8. Work

I sat on my couch typing up an email to my mom. Yes she had a phone and all, but she wasn't the best texter. My wet hair from my shower stuck to my back. In a loose bright pink tank and some white shorts I felt super comfy. My parents were planning on coming to nationals and I could not wait. Connor still had to see if he was able to miss practice for track. Even though it was summer, they took training pretty seriously.

It was 3 and I had to leave for work at 3:45. I was so nervous for work, but the thought of my parents kept me calm. I heard my phone ding in the kitchen and stood up. I carried my laptop into the kitchen and set it on the counter and typed a few more words then grabbed my phone. It was from Tami asking how lessons went. 'Fine' I replied. 'We played volleyball after. Super fun. Seriously crushing on some of the boys though.' I smiled as I hit send. I did have a lot of fun playing with them. They were super easy to be around and I hoped that we all could become close friends. I checked my twitter and found all of the boys' accounts after some searching. Plus they tweeted each other constantly. I followed them and looked at some of their tweets. Will's latest was 'I might love volleyball more than surfing!' Zayn's was 'I'll be a surfing pro soon:)' and Niall's was 'Really needing some chicken right now.' I laughed. That boy and food.

Time passed quickly and I went and got on some denim shorts and a white tank. I swear I lived in swimsuits and shorts and tanks. But with the nice Cali weather, who wouldn't? I applied some mascara, a hint of pink lipstick then grabbed my blue messenger bag and phone and was out the door. Tami texted me back 'Jealous. Hopefully I will be able to stay tomorrow! These kids are about to drive me INSANEEEE.' I just laughed as I hopped into my mustang.

I got to Chabans and walked in. The smell of french fries and burgers hit me. I usually was fine with the smell but for some reason it made my stomach go queasy. I shook it off and went to the back and saw Rick talking to an employee.

"Evelyn!" he said smiling.

"Hi."

"So glad your here!" he said going in for a hug. I did not feel comfortable hugging him at all. He is my manager... which is just weird. So I kind of pulled away making it an awkward type of hug that some one like a weird neighbor or your strange aunt would give you. He cleared his throat.

"Well I'm going to let Rita show you how to 'work the strings' and just help you out!" he said hitting my shoulder softly. He was so awkward. The guy that interviewed me and the guy who was talking to me now was like two different people. Rita came around the corner.

"Oh hi!!" she said fakely and gave me a squeeze on the shoulder. What was with everyone and touching my shoulders?! "How are you?" she said with big bright eyes.

"I'm super duper amazing!" I said giving her back complete fakeness. Her smile turned into a thin line as she cocked her head. She didn't like that I was dishing out exactly what she was giving.

"Wow you guys already get along so well!! I can tell you'll be the best of friends!!" Rick said putting his arms around both of us.

"Yaaay." I muttered under my breath.

Rita showed me the menu, the different combos, tips for talking to customers, all the jazz. I thought I would be actually taking orders, but she wanted me to try and memorize the menu.

"I didn't know that was one of the requirements..." I said. "Do you have them memorized?" I asked lifting my eyebrows.

She scoffed. "Why would I have it memorized??" she asked with a puzzled look on her face.

"I don't know. Maybe cause you work here and you're having me do it??" I asked. Her face stiffened.

"Keep studying." she said as she walked away. I sat in the back for the rest of my shift looking at the menu. It was 12:10ish and some people were still in the restaurant, just small talking.

"Come out and help me clean." Rita said coming around the corner.

"What? No more memorization? Why??" I asked.

She rolled her eyes. "Your so immature." She said throwing a rag at my face, but all I did was laugh.

"I was joking!!" I yelled out.

I went to my first booth and started wiping down the table. I was fine for about a second then I started feeling incredible dizzy. I grabbed my head and tried to keep the room from spinning.

"Come on Evelyn I want to go home. Stop being lazy." Rita said from the end of the row of tables. I kept my head in my hands.

"I... I.. can't.." I tried to finish but the words wouldn't come out.

Rita's POV

"You.. you... can't what?" I said extremely annoyed.

I looked over at Evelyn. Her hands were rubbing her head.

"You okay?...." I asked as I stopped cleaning. She dropped her hands and let out a big breath. She looked up at me with a pained look on her face.

"Evelyn your face!" I said as I walked quickly over. Her face was completely white and her pupils were dilated.

"Maybe you should sit down, get some water. Something." I said touching her arm. I didn't like her at all, but seeing any one like this would put any one in a panic.

Evelyn's POV

"No I'll be fine." I let out slowly.

I didn't want to seem like a wimp on the first day. How lame would that look. Rita nodded after a second and started to walk away. My chest suddenly started to hurt. It felt like a million bricks were going against my lungs and I found it hard to breathe. Then I felt my legs give out and everything went black.
