My Brother's Best Friend.

Scarlett Brooks begins sixth form college. She begins to find out secrets about her brother, secrets she wishes she sometimes never found out. However, she does take quite an interest in one of her brother's best friends.

4. Is It A Date?

I woke up and rubbed my eyes. The light drifted in through my curtains and hit me right in the eyes and blinded me. I threw the duvet off me and got out of my bed. I opened my wardrobe and pulled out my uniform and threw on it on carelessly. I am so tired. I put on a light bit of makeup and brushed through my hair. I lifted my school bag and slumped downstairs to the kitchen. Riley and my mum were already there eating their breakfasts. Riley snorted when I entered the room.

"What?" I sighed and sat down on a chair. A bowl of cereal was already out for me so I just added the milk to it and took a spoonful. "Nothing.. nothing.." Riley laughed. I rolled my eyes and went back to eating. "Soo.. anything you'd like to share with us Scarlett?" my mum asked. I looked up at her with the spoon halfway in my mouth. I pulled it out and shrugged. "I don't think so.. why?" I asked suspiciously. "Oh ok. Doesn't matter. I'm going on to work now. You two lock up and your money is on the counter." Mum said and kissed us both on the top of our heads. As soon as she left I turned to Riley. "Whats going on?" I asked angrily. "You were out really late last night. Who were you with eh?". I froze for a minute as I thought about yesterday with Louis. We were out until about 1am and I had to sneak in through the living room window. Obviously though, I was caught. "Oh, um.. Just a few friends thats all." I had to lie. How could I tell him that I was out with his best friend?! He would definitely take it the wrong way. "Oh alright fine whatever." Riley said standing up and picking up his money and stuffing it in his pocket. "Hurry up and eat. Im going upstairs to get my bag and then im leaving." he added and walked out of the kitchen

I downed the rest of my cereal fast, grabbed my money and ran out to the front door. I stood there ready and Riley came down a few minutes later. "Lets go." he said opening the door and walked outside and I followed him.

We got the bus and as usual I sat with Maisie and Riley sat up the back of the bus with his friends. I told Maisie about Louis and our late night adventure and all she could do was giggle the whole time and make comments like 'aw thats so cute!'. I had to keep reminding her every 5 minutes that nothing was going on between us though.

We arrived at school and everyone piled off the bus and went into school. The bell instantly rang as we entered the building. I looked at Maisie and sighed and we both headed of to our first class together. As we sat in class doing our work Maisie kept quizzing me on Louis again. "Did he act or say anything that might mean he's into you?" she asked shading in the heart she drew on the top of her page. "I don't know.. I guess not.. We're only friends and he's my brother's best friend which would make it a little weird don't you think?" I asked her. "It wouldn't be totally weird. Lots of people date their siblings friends, its normal." she replied still concentrating on her heart. "You think..?" I sighed. "Yeah." she nodded looking up from her heart to me weirdly. "What?" I asked raising an eyebrow. "You're kinda getting into this.. are you SURE theres nothing going on here with you two?" she asked. "IM SURE!" I shouted a bit too loudly. "Miss Brooks. Move your stuff and get up to the front of the room please." the teacher shouted. I looked down at Maisie as I picked up my things. She looked up at me innocently and mouthed 'sorry'. I gathered all my things and brought them down to my new desk and dropped them onto it.

The whole day dragged from then on in and I was thrilled to finally hear the bell for the end of the day. I walked out of my class and started heading for my bus. I got onto the bus but Maisie wasn't there so I took a seat and waited for her to show up. While waiting someone sat down next to me. Louis. I looked at him weirdly then looked at the back of the bus to see if Riley had seen anything but he was too busy talking to his mates. "Um what are you doing here? Visiting your 'Grandad and Grandma' again?" I said mockingly. "No, im here to talk to you." he grinned. "About..?" I asked slowly. "Well, last night was fun right?" he asked. "Yeah it was great, why?" I answered. "Well i'd like to do it again sometime.. but maybe more official." he said. "Official?" I asked not knowing what he meant. "Yeah, instead of just walking round the neighborhood like creeps until 1am we could go somewhere like the cinema or something then out for something to eat.." he explained. "Oh yeah sure, id like that." I nodded with a smile. "Alright, great" he smiled. "When are we planning on doing this then eh?" I asked. "I dunno yet, i'll text you when I think of a good time." he replied. "You have my number?" I asked and he nodded. "You gave it to me last night" he laughed. "Oh right, sorry.. forgot." "Don't worry abou-"

"Scar, its our sto- Louis? What..?"

Me and Louis looked up at Riley staring down at us. "Um ah.. um.." Me and Louis looked at eachother. "Im going to my grandads and grandmas again.." Louis replied fast. "Then why did you sit down here? Me and the boys were up the back." Riley said suspiciously. "Are you getting off the bus or not?!" the bus driver shouted down at us. Me, Riley and Louis piled off the bus and stood looking at eachother awkwardly. "Ok you know what, I don't care." Riley laughed and started walking back to our house.

