16. Cheesecake

Yeah I practically suck at updating. I am so sorry. Thanks for all the sweet messages. I love you all and that is why I am updating xx -m.rose

Tami had brought my phone, a big water bottle and some goldfish to me at the hospital. I loved goldfish so much. I talked to my mom for almost two solid hours, reassured her that I was still alive and would see her in a week. She was crying so hard on the other line that it made me cry. She apologized for being a 'bad mom' but I reminded her that she was not to blame that we were so far apart. It had been my choice to stay here. After I got her to calm down, I asked her what was going on in the neighborhood, or with our extended family, trying to get her mind off my disease. After ten minutes of us saying goodbye, but then talking about other things, I hung up.

I watched some tv, then played on my phone for a minute, then watched some more tv. The nurses had brought me food throughout the day, and then I would sleep. I was seriously so bored. In a way, I think that going through this made me realize how blessed I was when I was healthy. My health turned out to be something that I had taken for granted because I never thought it would get taken away.

It was a good thing I got discharged tomorrow because I was honestly tried of being in the hospital. I swear it drained my energy even more, even though I did practically nothing. Being at the hospital was a constant reminder of why I was here - which I wanted to think about anything but that. I wanted to play on my phone again but it was only at 14% and I didn't have my charger, so better not risk it. My phone dinged as I stared at the tv.

Hello :)

I pulled a face. Creepy hello from some number I don't know. Stranger Danger. Stranger Danger.

Hi who is this?

The imessage icon immediately popped up as the person kept typing.

Harry duh.

oh haha sorry. And how was I suppose to know that?? how did you get my number?

Tami gave it to me.

I sat for a second longer, then he sent.

I hope that is alright.

No yeah its fine!

Ok good. Do you like cheesecake?

Cheesecake?

I heard the door faintly open and saw Harry with a small box, a grin plastered on his face. "You didn't answer my question!" he whispered like a little kid as he shut the door quietly.

"How did you get back here?? Its way past visiting hours!" I said, making a small effort to sit up.

"eh its not too late." he said as he pulled up a chair.

"Its 12:20" I said checking my phone.

"So the party has just begun." He said smiling as he took off his jacket and handed me the box.

"I hope you like cheesecake."

I opened the box and there sat a big piece of cheesecake and a fork. I smiled at the thought and looked back at him.

"Thanks." I said shutting the lid.

"You don't want it?" He asked, scrunching his face together.

"Well I'm not going to eat in front of you."

"I don't care. You deserve it after what you have been through." He said leaning back into the chair. I giddily opened the box and grabbing the fork took a bite. The goodness ran smoothly over my tongue making me happy. It was nice to finally get the metallicy taste out of my mouth. Harry eyed me as I went to take another bite. I slowly put it in like he was judging me or something and only got a stifled laugh in response. I grabbed another bite and motioned it outward to him.

"No I'm good." He said waving a hand. I dropped a face saying 'are you kidding?' and he scoffed, smiling and leaned forward and took the bite.

"So they said you can still surf?" he asked. I nodded as I chewed the bite.

"Just have to be careful as always." I said as I covered my mouth with my hand, the disappointment clear in my voice. Yes I was talking to a hot boy while food was still in my mouth. Of course I grew up with manners, but when I am hungry, I eat.

"That's better than nothing right?" he asked. I looked up at him. Yes it was. But I was selfish. I didn't want want to be careful. I wanted everything to go back to normal. I wanted to be normal. I tried not to think about myself, but it was hard.

"Yeah I guess." I said with a faint smile.

"So" He started as he ran his fingers through his hair. I hated when boys did that. They made it look so effortless, and on Harry, it looked extremely hot.

"So"

"I don't really know anything about you." He said crossing his arms. "Want to play 20 questions?" he asked raising his eyebrows.

"Sure!"

"Okay" He sat for a second. "What is your full name?"

"Evelyn Brett Morgan"

"Brett huh?" He asked.

"My parents were planning on having a boy." I said rolling my eyes.

