9. Murder and tree shadows

I took a route through the open courtyard to get to my rooms, hoping that the fresh air would clear my head which was still fuzzy from my hallucinations about hypnotic dancers and living fire. The stars were bright against the black sky and there were no clouds. It was a bonus of living in the central kingdom; the weather was warm and sunny all year round.

I was so engrossed with the night sky that I almost missed the sound of a twig snapping. I turned to look at the tree that stood in the middle of the courtyard. It was dark so I couldn't tell for sure, but I thought there was someone standing beneath its branches, blending in with its trunk.

‘Hello? Who’s there?’ I realise it’s a stupid thing to say because if they wanted me to know who they were, they would have revealed themselves already. I stood there for a while before reaching the conclusion that I was going mad and there was no-one there.

I turned around and was shocked to see Prince Edward walking along the corridor that overlooked the courtyard. The corridor was lit by flickering candles placed evenly along the walls and so it was unlikely that he could see me, even though I could see him. I was about to make my presence known when some guards in Eyenian clothing walked out onto the corridor heading towards Edward. Another group of similarly dressed men had appeared from behind Edward. Something about this arrangement didn’t seem entirely right to me. I knew I was right when one of the men behind Edward stealthily drew his sword and raised it, ready to strike. I wanted desperately to yell a warning to Edward, as he hadn’t yet seen his assassin, but large rough hands grabbed me and covered my mouth and nose.

I struggled, desperate, realising that I had turned my back to the tree and its mysterious shadow. I managed to get out a strangled cry and was relieved to see Edward turn to look for the noise. Too late, did he see his opponent who, instead of running him through with his blade, sliced the sword across his chest, leaving behind a trail of blood.

Something hard and sharp struck against my head and the last thing I saw before I fell into the blackness was a cloaked figure running across the courtyard towards me, behind the face of my attacker.
