Gotta Be You

I know how they both feel and now all that’s left to do is to find out how I feel.

And right now, my heart is stuck in the middle of a tug-o-war. Niall pulling hard on one side and Harry pulling just as hard on the other.

55. Surprise

Isla’s POV

“Babe, what do you want to do for your birthday next week?” I asked. I tried to sound nonchalant and kept my eyes on my laptop in case I’d give the surprise away.

He shrugged as he kept his eyes on the football game on the TV while stuffing his face with popcorn. “I don’t know. Maybe just have a small party.” He looked over at me and I couldn’t help but look back at him as he smiled at me. “And maybe spend the day with you before the party?”

I couldn’t help the smile that grew on my face. “I would love that.”

He gave me one more smile before turning back to the TV. My plan was going perfectly. Now, Niall thought that we would be celebrating his birthday next weekend. Little did he know that tonight, we were having his surprise party. I would take Niall out for dinner tonight while the guys and their girlfriends get the party ready at our place.

Yes, I moved back with Niall. And it was the perfect way to reconnect with him. It’s been a week since we left the hospital and we’ve spent practically every minute together. He’s taken me out on a date every night and it felt like it was our first dates. I got butterflies every time he’d pretend to “pick me up” for our date, where he would knock on our front door and hand me a bouquet of flowers.

It was perfect.

He was perfect.

“We should get ready soon. Our reservation is at 5:00.”

“Okay. The game’s almost done.”

I turned off my laptop before getting up and going to our bedroom to start getting ready. We usually go out for dinner at 7:00 but because of the party, we had to get back earlier.

I put on my makeup and put my hair in loose curls before going over to my closet to pick out my outfit. I was dressing for dinner but I would also be dressing for the party so I chose a little black dress with an open back and thin straps that crossed over to the bottom of my back. I matched the dress with a pair of simple black stiletto pumps. I started putting on my earrings and as I was putting on the second one, Niall came into the bedroom and did a double take when he looked over at me on the way to the closet.

“Wow, you look amazing.”

I smiled at him. “Thanks.” I walked over to the dresser and grabbed my perfume before spritzing myself a couple of times.

I thought Niall had gone into the closet to get dressed so I jumped when I felt a pair of hands wrap around my waist.

“Niall, you scared me.”

I tried to spin around to face him but he wrapped his arms tighter, keeping me in place. He placed his lips on my neck as he pulled me closer to him.

“N-Niall, go get ready. We…have to leave soon,” I breathed. I tried really hard to resist him but I was failing.

“Niall.” I turned my head towards him as he finally pulled back. “We have to--”

He interrupted me with a kiss as he loosened his grip around my waist, allowing me to finally face him. He pushed me slightly until I felt my back hit the dresser. I wrapped my arms around his neck as his rested on my hips. I pulled back once I was able to maintain a tiny bit of control but Niall only moved his lips over to my neck.

“Niall,” I gasped. “We…have to…go.”

“Just 5 more minutes,” he said against my skin.

“You’re gonna mess up my hair and makeup.”

“Just do it again.” His lips never left my neck.

“Do you know how long it took me to get ready?” I laughed. “I won’t have time to do it again.”

“Then I won’t mess up your hair and makeup. There are other things we can do.”

I thought over what he meant and finally understood as I felt one of his hands trail under my skirt.

“Niall, no.”

His hands moved up to the hem of my panties before his fingers started slipping into them.

I quickly placed my hand around his wrist to stop him.

“Niall. We really have to go or we’ll lose our reservation.”

It was the truth but I really just needed us to leave since the guys and girls would be here soon to start getting ready. I told them that we were going to leave at 4:45 and it was now 4:20 and Niall still had to get ready. He groaned as he slowly pulled away. He playfully frowned at me as I looked at him with an amused smile.

“It’s just…you look so great. Especially in that dress. I just want to rip it off of you.”

“Don’t worry. We can continue this later.” I winked at him and gave him a peck on the lips before turning him around and shoving him towards the closet.

“Now go get ready.”

“Yes, sir.” He opened the closet door before pulling out a pair of dark pants and a white button up shirt and topping it with a dark blue blazer. I sat on the edge of the bed and pulled out my phone as I waited for him to get dressed. He fixed his hair and put on some cologne before he walked over to me and placed his arms on either side of me and leaning forwards. I put my phone away and looked up at him.

