When she was young girl, Janet couldn’t wait for her Aunt Martha to die.

A few years later, when she’d moved into her teens, she even thought seriously about helping the old girl along. And there’s little doubt that she would have if she could have. If she’d had wherewithal. Or the know-how. Or the help. Because she’d not yet met David. But when she did, it didn’t take her long to realize that he would have been prepared to help her. She felt intuitively that together they would have found a way to kill the old lady.

Aunt Martha’s piano was a true marvel. Even the uninitiated could see that. An antique Steinway Rococo Victorian Grand. It was worth a mint and Rubenstein and Horowitz would have been proud to play on it. How she’d acquired it, no one knew, but it dominated a large room in her house where it was treated with the utmost respect. With kid gloves. And Janet was in love with it. But she was only allowed to play it under strict supervision, and on special occasions. When she did, though, she knew the sound they produced together was truly amazing. That’s why she wanted it so badly. And, apparently, would even have been prepared to kill to acquire it.

Then her mother told her that the piano was destined to become hers anyway. Martha had confided in her sister that Janet would inherit the magnificent instrument when she died.

‘Silly old cow. She can’t even play. And I don’t want to wait that long. Why doesn’t she just give it to me now instead of leaving it to me in her will?’
