blood·thirst·y (bldthûrst)
1. Eager to shed blood.
Madeleine Booker has a perfect life. Or she did. Until she woke up one day with absolutely no recollection of what had happened the night before.
Oh, and one other thing. She was a vampire.

I launched myself at him, ready to tear him apart with my newly pointed teeth, but to my surprise, he deftly caught me in his arms and hugged me. "Aw, how sweet," he said. "I love you too."

I ripped myself away from him, and glared up into his face. He smirked, and his fangs glinted in the light of the dingy bulb hanging from the ceiling.

"I--hate--you," I heaved. "You turned me into a...a monster."

He looked slightly offended. "I'm not a monster. I don't even drink human blood."

"So you DO drink blood."

His smirk was back. "It's kind of like eating meat. I mean, humans eat hamburgers and stuff. The animal's dead from that anyway."

"I'm a vegetarian." I said frostily.

"Well that's just gonna have to change." He crossed his arms and glared at me.

I glared right back.

Lars walked into the room, sighing and rolling his eyes. "Sorry, but this isn't working. Alistair, this is Madeleine. Madeleine, Alistair."

"I said I could handle it." Alistair said to Lars.

"With all due respect, sir, you were failing. Miserably."

Wait. "Sir?"

"Yes," Lars said almost jovially. "I work for Mr. Phoenix's family. I'm their chauffeur."

"And a vampire?" I asked.

"Otherwise I wouldn't be able to work for them," Lars explained, "but enough about that. The reason I brought you here is because Alistair needs your help."

"Wait, wait," I interrupted. "I still have a few questions."

"Whatever," Alistair muttered.

"Why me? I mean, do you even know me?"

"I wish I didn't," Alistair muttered.

"Well," Lars interjected, "Alistair's family just decided for him to go to a dance and pick the first person he laid eyes on."

"So," Alistair continued, "I picked you, and took you away from your friends and that other guy." He glanced at me. "You wouldn't remember any of this."

"No, I don't." I glared at him.

"So, I changed you, and then I wiped your memory."

"Wait, you 'changed' me? What does that mean?"

"It means he bit you," Lars cut in.

"Bit me? I thought you didn't drink human blood." I raised my eyebrows at him.

"Well.." he stumbled over his words. "We're not...supposed to, but sometimes there are exceptions.."

"Why did you change me? And WHY did you make me forget it?" I asked, changing tracks fast because I was scared.

"Like Lars said, I need your help. There are evil vampires in the world. That drink human blood. And I had to wipe your memory because my parents said they didn't know if you were going to be evil." He broke off and hesitated. "Look, Madeleine, I have to...find...the evil vampires. It's a quest, okay? And if you don't help me...we have to kill you."

Of course they do. Because rich vampire families don't care for anyone but themselves. I had already made up my mind to help him, but I was not going to enjoy doing it.

"Fine. I will."

Alistair's features rearranged into something happy. It lit up his face, a real smile, and I got caught up into it for a few seconds. Then I shook my head.

"On one condition."

His face stayed the same. "Anything. I can get you anything."

"Once we're done with this stupid 'mission' of yours, you make me human again."

Alistair said nothing.

I was confidant they could. I mean, you had to be able to be changed. You couldn't stay a monster forever, could you?

"Maddie...sorry...there's no way. I'm sorry."

He was just trying to get me to go along with him. Typical rich kid.

I crossed my arms. "You're just gonna have to kill me then."

"There is a way," Lars said quietly.

"What?" Alistair and I said in unison. We both turned to stare at him.

"I said, there is a way. But it's only possible if you don't drink any blood."

"Then we'll have to do this soon," Alistair said with finality. "Vampires can last about eight days without drinking real blood, but by then, substitutes aren't enough."

"Yes." Lars said, "There are fake blood energy drinks that you can have. They taste awful, but..."

"Umm." I said. "Hate to break up the party here, but I have to go home. School's over."

"Yes, I will drive you," Lars said.

"Bye, Alistair."

"I'll send Lars for you tomorrow."

"Wait, what am I going to tell my parents?" I can't exactly say that I'm on a mission with an incredibly hot but annoying boy to go hunt down evil vampires and ps I'm a vampire too okay catch ya later!

Alistair smiled. "I'll take care of that."

"Ookay..." I was suspicious.

"Bye Madeleine. Oh, and some advice?"

I glanced up.

"Don't go to any Italian restaurants anytime soon."
