As If By Chance

Saffron is an ordianary girl. She has a chance meeting with celebrity heart throb, Niall Horan. But will they ever become more than aquiantances?

1. The average day ....

I'm Saffron Lawrence. And this is my story. It's hard to believe and I'll try to tell it as best as I can, but I promise you, every part of this tale is true. Don't believe me if you don't want to ... I can't blame you. It's still surreal even to me.

I'm seventeen, eighteen in three months. I have sandy, long blonde hair and brown eyes. Mum likes to call them "Puppy eyes". Embarrasing, I know ...

It was one of those average days when I was working in Sainsbury's in Mullingar, stacking shelves and other boring activities. My best friend, Elsie worked there with me too. Our parents had insisted when we turned sixteen that we get a job. Slightly annoying but it turned out to be quite fun.

I was stocking the bottles of wine on the shelf next to each other on a late Thursday afternoon. Elsie was working at the till that day as one of the usual people at the till was ill.

"Saffron, get over here!" I heard my boss, Rachel Ennis, call from the store room. "Finish with those bottles, would you?" I turned around to go help her but managed to collide with something else. What in the world, I thought. I heard one of the wine bottles smash on the floor, spraying my leg in alcohol. Crap, I snapped to myself, Rachel is going to kill me!

"I'm so sorry!" I heard someone laugh. I sort of recognised the voice. Looking up, I realised exactly who it was. Niall Horan. Yes, the guy from One Direction. I thought I was going to faint.

"Saffron, what's going on out there?" Rachel yelled, storming out of the store room. She caught sight of Niall and practically choked. I stiffled a laugh. "Clean that up." She snapped when she saw. I cursed her silently as I bent down to scrape up the glass from the floor.

"Do you want some help with that?" Niall asked sweetly. I looked up, smiling, and shook my head. I was suprised at how long his blue eyes held my gaze. I would have stared all day but I caught Rachel's stern glance and scooped up all the glass quickly.

As I was emptying it into the bin, Elsie ran over giggling.

"Is that-?"

"Niall Horan?"

"Exactly." She sighed blissfully. I shook my head. She was always rapped up in celebrity crushes. I, on the other hand, had had a crush on Niall since year 7. Sad, I know. I'd met him at a choir practice and we'd got along really well. After that, he never really gave me a second glance except to wave "hello" to me when he noticed I was there. He also never came back to choir after the first time.

Elsie, of course, knew I had never really gotten over it and knudged me playfully.

"Saff, you should be over there. You've liked him, like, forever!" Elsie was such an over exaggerater. I looked longingly at Niall and Rachel but shook my head. Rachel would have my head if I talked to him whilst working.

"No Else, I can't. I'm working." I told her sternly. When she tried to complain, I shushed her. If she'd asked enough, perhaps I'd have gone over but I decided it was a really bad idea. As if Niall would like a sad girl like me. I wasn't even the same age as him. He was eighteen! And sooo out of my league.

I left Elsie drooling at the counter and went over to stack the biscuit boxes. As I was piling them on top of each other, I noticed Niall come down the aisle. My heart missed several beats. I tried to pretend I hadn't seem him but I'm pretty sure I looked stupid. He stood at my side for a moment, perhaps wondering what to say.

"I am really sorry about the bottles." He said after awhile. I met his eyes and managed a smile. He was always so sweet.

"It's fine, really." I told him, deciding to stop looking at him and concentrate on stacking the biscuits just in case Rachel came over. In the corner of my eyes, I saw him grin and stuff his hands into his pockets.

"I did offer to pay for it but she told me not to be quite so stupid." I couldn't help it. I laughed. Classic Rachel. I was suprised she'd actually said it to him though. He was famous for heaven's sake! Not that it was the reason I liked him, of course, but he was. We stood in a slightly awkward, tense silence.

"Your that girl from choir, aren't you?" He asked suddenly. I looked at him quickly to see whether that was a good thing or not. He was smiling. I hoped that meant he was happy to see me again.

"Yeah, that's me." I replied, but I didn't have the courage to meet his eyes. I stared at the biscuit boxes instead, thinking that was the best solution. He fidgeted at my side. All I wanted to do was talk to him without worrying that Rachel would be at my throat if I did.

"Saffron, right?" He asked, pulling out his phone. Was he asking for my phone number?! I nodded.

"Yeah. Saffron Lawrence." He typed it into his phone and held it out to me. As I took it from his hands, our fingers brushed. My face went scarlet. Hiding my face, I typed out my number on his phone and handed it back to him.

"Well, Saffron Lawrence, I'll call you." What?! Was I dreaming. I nodded, gulping down a squeal. All I wanted now was for him to leave so I could tell Elsie. Before he could leave, I touched his arm and he turned back.

"How long are you back for?" I asked, hoping it was a long time. His smile turned a little sad and I couldn't help but want to hug him.

"Just a week. The guys are staying round for a bit too." I got the feeling he thought I was only talking to him because he was famous. I frowned, nodding. God, I did a lot of nodding. He smiled, relaxing a bit.

"See you soon." He replied finally. He left me standing there, wondering when soon was. Hoping it was, you know, soon.
