14. Hatred Grows.

(Scarlett's POV)

As I open my eyes I remember the events of last night as I take in the sight of Louis sleeping next to me. The blood has dried in completely and isn't so messy looking anymore.

His chest lightly rises and falls as he sleeps and I can't seem to take my eyes off his body. For the first time I notice the tattoos on his stomach and upper arms. I reach out and begin to trace the tattoo on his collarbones which makes him groan and shuffle around. His eyes slowly open and he looks at me in confusion for a second and then smiles.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to wake you." I whisper.

"It's fine. I could be doing with another painkiller now anyways." he says and begins to sit up but I push him back down.

"No way, you need to be resting!" I say and stand up, lifting his glass from last night and walk out of his room and down the corridor to the bathroom. I fill up the glass and search the cupboard again for more painkillers.

When I get back to his room he's up wearing jeans and pulling a shirt over his head.

"What are you doing?" I ask him and set his glass and tablets on the table.

"I need to take you home later obviously" he says and cocks an eyebrow at me.

"You really think i'm going to let you drive anywhere today? Especially to my house where Riley lives?" I laugh and he shakes his head. "I don't care if Riley is there or not, I'm taking you home." "Louis, your one job today is resting" "I'm perfectly capable of driving you home, I just need my painkillers and i'm all set." he grins and brushes past me to retrieve the water and tablets.

"Okay, you know what? Fine, but if you're in agony whilst driving do not complain to me because it'll be your own fault." I tell him and he laughs in agreement.

As he walks around his room, picking up his shoes and putting the clothes I had thrown over his chair away I finally asked the question that was bothering me.

"Does Liam know then?" I mumble and he stops what he's doing to look at me.

"I'm not sure yet. I only made it clear to Riley and Tessa that I knew about them unless one of them told him."

"It'll break him.. if he doesn't already know that is." I sigh and shake my head in disapproval of Riley's stupid, irresponsible actions.

"C'mon, lets get you home." he says extending his hand for me to take it.

He leads me through his still empty house and outside to his car. I get in and rest my head against the cool window as he gets in the other door and starts the car, pulling out of the driveway.

Louis parks directly outside my house this time. No more need to hide, I think to myself. Riley obviously knows after me jumping on him to defend Louis last night.

"Do you want me to come inside with you?" he asks and I look at him like he's crazy.

"No way, I don't want him near you. I need to talk to him, I need to be alone with him." I say, trying to sound angry and powerful, but I know he knows better. He reaches across and kisses me lightly. "Don't let him hurt you. If you think you're in trouble get out of there and call me, quick." he says sternly and I try laugh it of but he doesn't even crack a small smile. "I mean it Scarlett. We both know what he's capable of. Be careful alright?". I agree with him and we embrace for a few seconds before I pull away and get out of the car and trek up the short path to the front door.

I hear Louis' car drive away and I don't dare look back, in fear that i'll chicken out of going inside. I shakily pull my key out of my pocket and go through the door. I hear the TV on in the living room and I head in there to check it out. My mums sat happily watching it, not knowing how messed up her son and daughter's life's currently are.

"Hey Scarlett! How was Maisie's?"

I stare at her blankly, until I remember my lie to her and pull a fake smile. "Brilliant, it was such a fun night." I lie and she believes all of it. "Is Riley home?" I ask without giving her a chance to reply to my previous words. "He called last night to say he was staying at a friend's house. Probably won't be home for a while." she smiled and stood up. "Now you're home i'm going to go shopping, anything you want for dinner?" she asks me and walks past me to collect her coat and bag from the small stand. "Anythings fine." I reply a little too quickly and she stares at me weirdly before thinking twice and thinking nothing of it. "Alright then. See you later." she smiles and kisses my forehead and walks out the door leaving me standing alone.

He probably knew I'd want to talk to him straight away. I pace back and forth in the tiny hall debating what to do. After not being able to come up with anything useful I sit down in the living room and flick through channel after channel until I hear the front door open about 45 minutes later. I rush out into the hall expecting to find my mum carrying grocery bags instead finding Riley wearing the same clothes from last night except now they have a new accessory.

Blood. Louis' blood.

We stare at eachother, neither of us moving or breaking the other's gaze. It took the pain from my teeth being clenched together so hard to snap out of my stare and say something.

"I can't believe you. You're so fucking messed up Riley."

"The last thing I need is another one of your stupid ass lectures about my life." he says pushing past me and heading for the kitchen but I reach out to grab his tshirt and hold him back. He looks down at my hand, clutched to his shirt and then back up at my face. The look he gives me sends a shiver through my body and I feel the fear strike.

"Let go of me Scarlett. The last time you got in my way someone was there to stop me, we're alone this time."

I don't loosen my grip.

"You need to learn that you can't go round beating people up to get your own way, Riley" I say, trying to sound fearless but my voice cracks and my facade fails.

He grips my wrist tightly, and forcefully pulls himself free from my grip and pushes me back against the wall.

"That's it then? That's all it took for you to be against me? You're on their side now?" he shouts in my face.

"Their side? There's no sides Riley! I want to help you!"

His grip tightens and I wince. "You just don't get it! You humiliated me last night. I'm your brother!" He screams.

"The boy that was my brother would have never hurt me. He would never have hurt anyone. Last night proves that you aren't the boy I grew up with. You've completely changed Riley. And as for humiliating you? No, I didn't do anything. You humiliated yourself!"

With one swift movement of Riley's i'm on the ground and he stands above me, looking down.

"Fuck this! Fuck all them! If you want to be with Louis so fucking much fine by me. Just don't come back to me when he fucks you over and your left by yourself because I won't be there for you. I despise them all. You're all worthless! I don't need any fucking one of you" he spits. He walks to the front door, and walks out, slamming it as he leaves.