"Harry Edward Styles. You know" he started "I could call you Brett if you like" he said raising an eyebrow. "Yeah okay and I'll call you Edward" I said smirking. "Hard pass on that. Harry will be fine" He said laughing.

"Favorite season?" I asked.

"I love fall. I love the leaves changing. The colors are magnificent and walking through a forest of yellow, reds and oranges is so calming."

I closed my eyes. "Describe it." I said quietly.

"It is completely silent." He pauses. I peek open one of my eyes and see him smiling at me.

"and?..." I say.

"Close your eyes!" he laughs."You walk down a trail. All you see for miles is tall trees. You can smell the fresh pine as it falls to the dirt floor. The yellow and orange leaves frame the sun above, as the red leaves contrast strongly against the blue sky. The warm breeze whips past your face while the leaves rustle in the distance. The sun peaks through the holes of the leaves, random spots of sunlight hitting your face. More leaves fall slowly to the ground, stripping the tree to its bare branches."

He stopped and I couldn't stop imaging. I was there. In that forest. And it was beautiful.

"Plus have you ever crunched a leaf under your foot? It is a cool sound" he said smiling as he pulled me out of my daydream.

I laughed "No I have not. I haven't been in a forest in years!" I said. "Of course the leaves change everywhere, but when I did live by a forest, I was younger, so I don't remember it."

"I'll have to take you sometime" He said, the grin still on his face.

You are amazing at describing things." I said smiling. "I feel very..." I searched for the word. "Calm. Which is nice. I haven't felt that with the past events." I said playing with my fingers.

"Well if you ever need help falling asleep, you know my number" he said smiling. I swear that was all he did. Smiled. But I did not care. I actually enjoyed that he always seemed so happy.

"What about you? What is your favorite season?" he said, bringing his ankle up on his other knee.

"I like summer?" I said letting out a short laugh. "That is all I am around and I love the heat. Simple as that. And don't ask me to describe it because I would probably make it sounds like a poem written by a five year old." I said raising my eyebrows.

He laughed "I bet you aren't as bad as you think" he said smirking. I rolled my eyes playfully and rubbed my eyebrow. "Your turn" I said as I kept my attention on my bed.

"Most prized possession?" He asked.

"My surf board." I answered without hesitation.

"No uncertainty there?" He said.

"It was a no brainer! You?"

"Probably this" He said pulling his hoodie away from his wrist to show a very simple small brown rope, tied at the end. "I know it doesn't look like much, but my sister gave it to me when we were younger. We found this rope in my mom's craft box, so we decided to make each other bracelets. It has stretched over the years and I have never taken it off."
"Ever??" I asked raising my eyebrows.

"Ever." he said while he looked at it and ran his fingers over it.

"Wow." I said staring at the bracelet. "And here I am with not being able to describe things or have certain important ties to anything."

"You have important ties to your board!" he said putting his leg back down. "Obviously you have a connection to your board. You have been surfing for a long time, you just have never had the opportunity to describe it. Come on lets try" He said sitting up in his chair.

"Noooo" I said pulling a frown.
"Come on its just me"

Exactly.

I moaned. "Close your eyes." He said, his voice as smooth as velvet. I followed, unwilling, and closed my eyes. "Now think about what you do. Just talk to me, but try giving me details."

I made my breathing steady and took a breath. "I take a step on the sand."

"What does the sand feel like?" He interrupts.

"It is grainy. and slightly damp. The small pieces go in between my toes."

"Good" He urges. "Keep going."

"My body hurts." I continue.

"How Evy? What and where?"

"My left shoulder is always more sore than my right. Probably from practicing  an aerial so much. My muscle feels taunt but as I start stretching, it loosens up. And my body just feels worn out."

"Describe the weather Evy."

"The sun is just barley peaking over the low mountains. There is a slight breeze, but it is warm and carries the smell of the salty water. There are some clouds in the distance?" I say raising an eyebrow, though my eyes are still closed. I have no idea what I am doing, but the words seem to be coming continually.

He laughs quietly. "Keep going."

