12. 11 June, 1865

We found an empty base camp in front of the ruin. The entrance seems to have been opened recently. The voice grows louder and urges me to go in. I need to go in. The doctor’s probably in there, waiting with tea. I’ll walk up, smile, and proclaim:

“Doctor Thompson, I presume” Yes. And then he’ll open two giant chest full of gold! and we will return to England as heroes! And then I can retire, then I can rest. I cannot wait to go in. I shall regale what I find there tonight in this very journal!

Henry closes his journal as he stands up. “Let’s get in there, men!” he barks at the remains of his party. The front of the ruin depicts a scene carved into it. Henry observes it, a gigantic monstrosity eating people as if they were peanuts, it’s many mouths gnashing as it observes its prey through black eyes that follow the viewer. Its arms protrude from its contorted body, right above a bloated stomach. Tentacles sprout from its back, grabbing the poor souls that try to flee. As Henry stands there, he orders his men to begin pushing the door open. It takes all of their combined strength, but it budges. The group spends a good thirty seconds staring into the abyssal darkness within, until one attempts to run away, screaming prayers. He doesn't get 5 meters before Henry aims and fires his last shell into his back, all while staring into the open door. The voice in Henry’s head grows louder and louder every second, until he cannot take it anymore and begins taking decisive steps towards the inky blackness of the ruin. As he goes in, his terrified men follow, clutching their weapons more for comfort than protection. the last thing they hear is the door closing behind them.