I lie there on the ground as his words sink in with every passing second and my heart shatters inside of me. As tears begin to fall and I begin to feel again the pain in my wrist and my back makes itself known. I examine my wrist and the redness of it stands out. It's definitely going to be bruised. I hold onto the wall as I pull myself up off the ground and into the living room. I take out my phone and look at it.

There are five texts and two missed calls. The two missed calls are from Louis and three out of the five texts are also from him, asking me to phone him as soon as possible.

One of the other texts is from Maisie asking me if i'm angry with her which I quickly reply to, telling her i'm not and the other is from Harry, who I don't even know had my number.

'Hey Scarlett. Hows Louis? Hope you're alright too.-Harry'

'Hi, yeah Louis is doing good. I'm alrig-'

I stop typing and quickly delete the entire message before typing another one in.

'Hi, can you come over to mines? I need your help.'

I send the message and wait for a reply. A few seconds later Harry's name flashes on the screen and I open the text.

'Yeah sure. Is everything ok with Louis?'

'He's good. He's back home resting. Please hurry.'

As I send the message and place my phone down on the seat next to me the tears flow out of me once more as the pain seems to intensify.

My phone flashes next to me a little while later and I see the incoming call from Louis. I wipe my tears quickly and clear my throat before answering.

"Scarlett? Are you alright?" he asks, worry coming across clear in his voice.

"I'm fine. I haven't seen Riley yet." I lie. "I was helping mum clean, that's why I didn't text earlier."

"Oh. I was about to come over, I was scared something bad had happened." I could almost see the smile that I was sure was covering his face.

"Sorry for worrying you so much." A knock on the door makes me jump. "Louis, I need to go help my mum again. I'll call you later?" I say. "Yeah that's fine. If you see him later, remember what I told you. Be safe, Scarlett.". I look down at my shoes. "I know. Bye." I whisper and hang up the phone and tuck it into my pocket as I approach the front door and open it.

I relax as I take in Harry standing infront of me and motion at him to come inside. He steps in awkwardly and turns to face me as I shut the door.

"Whats wrong?" he asks and studies my face for hints.

I hold my sore wrist up and wait for him to make his judgement on what could have possibly have happened to me. He looks at my wrist and then at my face and begins to talk but stops himself.

"I don't understand.." he trails off.

"It's what happens when you confront Riley." I shrug and his face falls. He slowly takes my hand into his and gently brushes over my wrist with his fingertips.

"I want to fucki-"

"No please." I say and shut my eyes. "You'll just be as bad as him."

"Tell me everything." he says and pulls me into the living room to sit down. And I do. I tell him everything.

I tell him about the first time Riley ever laid his hands on me. I told him about me and Louis and how Riley isn't accepting and I told him about how Riley and Tessa were the real reason that Riley and Louis had been fighting in the first place. I also told him the painful words Riley had said before he left.

"Have you told Louis yet?" he asked after I had finished.

"Not yet. I don't want him flipping out and doing something completely stupid." I sigh and he nods in agreement.

"I kinda knew you didn't tell him. He would have been here." he says with a small smile.

"I don't know what to do. I just don't want Riley to hurt him again."

"But you can't just let yourself be caught in the fire and accept it. What Riley has done to you isn't right and he needs to know that! And if that means Louis knowing and me, him and the guys going to have a... talk.. with him then-"

"No! He's still my brother, i'm not letting you do that! And I don't want everyone knowing" I interrupt and he nods.

"I still think you should tell Louis though. He needs to know atleast."

"Alright fine." I sigh. "Can you take me there? And be there with me when I tell him? I don't want him making a stupid decision without thinking on it." I ask him.

"Of course, I'll be right there."

We leave my house and drive to Louis'. All the lights are on inside the house and I know that his family must be home.

Me and Harry walk up to the door and I knock on it and we wait.

Felicite opens the door and she smiles as she recognized me and probably Harry.

"Louis is in his room." she says  as she shuts the door. I thank her and follow Harry down the corridor to Louis' room.

"Hey man!" Louis says as Harry walks inside. I walk in and Louis' smile vanishes. He looks at our faces which are showing no signs of happiness.

"Whats going on? What happened?" he gushes frantically looking at us.

"She told me about Riley hurting her. He did it again."

As the words come out of Harry's mouth anger takes over Louis and he kicks a small table and the light that sits on it falls to  the ground, luckily not breaking.

"What did he do?" Louis asks as he places  his hands on my shoulders and looks into my eyes, like he was searching for answers in them.

"He- he just grabbed my wrist and threw me on the ground. I'm alright though I promise." I say, trying to calm him down.

"Did he do this before I called?" he asks  and I don't answer. "Tell me Scarlett!" he raises his voice. "Louis.." Harry warns but Louis doesn't take him on.

"Yes."

"Why didn't you tell me?! You asked Harry instead? Why?" he asks.

"I didn't want you to freak out. I'm sorry, I didn't know what to do, I was scared and I didn't want you to end up getting hurt again, I wanted to protect you that's all.."

"And what about me wanting to protect you? You're the one getting beat up day in and day out by that psychopath and it hurts me equally as much to see you in pain, especially by someone you thought you could trust and loved you!"

As he speaks i'm unable to look into his eyes and I stare down at the ground.

His hands slide down my arms and he lifts up my hand to look at my wrist. The bruising has become more visible now and as he takes it in I can see how much its taking him not to break.

"He's not going to touch you again, I won't let him." he whispers. His arms wrap around my body and he pulls me into him, as he kisses the top of my head. I sink into his body and I realise just how much I longed for his touch, his embrace.

Riley isn't going to hurt me anymore. Louis has promised me. I have him and Harry now, they won't let him.

I tell myself that over and over whilst Louis holds me in his arms. But when he lets go, the fear consumes me once more.
