6. Second And Third Combined

For the second time today, we - meaning Desdemona, Adonis and I - all have to follow my all high-and-mighty, go-by-the-book parents on a trail for our second challenge. Hours go by, and all we're doing is walking. My paws are aching and heavy by the time we reach our destination. Looking around, all we see - all anyone sees, really - is...

...One stupid, lousy tree.

"You've got to be kidding me. What are we supposed to do with this?!" I shake my head in frustration. My mother flattens her ears against her skull.

"Let me explain, child..." She said simply. "Then you will understand." I narrow my eyes at her, waiting as her silence presses on and on...

And on...

And on... ...

Ugh!

"Get on with it!" My mouth was open, but I didn't say that. Desdemona had growled it. Out loud.

My mother grins wickedly at her. "It was a test of patience, Desdemona. And you have lost." If I was human I would have snickered. But, being a wolf, all I could do was snort. Adonis caught my eye, and I couldn't hide my amusement at watching Desdemona mess up, big time.

Embarressed, Desdemona flattened her ears, and with a huff, glares at some invisible person in the distance, who is cowering under her glare. Maybe. Actually, they're probably laughing, wondering what the hell is up with the poodle.

My mother sighs. "Right then, the real challenge. You have to find a way to get onto the lowest branch without touching anything beneath that branch with your paws. Go, have a try! Smallest kill goes first." Smallest kill of course, was Desdemona. And the lowest branch is about two metres off the ground. We're only one metre tall.

With a grin, I watch as Desdemona circles the tree, obviously clueless of what to do. Then, I watch as she springs into the air, aiming for that one branch...

And laugh when she fails miserably.

As her face collides with the stick, I begin to laugh so much that my sides hurt. I can't help it. But the thing is, my laughs are silent, because laughing isn't natural for wolves. It wouldn't sound right.

Desdemona stalks back to her place, head low.

Next up is Adonis. I have stopped laughing by now, and am silently willing him to find a way up. As he glances around the area, I watch as his eyes lock on something that has been hidden from us. A step ladder, not too big, but would help Adonis make the jump.

Adonis walks over to the step ladder, and picks it up with his jaw. A smile plays on his lips as he trots back to the tree, placing the step ladder down. Hopping up on the thing, he manages to catch his balance. Adonis takes a leap of faith, and...

... Fails.

He's clung onto the branch with his upper body, while the back half of his body is dangling helplessly off the tree. My eyes crinkle with sadness. He didn't make it, I think, he's not fit to be alpha...

This makes my chest feel like it's about to cave in, but somewhere in my heart I know it's true. If he doesn't have the skills or smarts to survive alone, how could he keep others alive?

Blinking, I come back to my senses, and begin to walk up to the tree myself. As I study the trunk, looking around for every possible resource to use, a very clever sollution to this comes to my mind. Grinning, I stand behind the tree, and transform.

I feel my fur being locked away inside of me again, and it's a feeling of terrible sadness. My heart aches again, but I have to continue this challenge. I peep my head out from behind the tree, and rub my hands along the trunk. "No paws," I say simply, "So I can touch."

Not wanting anyone to see me, - well, the guys to see me, anyway - I climb around the back of the tree, then move to the designated branch so my body is hidden by leaves. I then shift back into my wolf form, which makes the branch rustle a bit. With a grin, I jump down.

I can tell I've done a good job when most of the members of the pack are looking at me with shock, and my mother is glowing with pride. I can't help but glow as well. Adonis is smiling at me sadly, but Desdemona is just glaring. "Don't hate me cuz you aint me, Desdemona." I say simply, taking my seat next to Adonis. Desdemona looks taken aback that I would say something like that towards her infront of the pack, but I don't care. As I look around at the rest of my pack members, they are rendered speechless as well.

My mother has flattened her ears. "Go take a walk, Olathe." She says, "Walk around the forest a bit. Come back when you calm down." I blink. I didn't think I said anything that bad, but following my mother's orders, I did as I was told like the good girl I have to be.

So that's how it is, I think, I stand alone.