"I start to jog out to the water. I can smell the salt on the surface." I start laughing. "Can someone smell salt??"

"Yes" he said laughing again.

"When the water hits my feet, it is like tiny bolts of electricity hit my nerves." I laugh and am happy that I can't see Harry's face, cause I feel the heat rising in my cheeks due to my embarrassment. "I have never been hit by electricity, but the water makes me feel tingly." I take a breath and try to keep imagining. "The water keeps getting higher on my legs as I jog through the water. I can feel the wax over the smooth surface of my board and place it down in the water. I put my body on the board and start paddling. My muscles start pulling and an excitement and anxiety surge through my body as I go farther out."

I open my eyes slowly to see Harry, with his eyes closed breathing slowly. He opens sleepily and shoots me a toothless grin. "You just needed a little help. That was good. I was there with you."

I brought my hands to my mouth. "I can't believe I did it! I've never described anything, but when you asked me questions of what to say, it came out easier than I thought it would." I said looking back at him, his smile still on his face.

"I knew you could do it." he said squeezing my arm. I looked down as his hand, then glanced back at him. He cleared his throat and let go, sitting back in his chair.

I swallowed and some how got out "Favorite desert?"

"I like cheesecake" he said smirking. I grabbed another piece and offered it to him.

"I'm pretty sure I got this for you." He said as he took the bite.

"I like sharing." I said smiling. "And I love cinnamon rolls."

"Yes!! What kind of frosting??" he asked

"Creme cheese of course."

"Mmmm you're making me hungry." I tried to ignore how he sounded as he moaned and gave him another piece of cheesecake. "That honestly wasn't a notion to give me another bite" he said lifting his hands. I just laughed in response. "Favorite color?" he continued.

"Black"

"Black isn't a color!!" He said laughing.

"It is too a color!! If I point over to that drawer and I say 'What color is that' you would say?.." I waited for his answer.

"I would say it is a dark color, or a black shade." he said folding his arms.

"No you wouldn't!!" I said laughing as I nudged my knee with his leg. "Fine if you want to get technical, I guess its a shade. I like turquoise."

"Those are two complete opposites" his smile still on his face.

"Are you gonna answer the question or not?" I asked laughing.

"What if I don't?" he said questioning.

"I will put this cheesecake in your face." I said trying to be serious as I hid the smile that so desperately wanted to appear on my face.

"I dare you too." he said squinting his eyebrows leaning in closer. I sat up, urging him to fight back. The mood in the room instantly changed from funny to stressed as our laughing died down. I looked in his eyes. They were a green forest that drew me in the more I looked. "You have beautiful hazel eyes." He said quietly. My breathing became constricted as we never broke contact and I don't know if it was because negli's was affecting me again, or if it was because Harry was so close to my face, but either way I started to feel dizzy and grabbed my head slowly.

"Alright probably not." I said as I scoffed and laid back down.

"Are you okay?" Harry asked, his fingers slightly touching my wrist.

Yes I would be better Styles if you would stop making my skin feel like it is on fire.

"Yeah I am fine, I should probably go to bed though." I said as I ate my last piece of cheesecake and motioned Harry to eat the last piece. His concerned face knotted together as his eyes stayed glued to mine as he took the last bite. I put the empty box on my side table and relaxed back into my bed.

"The gang will come get you tomorrow around one" He said as he stood up. "That is when the doctor said we could come anyways."

"Okay" I said feeling incredibly sleepy. "I'll see you guys then."

"I'm glad you are okay." He said grabbing my hand softly and rubbing the space between my thumb and pointer finger with his thumb. "Don't scare me like that again." He said quietly.

"I'll try not to" I said as a small smile cracked in my face.

He lifted my hand and gave it a gentle kiss, my heart instantly melting.

"I'll see you tomorrow Evy" he said as he placed my hand back down. Everything about him was so gentle. Sincere. "Okay." I said turning on my side.

"Don't forget, we still have to finish our game of 20 questions okay?"

"Okay."

"Goodnight" he said as he started to walk out.

"Goodnight" I said as he turned one last time before he walked out the door.
