Can We Fall (Harry Styles Fan Fiction)

Maisy was trying to make things work- she really was. She was working hard to graduate, pushing away a social life in the process. She was trying to help her sister, Rose, who was dating Cory, a total jerk and cheater. She was also trying not to fall in love, believing that it would prove too much of a distraction. And she was right. When she meets Harry on a rainy day at Disneyland, will she choose a the life where she is at the top of her class with a supportive family, or the life where she is truely happy, with the one who she loves?

2. Thunderstorms

I absentmindedly tapped my foot on the damp pavement as I looked around for something else to do. I was at Disney for a moment, and it was almost deserted because of the bad weather forecasts. But being the stubborn girl I was, and the fact that I needed something to distract me, I came anyways.

I wandered aimlessly through the different attractions, trying to decide what to do next. It was drizzling now, and my stupid hair was sticking to my stupid face. I was in a bad mood. Why did Rose have to date that jerk? He was a good-for-nothing cheater. Just thinking about what he did made me sick; I haven’t told Rose what happened yet. How do you tell your sister that? She probably won’t believe me though- she worshipped the ground Cory walked on.

I kept walking around the walkway when I stepped in a puddle, completely soaking my shoes.

“Oh, seriously?!” I said a bit too loud as I lift my foot up in disgust. Could this day get any worse?

I scanned over the signs and something caught my eye- something called an Animal Actor Show. I pulled my phone out of my back pocket and looked at the time; it was 12:20 now and the next showing was at 12:45. It sounded kind of cool, so I shrugged and walked towards the bleachers. It was pretty empty, with random people scattered throughout the huge bleachers. I looked around the stage. It looked very jungle-y and there was a jumbo screen going through commercials at the moment. I picked a random seat that was in the middle and near the front, but I was still far away from the crowds.

After everything that has happened over the past couple of days, all I wanted was some privacy. I needed to think- think about how what to do next, how I was going to deal with Cory, and how I could do all of this while also graduating from High School.

But I guess it wasn’t too obvious to the outside world that I wanted some alone time, because just then a boy sits down next to me.

He turns to me and flashes me a smile. “Hey there, beautiful. What’s your name?”

Was this curly-haired stranger really trying to flirt with me?

A few hours ago, we had been sitting in the hotel room, bored out of our minds. We had just arrived in California to record our new album, and we had no idea what to do. Then, Liam had the idea to come here, to Disneyland.

So here we were, standing at the entrance, looking around at the damp park. It had started raining on the way here, but we decided we were man enough to endure some water. Luckily, the rain let up and now all we were left with was a grey sky and wet pavement.

We were now discussing where to go next, and we all had our own ideas.

“Rollercoasters!” Louis exclaimed, hopping up and down like a kid in a candy store, or, under the circumstances, a kid at Disneyland.

“Let’s go take pictures with the princesses!” Liam interjected.

“Rollercoasters sounds cool.” Zayn lazily mumbled.

“All I want it food.” Niall’s stated simply.

“How about we watch one of those shows?” I had seen as big sign on the drive here advertising an Animal Actor Show, and it looked pretty cool.

“Rollercoasters!” Louis repeated, louder this time.

I looked over at him and gave him a glare and a quick shake of my head. I would not be going on any kind of rollercoaster today- that I was sure of. In return, Louis gave me a silly grin and stuck his tongue out at me.

Liam held up his hand to quiet us, which we did immediately.

“Well, since it’s raining and there aren’t a lot of people here, we could split up, right? Just try not to get noticed?” He paused and we all looked at Paul for his input.

Paul raised his eyebrows at us. “You really think you could walk around Disney without a single person recognizing you?”

“We’ll keep our hoods up!” Niall added, making his puppy face. I silently applauded him for that- nobody, not even Paul, could refuse Niall when he pulled that face.

“If I had known that you wanted to slip up, I would have brought more security. But since it’s just me, I don’t think it’s too good of an idea.”

“Oh, come on, Paul! We won’t get noticed! Barely anyone is here and it won’t look weird if we have our hoods up because it’s sprinkling.” Zayn bargained with Paul.

“We’ll be like ninjas!” Louis karate chopped the air and raised one foot up to show his ninja-potential.

Paul sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose, thinking.

“Don’t worry, Paul; just look around, no one’s here. It’ll be fine.” Liam reasons.

He looks at us and sighs. “Alright,” he pauses and we cheer. He raises is hand so he can speak again, and he points at Louis. “But I’m staying with Louis, and Liam, you stay with the others.”

Louis whines. “But why am I the one who gets the babysitter?”

“Because you’re the craziest.” I say and Louis smirks, almost like he’s proud of that fact. I turn to Paul. “Can I go my own way? All I want to do is go to a show. I’ll sit in the corner and blend it.”

Paul just nods before he is dragged away by Louis towards the rollercoasters. I start off towards a map kiosk and I hear Liam behind me trying to get Zayn and Niall to agree on what to do.

