18. Poor friend

I looked over at Liam and saw the tears streaming from his eyes.  I looked around at everyone else.  Nobody had noticed.  I draped the towels across my arm and slowly walked over to Liam.  How had no one noticed?  Liam was a pop star who was constantly getting attention, and nobody noticed he was crying?

"Liam?" I said when I was close enough. "Are you all right?"

His head shot up at the sound of my voice.  "Huh?  Oh. Yeah.  I'm fine."  He hastily wiped away his tears.  He looked up at me and gave me a fake smile.

"Look."  I said taking the seat beside him.  I neatly placed the towels on my nap.  "I know we don't really know each other, but if you ever have something you need to talk about, you can always talk about it with me."

He looked down at his lap for a moment, frowning.  "Daniel and I broke up." he whispered.

"What?  When?"

"Just a few minutes ago when we were on the phone."

"Oh Liam, I'm so sorry." I said not knowing what else to say.  "What happened?"

"I don't really know. One minute we were talking about how she was doing and me being on the cruise and the next she was talking about how she couldn't take it anymore.  To tell you the truth Bethany, I couldn't either."

"So you just called it off?" I asked.

"We both did.  It was for the best.  That doesn't mean it doesn't hurt though."

"Liam, I'm so sorry.  Is there anything I can do?"

He looked over at me and smiled.  It wasn't a fake smile this time though.  It was a real smile.  "No.  Thank you though.  Listening is enough."  I smiled back at him and leaned over to give him a hug. "Well, there is one thing." He said.

Bethany had refused to let me go and get the beach towels.  She had insisted that I come on down to the beach.  As she walked towards the lobby to get the towels, I turned the other way and headed off of the ship.  I stepped off of the boat and took my shoes off, feeling the soft warm sand between my toes.  I walked up and down the beach a couple of times, waiting for Bethany.  After a while had passed, I got worried and reached in my pocket for my phone.  I remembered I had left my phone on the ship.

Just as I was about to go back on the ship looking for her, I saw her walking my way.  I met her half way and wrapped her in a hug before she could say anything.  She hugged me back, flinging the towels on the ground.

"What took you so long?" I asked pulling her in tighter.  "You had me worried."

"I ran into my mom." She said.  "Everything was fine."

I pulled away and looked into her eyes.  She smiled warmly at me and bent over to get the towels.

"Shall we have a bit of fun?" she asked.  I smiled at her and took her hand.

We placed our towels far enough away from the water and took off running towards the sea.  She splashed me in the face a couple of times, making me stagger back.  I ran at her and picked her up, spinning around in circles.  When I set her back down, she stumbled a bit and fell into my chest.  I chuckled and held her until she regained her balance.  After she did, she pushed me playfully and took off running.   I chased her around the beach for what seemed like hours.

While we were at the beach, we built a sandcastle, looked for shells, and even found a crab looking creature in the sand.  We stayed on the beach until sunset, having the time of our lives.