I looked up at Louis and smiled. "Well that was awkward.." I laughed. "Yeah I know, but seriously, why does he get to call you 'Scar' but last night you nearly killed me when I called you it?" he grinned. "Because, he's my brother and i've known him all my life." I answered and started walking towards my house and he followed. "But i'm your best friend." He chipped in. "No, Maisie is my best friend.. and thinking about Maisie, she wasn't on the bus.. I better ring her and she if she's ok." I said picking up my speed. "Ouch, i'm hurt." he laughed. I ignored him and continued walking. I reached my house and started walking up my path to the door. "I'll text you later about our little night out!" he shouted as I opened the door. I nodded and walked inside closing the door and ran upstairs to call Maisie.

As I dialed her number into my mobile my phone buzzed to say I had a text. I was expecting it to be from Maisie but it was Louis. I literally left him a few seconds ago! I opened the text and started reading it.

"I'm thinking Friday night @7." I read out loud.

"Sounds good." I typed in and hit send. A few seconds later my phone buzzed again.

"I'll pick you up at home."

"No. Don't. Riley will be here."

"Riley's out, some party for our year. Don't worry."

I sighed and without replying deleted the messages and rang Maisie.

"Where were you? You left me on the bus." I said as soon as she picked up.

"Oh yeah sorry about that Scarlett, I had a dental appointment, didn't I tell you?" she asked.

"Um no, you forgot to mention it. Anyway, don't worry about it. I'm, um, going out with Louis on Friday night." I said casually. I closed my eyes tight waiting for her reaction.

"Are you serious?! How did this happen? When?! What!?" she started freaking out.

"Well all thanks to you I guess and your dental appointment. He caught my bus again and sat next to me and we arranged it." I explained fumbling with my hair.

"Thats crazy! I can't believe it! What about Riley? Did he catch you?"

"Yeah he did, he seemed a little miffed but then said he didn't even care and walked off. I guess that shows he does care." I sighed.

"Who cares what he thinks. He'll get over it, don't worry. Just focus on Friday night now. You like him then?"

"What? Louis? No, I don't like him Maisie! We're going out as friends I promise."

"Then why do you care so much about what Riley thinks?" She stated and I could practically see her eyebrows raised as she said it. There was a knock on my door then. "Ugh Maisie, I need to go. I'll talk to you later." I said pulling myself off my bed. "You like him! Whatever you say! Bye!" she laughed and hung up. I sighed loudly and threw my phone back down on my bed and opened my door. Riley stood looking at me.

"What do you want?" I asked. "I want to know whats going on." He asked. I laughed at him but he didn't laugh back. He was serious. "N-nothings going on Riley. He's just making me feel welcomed to the school, its not a crime." I said turning away and sitting on my bed. He stepped inside and closed the door, folding his arms. "Scar, I don't want you involved with him. Or any of my friends alright? We're not into the same things as you and you'll only end up getting hurt." he said harshly. "Whats that supposed to mean? You're not into the same things as me?" I asked confused. "Think about it Scarlett. We go out every weekened, what do you think we do? You go out every weekend, you go to your friends and sleep over, do whatever 16 year old girls do, I don't know. We're 17 year old guys, get it in your head Scarlett. He'll just use you like we do." My eyebrows creased together and my eyes narrowed. "You use girls? You said "we". Is that the kind of guy you want to be then? Following the crowd to look big and tough, Riley?" I asked standing up and closing the gap between us. "I didn't mean that" he said and backed away. "-Just be careful." he added and walked out of my room.

I stood fixed to the same spot thinking about what Riley had said. Louis was going to use me? I tried pushing the thought out of my head. I didn't want to think about what Riley and his friends got up to every weekend. I didn't want to think about what him and Louis did.

I lay in bed for the rest of the night and skipped dinner. I didn't want to look at Riley as it would just remind me of what he said. My phone vibrated on my bed and I picked it up and opened the text without reading who it was from.

"Is it a date?"

I raised my eyebrows and looked at the sender.

As i was typing a reply my screen changed to an incoming call and Louis' name flashed on my screen. I pressed the green button and brought the phone to my ear.

"Is it?" he breathed. I didn't know what to say. "Scarlett? Is it a date?" he asked again.

"Is what a date?" I played dumb.

"You know what. Our outing to the cinema on Friday. Is. It. A. Date."

"No." I answered quick. There was silence on the line as I waited for him to say something. Anything.

"Well, good. I'll see you Friday." he replied after a few seconds and hung up. Fast.

I placed my phone on my charger and sat it on the table next to my bed. It was late and so I got under my covers, turned off my light sitting on the table and stared at the ceiling.

I wanted nothing more than to end mine and Louis' outing now before it even began after what Riley had told me but i was intrigued. I wanted to find out what it would be like. Is he really what Riley had said he was?

One thing I know for sure though is that it isn't a date.
