I Refuse To Fall, When They Still Exist

Rio has been hunting for angels since she can remember; travelling from state to state since she was born. When a shadowey succubus nearly takes away her breath, she has to fight to survive. And fight off her desires for the mysterious emo kid that helped her out.

26. Chapter 24

I'd let Charles drive us out to the second drop-off point, which was actually an open field. The snow there was so thick, there could be sheep in there, and I wouldn't notice.

"Is this it?" I asked, severely underwhelmed.

"Not quite yet. Listen." Belial said, as he could pick up what I couldn't. A whirring, throbbing sound I normally associate with Hollywood heist movies and action dramas. He described it perfectly, as the orange chopper landed in the field. The blades spun like a tornado in overdrive, and I wondered if they'd catch my hair. If those blades could hold my weight, I would never be bored again, but I'd upset the balance. Hey, if a postage stamp could upset the balance, then I certainly could.

"What about the tru-"

"That'll be sent along later. Now get on with it, before another angelic fucker shows up." Charles cut in, as me and Belial were hustled up to the copter. Snow clung to my jeans, sinking through to my skin. The chill burned like fire, as it crept up my legs. I'm definitely getting frostbite later.

The side door of the chopper slid open, and a blonde kid in a parka hung out of it. "You might wanna give me that." He said, indicating the pistol in my hand. There was no way in hell I'm handing it over though; I don't trust him enough.

"Oh, just move the hell on with it, Rio." Belial snapped, swiping the pistol out of my hand and pushing me hard in the back. If I could be bothered to, I would have shoved him right back, but I couldn't be asked. So I just made a mental note to get him back later.

"Smart move. I'm Dylan, by the way. Welcome to the Alliance." Parka Boy grinned, as I crammed myself against the window. Belial forced himself next to me, as the door slid shut.

"Hey, Rio?" Belial asked, once we were airborne.

"What?" I replied.

"Promise me you won't bite my head off for this."

There are dozens of things that could do that for me. "No promises."

"Have you ever...this is gonna sound silly, but...have you ever fallen in love?"

How much of a fucked-up question is that! Yeah, I don't wanna see you get hurt, but I'm not in love with you. "No. I refuse to let myself fall in love. It's too dangerous, when those angels still exist."

"Oh." He sounded disappointed then, and a little pissed off. "So, if it wasn't too dangerous, then...would yo-"

"Don't pressure me. I'll think about it, but don't be too disappointed if I don't."
