16. Harry Saves Me

I woke up and stretched but something was caught on my hand so my arm wouldn't move any farther. I opened my eyes to see blazing white lights above me flashing into my eyes. I suddenly realized that everything hurt in my body and I felt extermely tired. I sat up quickly and the thing on my hand moved and I screamed because it had poked me. I looked down and it was an IV poking into my skin. I was so confused and my head was pounding. I heard shuffling of feet outside the door and voices. I let out my breath finally realizing I was holding it. A woman with a white coat came into the room holding a clipboard. As she was closing the door I saw a glimpse of people outside in the white hallway. Some with wheelchairs, some with IV's attached to them and some sitting in chairs.

"Hello honey. I'm Dr.Smith and I will be taking care of you while you are in the hospital. I know you are probably wondering why you are in the hospital but I have to tell you later. First let me check if you are ok and then I can explain everything" She said smoothly. I simply nodded because I couldn't speak at the moment. Some things were coming back to mind though. I remembered what a hospital looked like and I knew I was in one. Dr.Smith took the nod as a yes and she started to examine my body. I did as she instructed and was more sore than I was in the beginning. Finally when she was finished, she grabbed her clipboard off the table wrote a few things down and then looked at me.

"Annabeth about four days ago you were in Starbucks. Do you remember?" She asked. I remembered partly but I thought I went to Starbucks yesterday. "Well" She countinued. "As you were ordering a drink, a man came to the cashier of Starbucks and asked for all the money. She refused at first because she was scared but then slowly started getting the money out of the cash register. He said if she didn't hurry up, he would shoot you because you were the closet one to him. He aimed the gun at you just as the cashier gave the money to him. He shot you anyways to make a mark that he was there. The bullet hit you on your side and you collapsed and were uncouncious. A young man that was outside came in and helped you while mayhem was going on in Starbucks. Somebody called 911 and you have been in this hospital uncouncious for four days. That is all I know. I hope it helps you try to remeber what happened. I have to go help some other patients but I will be back to help you very soon. If you are in more pain press the button behind you or call for one of the other nurses outside in the hall" Dr.Smith finished, got up from the chair and headed toward the wooden door but as she turned the doorknob she looked back and said "By the way, the young man that saved you has stayed her in the hospital for the four days you were out. He hasn't left once. So I might send him in to see you so he might go home to take a shower" She smiled, opened the door and left.

My eyes were as big as saucers and my mouth was open in a wide O because I could not believe that had happened to me. Why me? I don't even remember what happened. I closed my eyes and breathed it all in. My ears perked up as I heard the door squeak open. I thought it might be the young man who had saved me. I opened my eyes to see

I had to stay in the hospital for many weeks and it was only the second day. I was in hell. There was absolutly nothing to do and everytime I moved my side hurt where the bullet went in. Many people came to visit me but the people I really wanted were my parents. I guess I got what I wished for. It was around noon today and the sunlight was making streaks in my room. I was watching TV but I couldn't become comfortable. I was still very confused but I could talk again and most of the shock had worn off. I sleep mostly all day but that's normal. I had looked away from the TV and glanced out the window and then back to the TV and then back out the window. Outside two figures were crossing the grass very quickly. I sat up more and adjusted my eyes to the light to see outside. I gasped, it looked like my parents. I pressed the intercom button and old voice said "Hello how can I help you?"

"Can you switch me to the front desk please" I said quickly while drumming my fingers against the bash bed. I heard a beep and then another voice.

"Hello Annabeth. How can I help you?"

"I have a question. Did you call my parents and are they coming?" My heart quickened.

"Yes we did and they should be here either today or tommorw"

"Ok thank you!" I squeaked.

"Your welcome dear"

I let go of the button and turned back around to stare at the door. My parents burst through the door excatly 22 minutes and 32 seconds later. They were panting and looked very tired. Then we just stared at each other. Nobody said anything for a long time. Since we left on a bad note, I decided to start with a good one.

"Hey Mom and Dad" I said cheerfully.

"Hello honey it's nice to see you. Are you feeling better?" My mother asked after a slight hesitation.

"Nice to see you again too. And yes I feel much better but I have to stay in the hospital for a few weeks because of my condition"

"Well we will stay with you, the whole way to recovery" My father said slowly. I smiled warmly. My parents did care but it was hard to accept that because their here I might not stay as long as I hoped.
