8. Playing with fire

At the princes signal, fifty or so dancers swept through the doors wearing small black dresses with strips of pink and orange material trailing behind as if they were weightless and black masks that covered only around their eyes. They all had dark hair and if you didn't play close attention to the details you wouldn't be able to tell them apart. A drum beat started up out of nowhere and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't place the source. The dancers started moving, gracefully and flexibly, as if they had no bones. Sometimes they danced in pairs or threes and sometimes alone but they were always moving and always getting faster; so fast that they were starting to blur. Unable to watch them for much longer, I gazed around the room to take in the other guests' reactions. It was like time had frozen. No one spoke or ate or moved, everyone just sat mesmerised, staring at the dancers. I caught a gleam out of the corner of my eye and turned to see the two cloaked Eyenians looking at me. At that moment, I knew that something was wrong. My mind was screaming desperately for me to run, a primal urge passed down from generation to generation to ensure my safety. But my legs wouldn't obey. Not being able to bear staring into eyes I couldn't even see because of the shadowed hood, I turned back to the dancers, moving so fast they were just streaks of colour winding across the floor. All of a sudden a burst of fire sprung up from the middle of the dancers, curling upwards to lick at the ceiling. It was beautiful. The hypnotising flames curling around themselves. It was unfathomable; the raw destructive power of this lone flame that seemed almost alive. All I wanted was to reach out, to touch it, to mould it and to use it to create, as well as destroy. I felt my hand twitch, just with the desire to touch the open flame but part of my mind alarmed at the danger.

All too soon, the flame was gone. The dancers had stopped, curled into a ball on the floor, and the room was still. I thought maybe they were injured, but then they simply stood up and left. After a while, I noticed that the room was filled with noise. The drumming had stopped, although I don't know when, and now people were cheering or talking enthusiastically to their neighbours about the performance.

Remembering their blank gazes during the performance, I wondered if i had imagined the whole thing. I glanced back at the two figures, only to find that one of them had vanished. The other was leaning against the wall, looking around the room. I saw what I thought might have been a smug smile on their face but I couldn't be sure.

Thinking I was going mad, I politely excused myself. I planned on going to bed before anything else strange could happen. I should have known then that luck was never on my side.
