Hurting the one you love

Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, you always end up hurting the one you love.

19 Year old Skye lives with her boyfriend Dominic.
Every time he promises (every time he breaks that promise) to stop hurting her. When Skye meets the charming 20 year old Thomas, she finds herself laughing and enjoying time with somebody else for a change.
She soon discovers that there is more that one way to hurt the one you love...

3. Avoiding questions

Skye twisted around slightly at the sound of the car pulling up. Dominic had not returned to pick her up after she had finished work. Had something held him up? He never had actually said he would pick her up, but after him giving her a ride today... She had figured he would. She had waited outside in the pouring rain for nearly half an hour now, without her umbrella. As a result she was no soaking wet and had the appearance of a drowned rat. Earlier this morning her had looked shiny and had been curled and twisted till perfection. Now it clung to her neck, in a most irritating fashion, and fat droplets slid down her back. It was like the weather was determined to ensure she was completely wet.

Maybe some of the wetness on her face, was not all from the rain though. No matter how hard Skye tried to remember that no promise regarding her journey home had been made, she felt let down and hurt.

When the car stopped in front of her, Skye knew it was not Dominic. The car was black, as different from blue as it was possible to be.

"Are you waiting for somebody?" An infuriatingly familiar face and voice spoke from a rolled down window. Part of the fury she felt was at the fact that once again he turned up when she did not want him to. Also, if she was completely honest with herself, the fact that a stranger showed more interest in her well being than her boyfriend... It caused a stir of anger.

" Yes actually" She replied, in clipped tones. Hopping to convey that he should just leave now.

" Running late?" He asked

To that Skye merely shrugged and glanced away, if Dominic came and saw this... Tom did not seem like he wanted to leave just yet though.

" Need a lift somewhere? I think your ride is delayed." Mr. confidant here! How could he possibly know what Dominic does? Well, the voice of reason spoke, he doesn't know what Dominic does! Its called a informed guess. Dominic is not here, which means he is delayed.

"Im sure it is going to arrive any minute now" Skye said firmly.

" Skye, I know you want to avoid questions. Waiting outside in the rain is not going to help that case." Unexpected, she had expected some kind of threat... Not an offer stating the truth. Standing in the rain would attract attention.Grumbling she climbed in the car.

" Nobody ever asked questions until you showed up." She said quietly once they started moving.

" Well I intend to find out what is going on here. Until then that means keeping you alive. A.K.A  not letting you catch pneumonia in the rain." Skye flinched at the words 'keeping you alive' they sounded like he knew of Dominic... He ignored her shudder and carried on speaking. Once the rest of the sentence had been heard, she realized it was nothing of the sort.

Turning the radio up slightly, Tom focused on the road again. Determined to remain silent Skye looked out the window. Watching the scenery flash by. The rain lashing against the windows blurred everything outside so it was hard to distinguish, but the blue car would be instantly recognizable if she saw it.

"Whats wrong? Did you really want to wait in the cold?" Tom asked after a while.

"I just... Like watching the rain on the windows. I used to do it when I was younger. Try and see what lay beyond the glass I mean." So much for silence!

"I used to do that, drove my parents crazy. I was always telling them what I could see and then eventually me dad would just tell me to only tell them if I found a golden parrot wearing jeans!" He admitted, glancing out the windows himself.

Laughing at the thought of a young, and by the sounds of it even more annoying, Tom bothering his parents Skye turned to face him.

" Did you ever find one?" She teased. He shook his head, in mock mourning.

" No... I regret to say I did not. I saw a few hippies with the same coloring as parrots, but never the golden parrot with jeans." He sighed, making Skye giggle again.

'Really! It wasn't even that funny!' Skye thought, cursing herself.

"Well im glad your laughing, think its the first time I have ever heard or saw you laugh!" Sobering up immediately, Skye turned her back on him. Facing away from him again her mouth split into a grin, who said she could not laugh? (Well nobody really...)

"Are you back to ignoring me now?" Tom asked after about a minute.  He sounded rather worried, no longer able to keep from laughing she turned around again.

"No, its just funny winding you up!" Skye burst out laughing again. Had she ever laughed so much in one day?

"That is not fair! Its my job to wind you up, not the other way around!" He whined.

Looking out the window again briefly, Skye saw a familiar blue car. WHAT!

Shrinking back into her seat, she waited until the car had driven around a corner, before breathing out a deep breath. Tom seemed to notice something was off. He looked quizzically at her before asking if everything was alright. Nodding numbly Skye just said. " Can you drop me off here please?" Still frowning at her, Tom pulled up on the side of the road. They were just outside the Library, she could go in there and wait. She had never lied before to Dominic, but... It could not be any different to lying to other people could it?

"Wait, Skye!" Tom called, but she did not hesitate and sprinted into the library.