I’m glad I get to be on my own. I like the silence. I pull my hood over my head as I reach for a map make sure to advert my gaze to the floor. If anyone saw me, I would be in a whole lot of trouble. I open the map and scan the list, finally finding the Animal Actor Show; the next showing was at 12:45 and I pulled out my phone to see the time. It was 12:25, and I was about to lock my phone and put it away when I got a text.

I chuckle at his horrible spelling and put my phone back in my pocket. I look down at the map follow the path until I see the Animal Actor Show sign. I put the map in my back pocket and the rain begins again; its light at first, but it slowly grows. I pick up my speed and manage to get under the shelter awning with 15 minutes to spare. Under the roof, there’s a big stage that looks like a jungle, except for the big screen in the middle, and big bleachers across from it.

I scan the seats, happily surprised to see that there’s barely anyone here. I step forward, deciding to sit at the top right, but I stop.

My eyes had been curiously wandering the bleachers, and they landed on her.

She was sitting in the middle of the front row, and she was looking out at the dark sky that was just visible over the stage’s back wall. She looked upset and she kept running her fingers through her red, curly hair.

Screw being invisible, I had to talk to this girl.

I sat down next to her, and my heart was beating slightly faster as it always does when I’m around pretty girls. But something was different about her. I don’t know if it was the way her mouth hung open slightly when she was deep in thought, or the way her dark blue eyes looked at me when I sat down.

It was now or never- time to turn on the charm. I flash her the classic Styles Smile.

“Hey there, beautiful. What’s your name?” I say in my deep voice, and I’m surprised to see how annoyed she looks.

“Anonymous.” She quickly replies, and she turns back to staring at the stage, where an employee has walked out and announced that the show was going to begin in ten minutes.

“Okay, anonymous. May I ask what you’re doing here alone?” I don’t give up that easily.

“Family problems,” she glances over at me and to her lap quickly when she sees me studying her face. There was something about this girl; I couldn’t put my finger on it. For some reason, I didn’t feel like charming her, as have done with so many other girls. I genuinely wanted her to like me.

“Care to talk about it? I have learned that talking to strangers about your problems makes you feel better.”

She turns to me and studies my face, looking unsure. “Why are you doing this?”

“Doing what?”

“Talking to me. Aren’t you…” She slowly ends her sentence in the middle, probably not sure of how to say it.

“Famous, you mean?” I finish for her.

She nods silently, and keeps staring at me. I was right- she was different. When I mentioned who I was to other girls, they would giggle and shyly look away. But this nameless girl kept her eyes locked with mine.

“You’re Harry Styles.” She says, ending the silence between us.

“Yeah, and why would that make me feel any less obligated to help a girl, who I see clearly needs to talk to someone.”

She pauses, thinking this over, before smiling and turning towards me. She moves one leg over the bench and scoots herself closer to me, beginning to tell her story.

“My sister, Rose, is dating this total jerk, Cory, and I know he’s being…” she paused, looked at her hands in her lap. “I know he’s been unfaithful.”

“May I ask how you know?” I turned to face her, also putting one leg on one side of the bench.

She looked at me, shame written plain across her face.

“He kissed me,” she said shakily. “And he tried to…” She was interrupted when a sob escaped. She buried her head in her hands and tried to calm herself down.

Rage ripped through me. I hardly knew this nameless girl, but knowing that he tried to do that to her- her sister’s boyfriend, no less- made me want to find the bastard and rip his bloody head off. I pulled her towards me and stroked her hair as she cried softly into my chest.

I stared ahead, planning what I would do if I even saw him.

I calmed slightly when she sniffled and looked up at me with those beautiful blue eyes. Those eyes could end wars.

She blushed as she sat up and wiped away the tears from her red eyes, still sniffing. It surprised me when I saw that there was no makeup running down her cheeks; was all her beauty natural?

She gave a small laugh and stuck her hand out for me to shake.

“I’m Maisy Bryant. It’s nice knowing that fame hasn’t made you into an arrogant asshole.”

I laugh and shake her hand; there were no words to describe this girl, or should I say, Maisy.

“Maisy- I like that name. It suits you. I don’t think I’ve met another Maisy before.”

“Thanks, I guess. My parents got it off of the movie Uncle Buck.”

We began to talk casually, about Maisy’s school, her hobbies, likes and dislikes, and I stay as far away from talking about her sister’s boyfriend and what happened. I was involved in the conversation, sometimes talking about myself and the boys, but I couldn’t get rid of the rage in the back of my mind.

As I talked with Maisy, I learned how amazing she is. She’s smart, caring, nice, completely hilarious, and not to mention, gorgeous.

She knew about One Direction- she was a fan- and she admitted to having bought all of our songs and listening to us in her free time. But she wasn’t suffocating me; she didn’t ask me things that were too personal or too weird, as a hardcore fan would. She treated me like a normal person, and that’s why I liked her so much.

We stopped talking when the show began, and we both moved so we were facing forward. The announcer came on stage, and did a few tricks with some animals. There were some really funny bits, at which Maisy would laugh, causing me to laugh. When I was around other girls, they would hold back their natural laugh and give me a really soft giggle, but Maisy didn’t hold back; when she laughed, her body shook and she would have these random moments when she snorted. It was perfect.

