'd been after the nightmare, and I just hoped we would be getting news soon. Good news. "When she first told me about you guys, I thought you would be vain and conceited." She paused. "And judgemental."
I frowned at her. "What drove you to think that?"
She looked away from me again. "My books."
"Ah," I paused. "What do you think now?"
She wrapped her arms tighter around my neck and twisted one of my curls around her finger. "That I was so wrong." She laid her head on my chest.
It was then I realized the song was over and had been for quite some time. Everyone's faces popped in from the door. I looked at them but just as soon as I had saw them, they were gone. I shook my head and turned my attention back to Hallie. She yawned and closed her eyes.
"Tired?" I whispered into her ear.
She nodded. I scooped her up bridal-style, her eyes still closed, and carried her back to our room. I laid her on the bed and went into the bathroom to change.
"Don't come back just yet, Harry." She called from the bedroom and the shuffling noises I was hearing signified she was changing.
I chuckled and called back, "Shame."
She laughed as I pulled on my plaid pajama pants and a white v-neck. "All clear?" I asked, not waiting for a response, and opened the door anyway.
She was lying on the bed with a book in her hands. She wore the big nerdy-style glasses. They looked amazing on her. I flopped down on the bed, and laid next to her.
"Whatcha readin'?" I asked, and laid my head on her shoulder. She turned to me and sighed, placing her bookmark in the book and setting it on the side table.
"Can you believe tomorrow is our last night here?" She asked, turning now so she had her back to me.
I wrapped my arms around her and rested my chin on the top of her head. "I'll miss it here."
She sighed in agreement and pulled her feet up to her chest. "This was amazing. Tonight, everything. I couldn't have asked for a better first date." She paused for a moment. "Or a better boyfriend."
I played with her hair inbetween my fingers. Then I rested my head on the pillow. Smiling to myself I responded, "I love you."
"I love you more."
"Don't ever," I said quickly pulling her into a tight hug, "doubt me again." I finished and tickled her. She laughed so hard her breath came in long breaks. I stopped and we both flopped back on the pillows.
"G'night, Harry." She said pulling the covers up to her chin. She removed her glasses and placed them on top of her book. Then she shut off the light.
"G'night, Hal." I responded, and then I was submerged into darkness. But I was sure I was smiling.