“Are you ready?” I asked. I gave him a short kiss as he smile at me.

“Yes…I…am,” he replied, giving me a kiss in between each word before finishing off with a long, sweet kiss.

We pulled away and he stuck his hand out to me. I grabbed it and he pulled me up before I grabbed my clutch and we walked out towards the front door.

He held my hand all the way to the car until he had to let got to open the passenger door for me. I hopped in before he closed it and walked over to the driver’s side. He drove to the restaurant and about halfway there, I pulled out my phone and texted El that they were able to start getting ready. I gave her my key so that they would be able to get in. She replied and said that they would start heading over soon.

I put my phone away as we just pulled into the restaurant parking lot. Niall opened my door for me and we walked hand-in-hand into the restaurant and on our way to our table. We sat down and looked at the menu after our waiter took our drink order.

The rest of the date went perfectly. Me and Niall started doing this thing where we would order each other’s food so that we could try something new every time. I knew what Niall liked so he always liked what I ordered him. I wasn’t a picky eater and I loved trying new things so I always enjoyed the food he ordered me as well. Throughout dinner, we talked about anything and everything. He told me about a new song that he was in the middle of writing and that he wanted me to hear it once he was finished.

“What’s it about?”

“It’s a surprise.”

I pouted as he continued to smile at me. “Fine.”

“You’ll hear it soon. And you’ll be the first one to hear it.”

I couldn’t resist the smile that replaced my frown. “Okay.”

I was about to take another bite of my dessert when I got a new text message from El.

*We’re all ready. Come over when you guys are finished.*

I quickly sent a reply.

*We’re just finishing dessert. We’ll come right after.*

*Okay. Text me when you’re almost here.*

*I will :) *

I put my phone away before quickly finishing my dessert. I looked over at Niall and saw that he was already finished.

“Shall we go?” I asked as I waved over to our waiter.

“Why are you in such a hurry?” he asked, an amused expression on his face.

“I’m kind of tired.” I lied.

He smirked at me. “You just want to go home so we can continue what we were doing before we left."

“What?! No!” I felt my cheeks reddening when our waiter came over.

I cleared my throat. “Um, we’ll have the check, please.”

He nodded before turning around and walking away.

I tried avoiding Niall’s gaze but was unsuccessful as my eyes drifted to his. He was still smirking at me and my cheeks were still red.

I rolled my eyes at him and smiled. “Niall, stop it.”

“Stop what? I’m not doing anything.” He put on an innocent expression as the waiter came over and placed our bill on the table before walking away. I was about to grab it but Niall beat me to it.

“Niall! I’m paying this time. You paid last night.”

“So? I want to pay again.”

“Isla,” he mocked.

I slumped in defeat as Niall placed his credit card in the little leather book. Our waiter came over and grabbed it before walking over to the register.

“Thank you,” I said.

“Don’t worry about it.” He gave me a smile.

The waiter came back with Niall’s card and receipt and Niall signed it and left the tip. We got up and Niall grabbed his blazer that he had taken off and he grabbed my hand and we headed out of the restaurant. Once we got outside, he took his blazer and held it open for me. I quickly slipped it on before Niall took my hand in his again. We walked over to the car and we got in before Niall started driving home. I took out my phone and sent El a quick text saying that we were on our way home.

We finally arrived to our place, nothing seeming out of place. I had told El to let everyone know to park away from our house so that Niall wouldn’t see it. We parked in the driveway and we got out before we headed to the door. Niall unlocked the door before he opened it and walked in. He flicked the lights on and even I got scared once everyone jumped out and yelled “surprise.”

“SURPRISE!!!” A million voiced screamed out at Niall.

He jumped back as we watched everyone walk over to us.

“Holy crap! You guys scared the shit out of me.” He placed his hand on top of his heart. “What’s the surprise for?”

“Well, we wanted to throw you a surprise party for your birthday but we thought that it would be a better surprise to had it a week early,” Harry said.

“Well, I definitely am surprised,” Niall smiled. He looked over to me. “Did you plan this?”

I nodded before he walked over to me. He pulled me into his arms and gave me a kiss.

“Thank you. This was very sweet.” He gave me another kiss.

“Awwwwwww,” everyone chorused.

I rolled my eyes before pulling away.

Niall turned to the boys and gave them a hug and then went around and hugged every other guest.

“We pulled off this party quite well,” Harry said as he placed his arm around my shoulder and looked over at party.

