Chapter 1 - I’m An Average Girl

Colette Larsen POV

The brisk spring air fanned over my face as I stepped down the stairs of my apartment building and into the noisy New York streets. The streets that I have learned to call home. I tied the strings of my grey jacket across my chest as I made my way down the street to Dukes, the restaurant that I am currently working at.

Working as a waitress for the rest of my life was defiantly not my dream. I am only 18 and still have loads of time to figure that part out.

I want to go to school for defiantly, that I know for sure. To figure out what I am going to do after I graduate with a diploma is the part I haven’t thought the whole way through. But until then I am stuck working the rush hours at Dukes saving up for my schooling.

I turned the corner and Dukes came into view. I only lived about a block and a half away so I walk.

“Yo Elliot? You back there?” I yelled to the kitchen as I pulled my long, wavy, rusted brown hair up into a messy bun.

There was crashing noises and the sound of water splashing everywhere and then Elliot appeared  in the doorway.

“Oh hey Colette.” He said with a smile. I giggled at him knowing he was the cause of the rekus.

Elliot was a bit taller than I, not by much though. He had dark brown almost black hair that looked as though he got out of bed, ran his hand threw it and nothing else. He was my best friend at the restaurant. He was a bus boy working up for his first car. Only 16 but he was very protective. He grew up with 3 younger sisters so if you disrespected a woman, you would hear from the likes of him.

“How are the wife and kids?” I joked as I gave him a quick hug and headed to the counter to grab a pen and paper for the orders I was about to go take.

He laughed. “Good, although I should warn you, Katerina is being extra bitchy today.”

I groaned. Katerina was our boss, even though she was only 2 years older than me, she acted like she was so much better than us. Her father was the owner of Dukes and he made her manager.

I braced myself for a hectic day and made my way to the table full of girls to take their orders.

“...yeah he is afraid of spoons! How cute is that! Oh and Za-...Oh hi.” The short dirty blonde haired girl gave me the evil eye as I had interrupted their conversations about spoons. I swear I always walk up to hear the weird part of the conversation.

I took their order and a couple more but by 1 o’clock no many people came into the restaurant so I just talked a bit with Elliot and played on my phone.

“Hey have you heard they had to close down the airport yesterday.” Elliot said snapping me out of my intense game of Fruit Ninja.

“Really?! Why?” I asked him truly surprised.

“Apparently there was some really famous band flying in and the fans went insane.” He replied.

“Wow, what band?” I asked.

“Um, I have no clue...I think they are from like England or something.” He said.

“That’s cool.” I said not really interested in the conversation.

At 5 o’clock I said my goodbyes and headed home. When I got to my flat my room mate and best friend in the entire world was on the couch watching cooking shows. Like usual. She was majoring in Cullinary Arts at Uni and she was was amazing at everything food. We even talked about her opening up a resturant and I handle all of the buiesness part of it while she cooks to her hearts content.

“Hey loser.” I called to her.

“Hey.” She replied to engrossed in her program to even pay attention to the fact I called her loser.

I chuckled to myself and went to my room leaving her to her passion. I check my facebook and twitter and after a bit I got extremely bored. I was a little hungry so I thought I would head over to the local Starbucks that was down the street.

I asked Heather if she wanted to come with and she said she didn’t feel up for it. I didn’t blame her, she had just spent the whole day at school, done homework and was nearly falling asleep on the floor with a blanket around her.

I changed into my favorite jean shorts, paired them with my black lace leggings, and threw on my shin high army boots. I stayed in the dark green sweater that I had put on earlier, who was I trying the impress? I double check my makeup making sure it wasn’t all smuged. I barely worn any anyways. Just a bit of eyeliner on top and some mascara. My boring brown eyes didn’t give me much to work with when it came to eye makeup. I left my hair down, grabbed my wallet and phone and started walking down the street.

I was almost to Starbucks when my phone started buzzing. It was a text from my little sister.

Hey cole, I just heard One Direction is in NYC! If you see them can you please get an

autograph for me?(: Miss you, visit soon! x”

I laughed at my phone. My little sister Avia was 14 and was obsessed with this band from the UK. Oh! Wait! That’s probably the band Elliot was talking about. One Direction huh? I replied to Avia quickly.

Hey Avia, haha! Okay I will keep a look out for them ;). Miss you too lovely. I will try to visit as soon as I can(: xx”

The rest of my family lived on the other side of the country. Literally. Los Angeles, California. Heather and I both grew up there. When we turned 18 Heather and I decided to leave, to much of the same place got boring. New York was always somewhere we both wanted to live and they had great Cullinary Schools here for Heather so it made sense.

I do miss my family like crazy. Avia is probably the coolest little sister there is. I love her to death. I have a little brother as well, his name is Michael and he is 10. Yeah, we are all 4 years apart. My mom is crazy like that. Michael could be the sweetest thing in the world or the most annoying, depending on what day you catch him on.

I walked into Starbucks and was a bit surprised that there weren’t many people in there. It was 7:20 and that’s usually when teenagers would some in, get a drink and do some last minute studying. My face must have had the same expression that I was thinking because the woman behind the counter snapped me out of my trance by saying,

“They are all over at the Today Show studios. Some big boy band is performing there tomorrow and they are lined up in tents all down the block.” The middle aged woman said with a hint of amusement.

“Oh, yeah I heard there was some famous band in town.” I told her while I walked up to the counter.

“Teenaged girls these days.” She laughed. “What can I get for you dear?” She asked me in a friendly tone.

I smiled and order my drink and a chocolate chip muffin. I was turning around to go sit down at one of the colorful booths in the corner when my foot hit something hard and before I knew it I was on the floor, my drink spilled everywhere and my knee throbbing.

“Oh Jesus! I’m so sorry!” The strong Irish accent said. I assumed the owner of this voice was the one who had just caused me to trip.

“Don’t worry about it.” I laughed. Don’t ask me while but ever since I was a kid I would laugh when I was in pain. A pair of hands grabbed my elbows helping me to my feet. I lifted my head and was met the most gorgeous pair of blue eyes I had ever seen. The brisk spring air fanned over my face as I stepped down the stairs of my apartment building and into the noisy New York streets.