We were about half way through the show, and the announcer was in the middle of a skit with an orangutan, when a loud clap of thunder rolled through the large stadium. Beside me, Maisy jumped in surprise and I looked over to her, concerned that maybe she was afraid of thunderstorms.

“Are you okay?” I wrap my arm around her and pull her close. I know I just met her, but I was having a hard time having self-control. Our legs were pressed up next to each other and her right arm kept brushing against me. She doesn’t argue, but looks up at me, smiling crazily.

“I’m okay. It just startled me.” She started jiggling her leg and tapping her fingers on her knee and I notice that she’s lost interest in the skit and is now focusing all her attention on the storm that was raging outside.

“Why are you smiling like a madman and getting all fidgety?”

Maisy slightly shoves me with her shoulder. “I just really love thunderstorms.” She gives a squeal of glee when lighting illuminates the bleachers for half a second.

I hold her tighter in my arms. “That’s cute.” I whisper into her hair.

My heart skips a beat when she leans her head back and rests in on my shoulder. I notice how her leg and hands have stopped moving, and she’s relaxed next to me. I close my eyes and rest my cheek on her hair and close my eyes. I feel her gently tangle her fingers with mine and I can’t stop myself from smiling.

We stay like that for what seems like hours until the storm ended.

“Hello, folks! I would just like to announce that the storm has moved on and it is safe to go out now! We do have another show to set up for, and other crowd coming in, so if you would please make room for the next guests!”

Maisy and I slowly moved apart, but our hands remained linked. She arched her back and stretched, stiff from sitting for so long. We stood up, not sure of what to do next.

“I guess I should go.” Maisy said, sadly. She didn’t really make much of an effort to hide the sadness in her voice. She let go of my hand and looked at me one more time before turning and walking away.

Did I like her?

No question about it- yes.

Did I want to see her again?

Nothing would make me happier.

“Maisy, hold on!” I yelled after her. She had only made it to the end of the row and was about to step into the crowd leaving. She turned to me, smiling widely as she anticipated my next words. I ran towards her, reaching in my back pocket and pulling out my phone. “Could I get your number?”

“Could I get your number?”

My heart stopped for a second and then suddenly started drumming incredibly fast. I nodded enthusiastically, causing my hair to fly around my shoulders. I probably looked like a complete idiot- but I didn’t care. He wanted to see me again.

I gave him my phone number, which he took with a sparkle in his eye. He locked his screen and looked at my expectantly. I was about to ask if he had something to say to me, when I felt my phone vibrate in my back pocket.

“Excuse me.” I said, grabbing my phone, and he smirked.

I unlocked my phone and saw a text message from an unknown sender.

From: 310-589-6347

Would you like to get some coffee?

I looked up at Harry. “Is this you?” I ask him, showing him the text.

He nods. “Would you like to go out?”

I looked down, embarrassed about what I’m about to admit. “I, uh, don’t like coffee.” Personally, I think coffee is one of the worst flavors in the world.

He laughs and grabs my hand. “I’ll get you a hot chocolate, alright, love?”

“That sounds perfect.”

He smiles goofily at me, laughing slightly over the fact that I don’t like coffee. I turn and walk off the bleachers, Harry walking behind me. We leave from under the shelter and start to head towards the entrance.

We are about to walk out, when Harry suddenly stops.

“The boys! Hold on-” Harry takes looks at his watch, muttering something about the time. I look down at my own watch and see that it’s 2:30. “They should be here…”

I’m about to ask him if the others are here came to the park with him when someone yells.

“HARRY!” I look around and see someone running towards us; I saw stripes and I knew it was Louis. He was running wildly towards us, flailing his arms around. He was being followed by a middle aged man, who I knew was Paul. Louis came up to us and stopped, leaning over and taking deep breaths.

I looked over to Harry and raised my eyebrows. He was about to say something when he was interrupted by someone else.

“Crazy weather, huh?” It was an Irish voice, and I knew it was Niall. I turned to my left and saw Niall with two others- Zayn and Liam- who were both looking at me quizzically. Niall, on the other hand, was too busy eating his cotton candy to notice me.

“Who are you?” Louis asks me, and I notice Niall’s head snap up at the mention of an unknown person.

Harry answers for me. “This is Maisy. We’re about to go out for some coffee and hot chocolate. Care to join us?”

“If there’s food- I’m in.” Niall says, stuffing more food into his mouth.

They all agree, and we follow Paul out of the park. Every few seconds, I look around at the boys to make sure that this is actually real. Just last night, when I had stormed into my room after my fight with Rose, I was listening to their music, and now I was casually walking around with them.

We started towards a van that was parked near the curb and I realized that the image I had of them was wrong- they were actually really quiet.

“Maisy,” I hear Louis address me as we all climb into the car. “Do you happen to, by any chance, like carrots?”

Well, maybe some things I presumed about them were right.