“What do you mean ‘we’?” I laughed. “Me and El basically planned this whole party.”

He pretended to be offended as he pulled back and looked at me. “Excuse me? Who was the one that sent out the invitations? Last time I checked, people don’t go to parties unless they get an invitation. Invitations are the most important thing about parties.”

I rolled my eyes at him before laughing. “Okay, Harry. I’m sorry. We couldn’t have done this without you,” I said, sarcasm filling my tone.

He grinned at me before poking me in the stomach, which I retaliated with a light punch to his arm.

“Oh, don’t be a baby.”

Suddenly, Niall came over and put his arm around Harry.

“Is Isla bothering you?” he asked Harry.

“Yes. She’s hurting me.”

Niall turned to me. “Isla, none of that here or I’m gonna have to ask you to leave.”

I scoffed as I looked between the two boys before I crossed my arms.

“Fine,” I said, flicking my head up and walking away.

“Aw, you know we’re just teasing, babe.” Before I even took two steps, Niall grabbed my arm and turned me around. I frowned up at him, keeping my arms crossed.

“I'm sorry,” he said.

I couldn’t even pretend to be mad at him as a smile crept on my face.

“You’re forgiven,” I teased, as I playfully nudged him with my shoulder.

“I’m sorry, too,” Harry said, as he appeared beside Niall.

I smirked as I got an idea.

“Get on your knees and beg for my forgiveness, Styles.”

His eyes opened wide and his smirk quickly disappeared.

“Are…are you serious?”

“Mhmm,” I said with a nod.

“Niall, tell her not to make me do this.”

“You know better than to mess with Isla,” Niall said, a huge grin plastered on his face.

Just then, the boys, El, Perrie and Dani came over.

“Perfect. You guys are going to witness something amazing,” I said.

Harry looked like he was about to throw up before he looked up at me.

“Please don’t make me do this. I’m sorry. I promise not to mess with you again. And how come Niall doesn’t have to do this?”

“Because, it’s his birthday.”

“His birthday’s next week!”

“Just do it already, Styles,” I said.

He grumbled something I couldn’t catch before he quickly dropped down to his knees and clasped his hands in front of him.

The guys immediately started laughing at him.

“Isla, I’m sorry for messing with you,” he said quickly. He looked around the room to see if anyone was watching. Luckily for him, no one noticed.

Except us.

Liam didn’t waste any time and took out his phone to take a picture of this sight before us.

I tortured him even longer as I placed my finger on my chin and pretended to be thinking it over. He was getting antsy as he frantically looked around the room.

“Please, Isla,” he exclaimed.

“Fine, you’re forgiven.”

He groaned again as he quickly got up and dusted off his pants.

“You are an evil woman,” he said while shaking his head.

I laughed along with everyone while Niall put his arm around me shoulder and took a drink of his beer.

“I’m gonna go get a drink,” Harry grumbled before he walked off.

I felt kind of bad but either I’d make it to him or he’d most likely get over it.

“Cake time!” El said. She walked into the kitchen and came back a minute later with a cake in her hands that had a set of candles lit up.

“I think we should do it in the backyard,” Harry said, appearing from behind El.

I looked at him with confusion. “Why?”

“It’s beautiful outside. It’ll be perfect for when we sing.” A hint of a smirk played on his face but I didn’t even want to bother figuring it out.

“Okay, then. Let’s go to the backyard.”

We all headed out and El placed the cake on the table in the patio. We sang ‘Happy Birthday’ before Niall made a wish and blew out the candles. He cut up the cake and passed it around to everyone before handing the last piece to me and getting one for himself. I was about to take a bite before a hand shot out and shoved the cake in my face.

I gasped as I felt the cake slide off of my face. I looked over at the person who did it and rested my eyes on Harry who was now laughing his head off, his eyes shut tight and dimples showing.

So this is why Harry wanted to have the cake outside.

Everyone was watching in amusement as I grabbed the cake that had fallen off of my face and walked over to a still laughing Harry before wiping it across his face.

His laugh quickly died the second the cake landed on his face.

“Oops, sorry. My hand slipped.”

He wiped the cake off of his face before he looked at it and then over to me. I immediately started walking backwards as Harry started coming towards me. I felt my back hit Niall and I quickly walked behind him, using him as a shield.

“Niall, if you don’t want cake on you, I suggest you move.”

“If you do--”

Niall was interrupted by a cake flying to his face. But it wasn’t from Harry, it was from Louis.

“Happy birthday, Niall!” Louis shouted.

“Food fight!” Liam exclaimed. Not a second passed by before cake started flying everywhere. I quickly ran for cover behind the loveseat and found El hiding there already.

“This is gonna be a pain to clean up!” I said over the shouts from the food fight.

She laughed. “Good luck with that.”

Suddenly, Harry and Louis appeared behind us holding a piece of mushed up cake in their hands.

“We surrender,” El said, holding her hands up.

“Doesn’t work that way for cake fights, babe,” Louis said. And with that, he walked up to El and smeared the cake on her face.

She squealed before wiping the cake off of her face. She looked up at him before he quickly ran away, El running after him.

I slowly turned my eyes onto Harry, who was still standing in front of me, cake in hand, a devious smile on his face.

“Any last words,” he said.

“Yes, actually,” I said, smirking back at him. “You always gotta watch your back in cake fights.”

Before he could figure out what I meant, Niall, Zayn and Liam surrounded Harry and each splattered a piece of cake on his head.

I laughed along with the boys as we watched Harry shake the cake out of his hair.

“I thought you were on my side!” Harry exclaimed.

Niall walked over to me and placed his arm around my shoulder.

“Always gotta protect my girlfriend.”

“And it’s Nialler’s birthday so we have to be on his side,” Zayn said.

“This was so not fair. But at least I’m not the one that has to clean this up.”

“Oh, you’re not getting away that easily. You started it,” I said.

“Did not!”

“Did too!”

“Guys! It’s okay. I’ll just have a cleaning service clean it up. We’ll probably just make a bigger mess if we do it ourselves. Right now, let’s just have fun. It’s party time!” Niall said.

The boys broke out in exclamation as Lou, El, Perrie and Dani, who were all covered in cake, came over and joined us.

Since we were all covered in cake, we decided to spend the rest of the night out here. It wasn’t cold and we got the bonfire started. The other guests started drinking and dancing to the music as the party continued.

The boys went to get drinks as the girls grabbed some paper towels to try and clean themselves off.

Niall stayed with me.

He grabbed my hand and pulled me into his arms as we swayed slowly to the upbeat music.

“Thank you for today,” he said as he placed his forehead against mine.

“You’re welcome.” I smiled up at him.

“As much as I’m glad everyone’s here, I was really looking forward to going home after dinner with what we had planned.”

“Niall!” I exclaimed as I pulled back and swatted his arm. He laughed as he pulled me back.

“I’m kidding. But we could do it after they leave.” He gave me a playful smirk.

“Yeah, sure,” I tried to sound neutral but inside, I was starting to heat up.

“So can we tell them to leave now?”

I rolled my eyes as he laughed.

“I’m kidding. I’m having a great time. That food fight was epic.”

I couldn’t help the smile creeping up on my face.

“I’m glad you’re having fun.” I placed my hand on his cheek and brushed my thumb against his cheek. There was still light bruising on his eye. I was really hoping that it would be gone in time for the party.

“I'm okay.” I guess he saw the guilt and worry written on my face as I looked at him as he gave me a reassuring smile.

“I just wanted to put it all behind us but this is just leaving a reminder of everything that’s happened,” I said as I continued to brushed my thumb over the bruise.

“It’ll be gone soon. You won’t have to worry about it anymore. And you shouldn’t worry about it now. It’s all in the past.”

I nodded. “I know. I just hate seeing you like this.”

“Don’t worry about it. It makes me look tough.”

I rolled my eyes before I joined him in laughter.

I rested my head against his shoulder once our laughter died down as we continued to sway to the music. Niall placed a kiss on the top of my head as he wrapped his arms tighter around me.

“Happy early birthday, Niall. I love you.”

He chuckled, feeling the vibration against his chest.

“I love you, too, Isla.”

I don't know when and how often I can update but I will try to find the time to finish this story really soon and either start the sequel, the one about Liam OR the one about Harry.

I don't think I can write 3 stories at once, so let me know which one you guys want: Niall (sequel), Harry or Liam.

Anyways, let me know what you think will happen in the last chapter and whoever guesses right, I'll give them a shoutout on here and on Twitter!

Pleeease like, fan, comment and favourite :) And thank you to everyone's who's done it so far, especially since the beginning.
